The core of the Cluster is a little more than two parsecs across and contains more than 70 stars, including a number of blue stellar giants. The tidal influence of the stars at its core can be measured around ten parsecs away from the core region. The extended halo of stars associated with the cluster (stars sharing very similar physical characteristics and motion) extends rimward deep into Canopus Sector, to spinward into the Ustral Quadrant and Dark Nebula sectors, coreward into Magyar Sector, and trailing into Aldebaran Sector and the Solomani Rim. Many of the stars within this region are in the process of escaping from the cluster.

Aldebaran Sector is a Solomani-dominated sector lying towards the rimward edge of Charted Space.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

(Chart sourced from Traveller Map).

Physcial Astrography[edit]

The following astrographic data regarding the sector has been determined:

  • It is a relatively low stellar density region.
  • The sector is studded with rift density regions.
  • The brightest star in the sector is Elnath, the blue giant primary of the Beta Tauri system.

Stellar Distribution[edit]

A basic map showing the distribution and size of stars within Aldebaran Sector, right:

  • The color corresponds to the visible color of the star, which links to its spectral classification.
  • The size as shown indicates both the physical size of the object and its relative brightness.

Note that the stars as depicted are representative. Any star, no matter what its size, is a mere speck within the hex it occupies.

  • Ordinary main sequence stars can barely be seen from even a hex away.
  • Huge, intensely luminous giant stars can be seen from across the sector and far beyond.

Rift Regions[edit]

Aldebaran Sector has multiple well defined rift regions and also contains a number of minor voids that are too small to qualify as a true rift. These various areas of lower stellar density serve to hamper travel and restrict commerce within its boundaries.

  • Jump-2 and Jump-3 corridors of stars, the arteries of interstellar trade connecting the various clusters, snake between their empty expanses.

Named rift regions include:

Nature of Rifts[edit]

Locally at least, a rift is an astrographic concept based purely on Jump Drive performance.

Rift regions generally relate to regular commercial traffic and the way it travels between destinations. Merchant vessels with jump-4 drives or better are fairly rare because of the higher costs involved in operating the vessel, the lower revenue generated by the reduced cargo space due to the need for large fuel tanks, and the relative paucity of technologically advanced maintenance facilities within the region. As a result, the vast majority of merchant vessels are capable of jump-3 or less.

  • Large areas that cannot be crossed by Jump-3-capable vessels are denoted as rifts.
  • The nature and borders of a rift may be determined by other criteria in different regions.

In order to qualify as a rift, the region must have ten or more contiguous hexes. Many areas have minor void regions that are too small to qualify as a true rift, but are still significant enough to seriously hamper and channel interstellar travel.

Military vessels and specialist ships such as couriers are often only marginally affected by the presence of smaller rifts. Larger rift regions have a greater significance, requiring lengthy detours or complex refueling operations or creating bottlenecks that even the longest range vessels are forced to travel through.

  • Large rifts within the region form a key part of Confederation defense strategies, serving to channel prospective attackers towards defensive "hardpoints".

Other Astrographic Features[edit]

Hyades Cluster[edit]

Hyades Cluster

The Hyades is the nearest open cluster to Terra, lying around 47 parsecs from Sol and approximately 27 parsecs from the border of Aldebaran Sector: it is located within the spinward-coreward quadrant of Canopus Sector, to spinward, close to the border with Magyar Sector. It consists of a roughly spherical group of hundreds of stars sharing the same age, place of origin, chemical characteristics, and motion through space. When viewed from the surface of Terra, the Hyades form part of the head of the constellation Taurus, the Bull.

  • The Cluster is visible to the naked eye on worlds across the region.

Hyades Cluster Core.jpg Taurus Constellation Terra.png

Mains Clusters & Traces[edit]

Aldebaran Sector Importance
Aldebaran Sector Clusters

High cargo capacity, low jump rating vessels move along the clusters and traces of the sector, carrying vast amounts of goods and commodities between their member worlds. Jump-2 and Jump-3 feeder routes work their ways around the rifts and voids that dot the region, linking the various clusters and traces.

Importance[edit]

A chart is provided showing importance as green circles centered on a world, with larger circles indicating greater importance and overlapping circles giving an overview of a region's economic significance. While importance is largely a measure of raw economic power, other influencing factors include starport quality, political significance, a high planetary habitability rating, or even the local culture.

Importance also gives a good indication of the sphere of influence that individual worlds exert.

Mains[edit]

Main is an astrographic term for groups of 50 or more systems that are accessible by jump-1-capable starships.

Mains are highlighted in green: no mains lie within the sector.

Clusters[edit]

Cluster is a broad astrographic term for groups of between 10 and 50 systems that are accessible by jump-1-capable starships.

Clusters are highlighted in tan: five clusters lie wholly or partially within the sector.

Traces[edit]

Trace is an astrographic term for groups of between 5 and 10 systems that are accessible by jump-1-capable starships.

Traces are highlighted in brown: 21 trace-sized clusters of worlds lie wholly or partially within the sector.

Jump Bridges[edit]

Jump Bridges are locations within empty hexes that contain caches of fuel and supplies. They allow lower jump rating vessels to bridge gaps between distant worlds by providing a halfway point. The hexes these caches lie within are truly vast, and without exact coordinates to jump to within it a vessel could end up with empty tanks in empty wilderness, perhaps as much as a light-year away from any hope of rescue. Where they do exist, Jump Bridges are heavily guarded and access is not generally granted to those without the correct credentials.

  • No commercial jump bridges currently exist within the sector.
  • It has long been rumored that the Confederation maintains covert jump bridge facilities, but no reliable proof of this has ever been provided.
SolSec discourages talk of such things.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Solomani Security keeps a close eye on activities and events across the sector to ensure the security of the Confederation and the well-being of its loyal citizens. Aslan, other sophonts, and humans from neutral worlds are uniformly less likely to be cooperative with Solomani interests than Confederation citizens, but almost anyone could be a SolSec informant, passing on all sorts of useful information.

Aldebaran has a significant population of indigenous sophonts, though not all of these have successfully assimilated into Confederation society.

General Historical Overview[edit]

Terran Confederation circa -2204

At least four Terran settlements were established in Aldebaran by -2204, all far outside the borders of the Terran Confederation. Two were located in subsector J, while the other two were located in subsector K. Despite these early colonies, only the Coreward subsectors of Aldebaran were heavily populated prior to the Rim War.

Following the fall of Terra (Solomani Rim 1827), the capital of the entire Confederation was relocated to Home (Aldebaran 1009). And once Home became the capital, development of the entire sector became a prime engine of new economic growth. The worlds around Home benefit from their proximity to the Confederation’s new center of power, while settlement of the undeveloped rimward subsectors has accelerated.

Confederation policies encourage rimward settlement through liberal grants of territory on unsettled worlds, creating a wide-open colonial frontier. Rival Solomani Party factions, corporations, and planetary coalitions are competing in a ‘land rush’ to claim, colonize, and tame new worlds.

Aldebaran is not adjacent to any hostile powers, freeing the sector of the military border conflicts that have troubled other areas. As the leadership of the Confederation Navy are reluctant to commit main fleet assets to police a region that is not threatened by external enemies, the rimward area remains a wild frontier.
