Smoug is a poor, preindustrial desert hellworld.

  • The inhabitants of this world struggle to survive in the life-threatening environment of a desert hellworld.
  • This world has no free-standing water.
  • The world is a preindustrial one, which cannot produce adequate materials to maintain a modern, star-faring society. These items must be imported at considerable cost.
  • This world has few prospects for significant economic development. The inhabitants of this world lead a bleak and constantly challenging existence.
  • It is a member of the Third Imperium in the Lunion Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector in the Domain of Deneb.
  • This is a hot world, with a climate of high temperatures.
  • Smoug is a member of the Spinward Main.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

System Data[edit]

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

Mainworld Data[edit]

Smoug orbits towards the inner edge of its star's habitable zone.

Chart Orbit HZ+ Region Detailed.png

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Smoug is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.

Smoug's high density is due to large iron deposits, and oxidized dust gives the world its reddish hue and makes the use of filter masks necessary. Most of the population employed in iron mining or support industries.[2]

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Smoug has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. While the thin atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Smoug has no free-standing water or ice on the surface. Wilderness refueling isn't possible on this world. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are classified Desert World or a Hell World depending on their atmosphere.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

Smoug, formerly known as Electrum, was once considered one of the Metal Worlds, but has not been considered part of that group for centuries.

The world produces a number of spices used as food flavorings, cultivated in hydroponic towers as is most locally grown food due to the arid and harsh environment. These include gedro petal, igzazi, and puante.[3]

World Starport (St)[edit]

Smoug has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Population (P)[edit]

Smoug has a population of 90,000,000 sophonts (tens of millions).

Linguistic Topography[edit]

The most commonly heard languages are:

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Smoug possesses a Technology Level of TL–9.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics and satellite communication and data networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fusion power.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Ultra high-speed trains and early grav vehicles.
    • Water: High efficiency sailcraft, multihulled seacraft, improved artificial gills.
    • Air: Tiltrotorcraft, exotic VTOL's, PARWIG, and rocket-assisted suborbitals.
    • Space: SSTO spacecraft, early military spacecraft (System Craft), and interstellar STL starships
    • FTL: Prototype Jump Drive-1.

World Government (G)[edit]

Smoug is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government takes another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy, and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. This ruling bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucractic apparatus or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence, like the military.

World Law (L)[edit]

Smoug has an extreme law level which covers every area of interaction. Laws are complex, detailed, and difficult to understand. Every interaction with the government requires an Advocate. Law enforcement is omnipresent and strict. Legal proceeding can take months to years to resolve and may involve dozens of people. A few worlds with this law level may be a Red Zone and others will be an Amber Zone. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (with no exception for private residences; visiting starships are only protected so long as they stay within designated starports and approach corridors).

Imperial Landed Nobility[edit]

Smoug, as a member world of the Third Imperium has a member of the Imperial Landed Nobility who acts as an Imperial representative to the world.

Trade Data[edit]

  • Importance: 0 (unimportant)

World Economy[edit]

  • Resources: B (abundant)
  • Labor: 6 (millions)
  • Infrastructure: 9 (extensive)
  • Efficiency: +2 (good)
