Gram is an industrial world with a tainted atmosphere. The system has a population over one billion. This world is also the overall capital of an interstellar government with the extra trade and prestige associated with that role. It is a member of Sword Worlds Confederation in the Sword Worlds Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector and in the Sword Worlds. This world supports a Sword Worlds Military Base and the system supports a Sword Worlds Naval Base.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

Stellar Data[edit]

Gram is a binary star system.

  • The primary is a white main sequence named Sigurd.
  • The secondary is a red main sequence named Sigmund.
Gram has two stars in the star system.

Mainworld Topography and Geography[edit]

Gram has a normal climate with a dense oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere tainted by industrial pollution. The world is remarkable in that its surface is almost perfectly divided between land and water; there is one giant ocean, Vendshavet, and one supercontinent, Midgaard, though Gram also has a number of small inland seas here and there. The capital city of Gram is Ny Kalmar; a smaller city, Faellesborg, serves as capital for the Confederation.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Gram was the first of the Sword Worlds to be settled. The world was sufficiently habitable to allow the colonists to establish a home and then spread out to what became the other Sword Worlds as their numbers grew. For this reason the people of Gram have always considered themselves the original and best Sword Worlders, and of course the rightful leaders of the Confederation.

Gram has been at least the nominal capital of the Confederation since 852.

This is the homeworld of the Sword Worlders culture.

World Starport[edit]

Gram has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

Gram produces most of the warships used throughout the Confederation. Conditions in Gram's industrial cities are rather grim, with unrest common among the workers.

Gram has an orbital military base. The original was was badly battered in the last days of the Fifth Frontier War, and a new one was constructed following the war.

World Languages[edit]

  • Sagamaal: The common tongue of the Sword Worlds Confederation. Its name references the intent that it evoke the language of ancient sagas of northern Terra -- or at least an idealised understanding of those cultures.

World Government[edit]

Gram is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government takes another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy, and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. This ruling bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucractic apparatus or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence, like the military.

  • Gram retains a hereditary nobility, who are still politically influential.
  • As one of the 20 most powerful noble houses and the one with the grandest history, the Storhertug (as the monarch is known) is an extremely powerful player in Gram's politics.
  • Below the royal house are the hereditary nobles -- around 38 Jarlenir and 400 or so Grevenir. The Storhertug can promote a greve to jarl or elevate a non-noble to the office of greve, although this requires the consent of a majority among the existing nobility.
  • The hereditary positions of these nobles do not give them intrinsic power; it is their holdings that make them influential.

Economy[edit]

Historical Data[edit]

History-Milieu: New Era: Gram has been largely ambivalent towards the Regency. The world's lower classes had been miserable under Sword World rule, and trade with the Regency has brought them a measure of prosperity. Unlike most other violence stricken Sword Worlds, resistance to occupation has not come from the grassroots, as on Sacnoth, but from disaffected parts of the upper and middle classes, largely students and intellectuals. Gram's government is strongly divided between pro and anti-Regency factions, and intercommunal fighting has been a problem.

The Representative Authority is a Ruler, King Albrecht VII who (along with his Queen, Ingrid) represents the place and fills the executive and judicial roles. Several councils fulfill the role of the legislative arm.

The Royal Shipyards are the only place in the Sword Worlds which can construct jump drives. In addition to the normal defenses, the planet is defended by a number of TL–12 Meson gun planetary defense sites (obtained from Sacnoth). They are EM Masked, with nuclear dampers and meson screens. The cities of Gram are also protected by nuclear dampers and meson screens.

Trade Data[edit]

  • Importance: 5 (very important)

World Economy[edit]

  • Resources: E (extremely abundant)
  • Labor: 8 (hundreds of millions)
  • Infrastructure: G (very comprehensive)
  • Efficiency: +5 (very advanced)

World Culture[edit]

  • Heterogenity: 9 (discordant)
  • Acceptance: E (extremely xenophilic)
  • Strangeness: 5 (distinct)
  • Symbols: C (very abstract)

Despite the Sword Worlds Confederation being steadfastly opposed to the Third Imperium, the average citizen of Gram has more in common with Imperials living on a high-population world than with other Sword Worlders. While it was once possible for the people of Gram to live in small villages and engage in more conventional Sword Worlder culture, its cities have grown so large that this is only possible in the most rural locations.
