Forine is a high-population, non-agricultural, industrial and icy world with a billion or more sophonts in population size.
- The surface of this world is ice-capped with nearly all of its water frozen.
- As an industrial world, this planet has well-developed manufacturing and processing industries. Manufactured goods are a major export item.
- It is unable to produce quality foodstuffs and must import them.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the District 268 Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector.
- Forine is a member of the Spinward Main.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Forine has a solitary primary star.
- It is a yellow main sequence.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x6 secondary rocky worlds.
- x1 planetoid belt.
The system includes Forine (the mainworld), a planetoid belt called the Dragan Belt, six small rocky vacuum worlds, and two planetoid clusters located at Forine's Trojan points.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Forine is a Small World between 4,000km and 5,600km in diameter. The world has low gravity between 0.24G and 0.34G. The horizon will appear about 3km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Forine has a pressure of less than 0.1 atmospheres which requires the use of a Vacc Suit. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
Forine is a small, bitterly cold (average surface temperature is -146°C) planet with a trace atmosphere and no native lifeforms of any kind.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Forine has 15-25% of its surface covered by ice, either in vast sheets or contained deep within craters or fractures on the surface. Wilderness refueling is possible. Water for the inhabitants can be got by mining and melting ice.
- The surface of the world is composed of a crust of ice many kilometers thick.
- Much of the surface is cratered and covered in thick layers of regolith and dust of meteoric origin, leaving only a part of the icy outer shell exposed.
- Below the outer icy shell there may be a world-ocean of liquid water.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
(Blank map, trace atmosphere world.)
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Some suspect that there was a population on this world by the 400's, who were belters from elsewhere in the Imperium.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Forine has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
Forine's starport would be a Class A if it wasn't too small for the traffic it has to handle. As it is, casual visiting ships cannot be sure of getting even elementary service in reasonable time, reducing its official class to D. This state of affairs has been chronic since 1104, when a construction workers' strike resulted in riots and extensive destruction of starport facilities. Every attempt to solve the conflict and remedy them since then has proved a temporary stopgap at best.
World Population (P)[edit]
Forine has a population of 6,000,000,000 sophonts (billions).
- High Population Worlds like this tend to have huge consumer markets.
Urbanization[edit]
The population of the Forine system totals 5.9 billion and is scattered across the entire system. 1.6 billion lives on and in orbit around Forine; another 3 billion inhabits the Dragan Belt. The rest are fairly evenly divided between the two trojan clusters.
The surface of the world is dotted with huge environmental domes that provide the one thing that's not available in the space habitats elsewhere in the system: space. The domes are so densely and so evenly distributed that the nightside viewed from space gives the illusion that the entire surface is covered by a single structure.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Forine possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land & Water: Grav belts and maturing gravcraft.
- Air: Greatly improved hybrid grav-aircraft.
- Space: Improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-1.
World Government (G)[edit]
Forine is governed by a Non-charismatic Dictatorship. This is a continuation of the charismatic dictatorship, where the original leadership has died or retired and been replaced by allies or protégés. The justifications for the original change in government remain as well as the assertion of rights to rule.
World Law (L)[edit]
Forine has a high law level with laws covering many areas of interactions of people, corporations, and the government. A few worlds with this law level may be Amber Zones. Any interaction with the judicial system requires an Advocate trained in the local legal system. Law enforcement is present almost everywhere, either as people or via technology. Legal proceedings can take weeks to months to resolve and involve a dozen or more people. All blade weapons and firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 2 (ordinary)
Forine is the primary producer of processed and refined metals and minerals for the subsector.
The world specializes in producing cheap electronic components for the lucrative export market. Yet, profits gained from interstellar trade is only a small slice of the planetary economy. The system-wide economy is in the hands of a small percentage of the population and most Forineans live in relative poverty. The discrepancy between the haves and the have-nots is exacerbated by the fact that the haves import large amounts of natural food, mostly from the Ag Worlds Combine. Natural food is in short supply and many Forineans subsist primarily on unappetizing artificial and reprocessed foods supplied free by the state. Rumors and jokes which suggest that the latter include foods made from processed sophont cadavers are vociferously denounced by Forinean officials and generally dismissed by serious offworld analysts.
World Economy[edit]
- Resources: C (very abundant)
- Labor: 8 (hundreds of millions)
- Infrastructure: C (very extensive)
- Efficiency: +2 (good)
World Culture[edit]
- Heterogenity: 9 (discordant)
- Acceptance: B (extremely friendly)
- Strangeness: 5 (distinct)
- Symbols: A (abstract)
