System Data[edit]

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

Mainworld Data[edit]

The planet has a normal climate and a standard oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere.

It orbits within its star's habitable zone.

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Riverland is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Riverland has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. A Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear and will likely be easy for most sophonts to breathe.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Riverland has 55-65% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has significant large liquid bodies. Wilderness refueling is possible.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

So called for the extensive river network that weaves through the main continent, Riverland is an overpopulated world of bureaucrats who administer Zhodani interests in Jewell. Riverland also has a large number of re-education centers to service the needs of its people in this subsector. It was colonized in 347 when the Zhodani were establishing themselves in the Jewell subsector. [2]

Riverland is a Puzzle World and is designated as an Amber Zone. It presents particular risks and dangers due to the environment or native life forms, laws or customs, or other conditions that are not well understood.

  • Visitors are advised to act with caution.

The IISS has rated the world as an Amber Zone due to the presence of a Tavrchedl' training center.

Riverland gives its name to both the Riverland Cluster and the Riverland Wall, a set of defensive naval bases stretching from Farreach (Spinward Marches 1402) to Cipango (Spinward Marches 0705).

World Starport (St)[edit]

Riverland has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

  • A minority of popular Zhodani foodstuffs are not digestible by other Human races; eating them may result in food poisoning. Restaurants and food shops in regions frequented by non-Zhodani Humans, such as this world's startown, have menus or labels that mark which foods are appropriate for non-Zhodani.

World Population (P)[edit]

Riverland has a population of 20,000,000,000 sophonts (tens of billions).

Urbanization[edit]

Cities on Riverland include:

  • Kashev: The capital, a vast metropolis home to nearly 50 million people. The Riverland starport is situated on the western side near a thriving commercial district.
  • Undertown: To help ease the overcrowding in Kashev, this subterranean prole settlement was constructed.
  • Netzba: The largest underwater city and water processing plant on Riverland.

Linguistic Topography[edit]

The following languages are most commonly heard:

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Riverland possesses a Technology Level of TL–9.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics and satellite communication and data networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fusion power.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Ultra high-speed trains and early grav vehicles.
    • Water: High efficiency sailcraft, multihulled seacraft, improved artificial gills.
    • Air: Tiltrotorcraft, exotic VTOL's, PARWIG, and rocket-assisted suborbitals.
    • Space: SSTO spacecraft, early military spacecraft (System Craft), and interstellar STL starships
    • FTL: Prototype Jump Drive-1.

World Government (G)[edit]

Riverland is governed by an Impersonal Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government takes another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy dictates government policy and its execution. Government leadership is reduced to little more than figureheads and does not select the bureaucracy leadership or its members.

The Zhodani Consulate maintains itself through a variety of taxes on goods and services. Each council -- planetary or higher -- has the authority to levy a tax on gross income to support services like hospitals, emergency and transport services, or the Tavrchedl'.

World Law (L)[edit]

Riverland has a high law level with laws covering many areas of interactions of people, corporations, and the government. A few worlds with this law level may be Amber Zones. Any interaction with the judicial system requires an Advocate trained in the local legal system. Law enforcement is present almost everywhere, either as people or via technology. Legal proceedings can take weeks to months to resolve and involve a dozen or more people. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (outside private residences or visiting starships).

Three broad categories of crime are recognized by the Zhodani Consulate: inadvertent, incited, and insane. The concept of premeditated crime for personal gain fits under the insane heading.

  • Inadvertent crime is an unintentional violation or infraction of the law, resulting from inattention. For minor cases the usual punishment is a small fine.
  • Incited crime is an infraction of a law brought about by another, often resulting from an overreaction to inadvertent crime or misfortune. The solution is re-education.
  • Insane crime is a general heading for most major crimes against property or individuals.
