Dinom is a nonindustrial vacuum world, which warrants hazardous environment precautions.

  • Life in a vacuum requires great discipline. After all, it only takes one forgotten seal on a vacuum suit to spell death. Those who survive tend to be very methodically-minded and attentive to small detail.
  • As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • It is a member of the Third Imperium in the Lanth Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector in the Domain of Deneb.

System Data[edit]

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

  • The mainworld. It occupies a relatively stable orbital position trailing behind the gas giant.
  • x12 secondary rocky worlds, all former satellites of the system's gas giant.
    • They have eccentric, unstable orbits around the star and will likely eventually be ejected from the system.
  • x1 gas giant, a rogue world captured by the star multiple millennia ago and stripped of its moons.

Mainworld Data[edit]

Dinom was an outer moon of a gas giant world.

Gas Giant Moons 10f.jpg

Dinom is a small (4,800 kilometer diameter) vacuum world in a complex far orbit around the central star of the system. Dinom's star is a very large, very bright blue-white main sequence visible across the region, and would not normally have planets. Dinom itself is a semi-satellite – it was originally a moon of the system's gas giant, a rogue world itself captured by the star multiple millennia ago – and Dinom is now trapped in the trojan position of that gas giant, trailing behind the giant world as it orbits around the star.

  • The other former moons occupy unstable orbits starward of the gas giant.

Dinom's orbital period is 1,600 years, while its axis of rotation is perpendicular to the ecliptic. The normal orbit causes precession of the axis of rotation by 0.225° per year. In 1130 the axis of rotation points directly at the primary. When in this state, Dinom's atmosphere freezes on to the "Cold Face", and the "Bright Face" is an airless ball of rock. [2]

As the orbital precession continues, the "Cold Face" becomes gradually exposed, and the frozen atmosphere thaws and sublimates back out. By 1200, there is a trace atmosphere as the world enters its more normal daylight cycle mode. Around 1500, Dinom has a normal day/night cycle and a full atmosphere.

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Dinom is a Small World between 4,000km and 5,600km in diameter. The world has low gravity between 0.24G and 0.34G. The horizon will appear about 3km away.

  • Surface gravity is about 0.20 G.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Dinom has a pressure of less than 0.001 atmospheres which requires the use of a Vacc Suit. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Vacuum World 05.jpg

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Dinom has no free-standing water or ice on the surface. Wilderness refueling isn't possible on this world. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are classified Desert World or a Hell World depending on their atmosphere.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

Native Lifeforms[edit]

Nestled within the abysses (which fill with gas during the gentler periods of Dinom) are the spores of life for the world. In the long changes of temperature, the spores come out and flourish when the time is right. This life is primarily composed of autotrophic forms.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

Settlement of this world took place only 200 years ago, just as the world was settling into a Bright Face period. The cities were established in the predicted twilight zones to take advantage of the temperate climates.

World Starport (St)[edit]

Dinom has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Population (P)[edit]

Dinom has a population of 200,000 sophonts (hundreds of thousands).

  • This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.

Urbanization[edit]

Dinom's population of 230,000 is concentrated in three large cities (named Rhylan, Medianne, and Napan) which house ore-processing centers.

  • These cities, as well as outlying mining areas, are being connected by a global monorail net.

Linguistic Topography[edit]

The most commonly heard languages are:

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Dinom possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Government (G)[edit]

Dinom is governed by Self-Perpetuating Oligarchy. A single family or small group provides the leadership and important positions in the government. These positions are inherited by member of the group or their family members. The organization may be a monarchy, with titles passed to family members, or a plutocracy where inheritance of the family fortune includes government position. Alternatively, the organization may be a more typical government apparatus, only with positions of power inherited.

Each city is governed by a board of directors answering to the shareholder-owners (who number about 10 per city) of the ore-processing centers. Token representation for nonshareholders is also provided. The three cities send representatives to Rhylan for the World Board, which also has representation (about 10%) for the non-city dwellers. The Board is responsible for interstellar relations, system defense, industrial production, and Imperial contact.

World Law (L)[edit]

Dinom has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Personal concealable firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

Imperial Landed Nobility[edit]

Dinom, as a member world of the Third Imperium has a member of the Imperial Landed Nobility who acts as an Imperial representative to the world.

Sir Anthony Logan is the Imperial Noble overseeing the interests of the Imperium in the classic era.

Trade Data[edit]

  • Importance: -1 (unimportant)

World Economy[edit]

  • Resources: 8 (moderate)
  • Labor: 4 (tens of thousands)
  • Infrastructure: 3 (very limited)
  • Efficiency: -3 (poor)

World Culture[edit]

  • Heterogenity: 3 (monolithic)
  • Acceptance: 4 (extremely aloof)
  • Strangeness: 3 (somewhat typical)
  • Symbols: 8 (somewhat abstract)
