The Spinward Marches has been settled since the 400s and is still a frontier sector. High-tech worlds are scattered among empty, fallow worlds; there is potential for exploration, exploitation, and development for centuries to come.

The Spinward Marches sector is not only a frontier, it is a war-torn frontier. The Imperium expanded into unclaimed territory until it reached the Marches, but there it found other races already in place. Most of these races were inconsequential, but the Zhodani had an empire nearly as large and as powerful as the Imperium. They were a force to be reckoned with; they resisted the Imperial advance and this created an atmosphere of contention and conflict.
This sector has been known by different names to different groups over its existence including the following:

The Spinward edge of the Imperium is 130 parsecs from the Emperor's throne on Capital. Beyond that border lie many worlds; some are client-states of the Imperium, while others are independent non-aligned governments.

The relationship between the Zhodani Consulate and the Imperium has never been an easy one. The continuing mistrust between the two empires makes another war both possible and probable. The Zhodani have supported guerrilla insurgency on Efate; Zhodani military preparations have resulted in Imperial registered ships being fired upon, boarded or destroyed; and both sides have established trade restrictions on the other's commodities.

Astrography and travel in the Marches are dominated by the Spinward Main, a chain of 223 systems meandering through fifteen of the Marches' sixteen subsectors.
}}
+

 +
Each system on the Spinward Main is only jump-1 from its nearest neighbors, making interstellar travel along the Main accessible even to starships with the least expensive jump drives.
 +

 +
The following astrographic data regarding the sector has been determined:
 +
* It is an average density region.
 +
* The brightest star in the sector is the orange bright giant primary of the Hefry system.
 +
** Thirteen marginally less luminous red giant stars dot the sector, with six forming a distinct, easily recognized group in its rimward-trailing quadrant.
 +
* The sector is studded with small rift density regions.
 +

 +
Stellar Distribution
 +
A basic map showing the distribution and size of stars within the Spinward Marches, right:
 +
* The color corresponds to the visible color of the star, which links to its spectral classification.
 +
* The size as shown indicates both the physical size of the object and its relative brightness.
 +

 +
Note that the stars as depicted are representative. Any star, no matter what its size, is a mere speck within the hex it occupies.
 +
* Ordinary main sequence stars can barely be seen from even a hex away.
 +
* Huge, intensely luminous giant stars can be seen from across the sector and far beyond.
 +

 +
Rift Regions
 +
The Spinward Marches has multiple well defined rift regions and also contains a number of minor voids that are too small to qualify as a true rift. These various areas of lower stellar density serve to hamper travel and restrict commerce within its boundaries.
 +
* The Spinward Main and Jump-2 and Jump-3 corridors of stars, the arteries of interstellar trade connecting the various clusters, snake between their empty expanses.
 +

 +
Named rift regions include:
 +

 +
* Abyss Rift
 +
* Aramis Rift
 +
* Cronor Cleft
 +
* Sword Rifts
 +
** Gram Rift
 +
** Narsil Rift
 +
* Greater Collace Rift
 +
* Jewell Rift
 +
* Quare Void
 +
* Strouden Void

Nature of Rifts
 +
Locally at least, a rift is an astrographic concept based purely on Jump Drive performance.
 +

 +
Rift regions generally relate to regular commercial traffic and the way it travels between destinations. Merchant vessels with jump-4 drives or better are fairly rare because of the higher costs involved in operating the vessel and the lower revenue generated by the reduced cargo space due to the need for large fuel tanks. As a result, the vast majority of merchant vessels are capable of jump-3 or less.
 +
* Large areas that cannot be crossed by Jump-3-capable vessels are denoted as rifts.
 +
* The nature and borders of a rift may be determined by other criteria in different regions.
 +

 +
Many of the named rift regions within the Marches don't qualify as true rifts under the criteria imposed by the Scout Service. However, many have traditionally recognized boundaries and are important local astrographic features, and as such they are included. Different sources may provide alternative names, different boundaries, or completely ignore the presence of some rifts depicted on the chart.
 +

 +
In order to qualify as a rift, the region must have ten or more contiguous hexes. Many subsectors have minor void regions that are too small to qualify as a true rift, but are still significant enough to seriously hamper and channel interstellar travel.

Economic Astrography
 +
The following commercial and economic data regarding the sector is available:
 +

 +
Importance
 +
A chart is provided showing importance as green circles centered on a world, with larger circles indicating greater importance and overlapping circles giving an overview of a region's economic significance. While importance is largely a measure of raw economic power, other influencing factors include starport quality, political significance, a high planetary habitability rating, or even the local culture.
 +

 +
Importance also gives a good indication of the sphere of influence that individual worlds exert.
 +

 +
Imperial & Aslan Corporations
True development of the Spinward Marches began with the arrival of the Imperials in 60 when Mora was settled; Regina was settled in 75. Between 200 and 400, the major Imperial exploration and settlement of the Marches took place. By 500, there were Imperial explorations beyond the Marches and into Zhodani territory in the adjacent Foreven (Iakr) sector.

