Joyeuse has an ideal environment for producing agricultural goods and a balanced population between 10 and 100 million. This world is designated an Amber Zone. Caution is advised since the world has an environment, laws, customs, life forms, or other conditions that are not well understood and might be a danger to a visitor. It is a member of Sword Worlds Confederation in the Sword Worlds Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector and in the Sword Worlds. This world supports a Sword Worlds Military Base and the system supports a Sword Worlds Naval Base.
- Joyeuse is a member of the Spinward Main.
- It is part of the Gram Arm.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Joyeuse is a binary star system.
- Both are red main sequence stars named Karl and Gallas respectively.
System Data[edit]
Thoslinn, the next planet out from Joyeuse, is the site for the largest and most heavily fortified military base and training facility in the Sword Worlds Confederation.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Joyeuse has a 3:2 resonance orbit with its close primary at a distance of 0.06 AU. Joyeuse's year is a scant 12 days long, which in combination with the planet's slow rotation means that it goes through a very hot "daysummer" of constant sun and a freezing "nightwinter" of constant darkness.
Mainworld Geography & Topography[edit]
Joyeuse features temperate plains and rolling hills. The lifestyle of the majority of the inhabitants has changed little for centuries. Dry conditions and the Broedsaed Mange (see below) make it very difficult for Joyeuse to grow enough food to support a larger population than its current 40,000,000.
The capital city of Virodby is located on the southern edge of the small continent of Arvildsvaten. Joyeuse's starport, Svelund, is located on an island northwest of Virodby.
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Joyeuse is plagued by a problem collectively known as Broedsaed Mange, a number of fungal infestations that attack almost all known flowering plants. This, along with the difficult climate, makes conventional food production very difficult. Outdoor agriculture relies mainly on fungal crops, with carefully controlled industrial greenhouses used to raise conventional foodstuffs.
The animals known as Attemunni ("Eightmouths") are the primary marine lifeforms. This order of animals corresponds to Terran whales, sharks and large fish, though a few types have adapted to the air. They are not palatable to Humans.
- An aerial creature, the svarning attemunni is a blood drinker by nature.
- Among the largest attemuni are the auma, or "sea serpents"; lengthy eel-like creatures.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
This "frontier world" is inhabited by hardy Sword Worlders struggling against the poor irrigation and fungal blights.
A civil war on Joyeuse started in 1098 and continued for a number of years. As with most conflict on the planet, water rights was a considerable contributing factor.
Joyeuse contributed a considerable fleet to the 5th Frontier War[2]. The Joyeuse Fleet pushed out of Joyeuse toward Vilis (Spinward Marches 1119), but was never able to make any progress against the Imperial 23rd Fleet. It was pushed back and reduced to holding the Sword Worlds border after 180-1109.[3]
World Starport (Sp)[edit]
Joyeuse has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
- The Starport is small but well-appointed, serving traffic passing along the Gram Arm. Relatively little commercial activity takes place here; most revenue comes from docking fees, maintenance and the sale of Joyeuse-made goods to passing vessels. Traffic is light compared to other ports of the Gram Arm.
World Population (P)[edit]
Joyeuse has a population of 40,000,000 sophonts (tens of millions).
World Languages[edit]
- Sagamaal: The common tongue of the Sword Worlds Confederation. Its name references the intent that it evoke the language of ancient sagas of northern Terra -- or at least an idealised understanding of those cultures.
Urbanization[edit]
The 40 million people are primarily distributed in small farming towns. The largest city houses 250,000 people; most are much smaller. The availability of water, along with shelter from the worst of the weather, dictates the location of most settlements.
World Government (G)[edit]
Joyeuse has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.
- The official overall leader is the Hertug, but his ability to project power or control areas away from the capital is extremely limited. Real power rests with the regional representatives of the Agricultural Board, an organisation set up long ago to oversee food production.
World Law[edit]
Each city and major region has a representative heading its own increasingly bureaucratic apparatus. Regulations are in place to limit the damage done by fungal outbreaks and get food to the right places. To these have been added a vast body of rules and procedures, making it difficult to coordinate any large-scale project without weeks of legal wrangling.
Trivia[edit]
Joyeuse was, in medieval legend, the sword wielded by Charlemagne as his personal weapon. The name means "joyous".
