The Otarri of Faldor (Spinward Marches 1131) are a technologically primitive Minor Race with a humanoid appearance.

Physiology & Environment (Ecology)[edit]

Physically the Otarri are broadly humanoid in size and shape. They have two arms, two legs, a flexible tail, a barrel-shaped torso holding the internal organs, and a head mounting the primary sensory organs and containing the brain. Their hands are broadly equivalent to those of humans and they can use human-designed equipment with few problems. They utilize atmospheric oxygen in respiration, have a bony internal skeleton, and have internal fluids that are a parallel to human blood.

They are descended from primitive amphibians that inhabited tropical wetlands and require regular soaking in water to prevent their skin from drying out. The Otarri have a number of other features which mark them as water dwelling creatures, including webbed feet and hands and over-sized eyes with excellent dim light vision.

Diet & Trophics[edit]

Though considered omnivores and able to consume a wide variety of foodstuffs the Otarri are largely carnivorous, with a distinct preference for fish. There are documented cases of cannibalistic behaviour, though it is unclear whether this is a ritual practise. Humans and Otarri can generally consume the same food, though caution is advised.

Reproduction[edit]

Otarri are known to have two genders, female and male. Females are dominant, controlling society and acting as leaders, while males are far more numerous. Males tend to be physically smaller than females. The species are believed to be oviparous, laying clutches of eggs that are tended until they hatch. The exact details of the Otarri reproductive process or the way in which they age remains unclear.

Culture & Society (Ethnology)[edit]

The Otarri are considered a technologically primitive race, having reached only TL–0. Faldor is undergoing a gradual but massive climate shift, which has reduced the known numbers and range of the Otarri to a few thousand individuals living on the still fertile western shores of the Sea of Storms. There are almost certainly other uncontacted groups inhabiting the deep wildernesses of the world.

Social Organization[edit]

The Otarri are grouped into matriarchal tribes, each of which is overseen by a Queen. The current High Matriarch of the various scattered tribes is Queen Nabalus III, a powerful leader who has created a confederation through force of will, skilful diplomacy, and the occasional judicious use of force. The Otarri consider her to be the first ruler of the entire world and have raised monuments in her honor. Despite the High Matriarch's control, fighting between the tribes and even between factions within them is frequent as the Otarri hunting grounds shrink. Imperial xenobiologists estimate that the Otarri are rapidly becoming extinct, though no long term study of the race has been undertaken.

Urbanization[edit]

The Otarri create settlements consisting of enclosed wallows and pools constructed around a royal pond, with each enclosure linked to the others by a network of shallow canals. The greatest of these settlements is called Amballus and features swampland parks and gigantic, highly detailed sculptures constructed entirely from bone.

Linguistic Topography[edit]

The most commonly heard languages are:

  • Native Otarri languages.
    • Some Otarri speak Anglic, one of the principal languages of the Imperium.

Technology & Trade (Economy)[edit]

Otarri society functions at TL–0, though it is sophisticated and well organized. Contact has been made with interstellar merchants, but other than a few Otarri trading for baubles and trinkets little has come of it. The Otarri have little of value to trade and appear to be highly aggressive with most outsiders.