History & Background
+
* circa -300,000: the Ancients are active within the sector, most notably transplanting humans from Terra onto Darrian.
The Spinward Marches has been settled since the 400s and is still a frontier sector. High-tech worlds are scattered among empty, fallow worlds; there is potential for exploration, exploitation, and development for centuries to come.
+
* after -4045: a few Vilani dissidents fleeing the Ziru Sirka may have passed through the sector.
 +
* late -2400s: Terran explorers pass through the sector, heading generally to spinward and eventually founding settlements in the Theta Borealis region.
 +
* -1511: far-flung Terran traders contact the Daryens of Darrian. Over the next few centuries Daryen technology advances exponentially.
 +
* -1137: the Darrian Confederation is founded.
 +
* -924: the Maghiz – the primary star of the Darrian system destabilizes, transmitting a massive EM pulse that travels out from the star for parsecs and eventually destroys the highly advanced Daryen civilization.
 +
* -399: Gram and a number of other worlds in the Sword Worlds Subsector are settled by Terrans fleeing a civil war in the Old Earth Union, in the Solomani Rim. <br> They travel though Aslan Space to reach the Marches.

Spinward Marches style="width: 250px; height: 350px; border: solid 1px black; float: right; clear: left"

The Spinward Marches Sector is the Imperium's farthest frontier sector, containing 439 star systems divided along a coreward/rimward line by the Imperial border.

The Spinward edge of the Imperium is 130 parsecs from the Emperor's throne on Capital (Core 2118).

Physical Astrography[edit]

(Chart sourced from Traveller Map).
(Chart sourced from Traveller Map).

Astrography and travel in the Marches are dominated by the Spinward Main, a chain of 223 systems meandering through fifteen of the Marches' sixteen subsectors.

Each system on the Spinward Main is only jump-1 from its nearest neighbors, making interstellar travel along the Main accessible even to starships with the least expensive jump drives.

The following astrographic data regarding the sector has been determined:

  • It is an average density region.
  • The brightest star in the sector is the orange bright giant primary of the Hefry system.
    • Thirteen marginally less luminous red giant stars dot the sector, with six forming a distinct, easily recognized group in its rimward-trailing quadrant.
  • The sector is studded with small rift density regions.

Stellar Distribution[edit]

A basic map showing the distribution and size of stars within the Spinward Marches, right:

  • The color corresponds to the visible color of the star, which links to its spectral classification.
  • The size as shown indicates both the physical size of the object and its relative brightness.

Note that the stars as depicted are representative. Any star, no matter what its size, is a mere speck within the hex it occupies.

  • Ordinary main sequence stars can barely be seen from even a hex away.
  • Huge, intensely luminous giant stars can be seen from across the sector and far beyond.

Rift Regions[1][edit]

The Spinward Marches has multiple well defined rift regions and also contains a number of minor voids that are too small to qualify as a true rift. These various areas of lower stellar density serve to hamper travel and restrict commerce within its boundaries.

Named rift regions include:

Nature of Rifts[edit]

Locally at least, a rift is an astrographic concept based purely on Jump Drive performance.

  • Large areas that cannot be crossed by Jump-3-capable vessels are denoted as rifts.
  • The nature and borders of a rift may be determined by other criteria in different regions.

In order to qualify as a rift, the region must have ten or more contiguous hexes. Many subsectors have minor void regions that are too small to qualify as a true rift, but are still significant enough to seriously hamper and channel interstellar travel.

Economic Astrography[edit]

The following commercial and economic data regarding the sector is available:

Importance[edit]

A chart is provided showing importance as green circles centered on a world, with larger circles indicating greater importance and overlapping circles giving an overview of a region's economic significance. While importance is largely a measure of raw economic power, other influencing factors include starport quality, political significance, a high planetary habitability rating, or even the local culture.

Importance also gives a good indication of the sphere of influence that individual worlds exert.

Politics and Diplomacy : Historical[edit]

True development of the Spinward Marches began with the arrival of the Imperials in 60 when Mora (Spinward Marches 3124) was settled; Regina (Spinward Marches 1910) was settled in 75. Between 200 and 400, the major Imperial exploration and settlement of the Marches took place. By 500, there were Imperial explorations beyond the Marches and into Zhodani territory in the adjacent Foreven (Iakr) sector.
