Ilya is a poor, nonindustrial world.

  • As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • This world has few prospects for economic development.
  • It is a member of the Solomani Confederation in the Theta Aurigae Subsector of Aldebaran Sector.
  • This world is a "Twilight Zone World", a planet that is tidally-locked to its star. It has a hot side that permanently faces the star, a cold side that permanently faces away, and a narrow twilight zone in-between.
  • A Prison World, exile camp, or prison camp for criminals or other exiles is located upon this world in addition to other points of interest.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

Stellar Data[edit]

Ilya is a binary star system.

  • Both are red main sequence stars.
Ilya has two stars in the star system.

System Data[edit]

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

Mainworld Data[edit]

Ilya is tidally locked to its primary star.

  • The star is always high in the sky on the bright face, it hangs on horizon in the twilight zone, while the cold dark face is in permanent darkness.
  • The world experiences libration - a regular wobble - as it orbits, causing the star to move in the sky.

Twilight Zone World Horizon Arid 10.jpg

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Ilya is a Meso World between 10,400km and 12,000km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.7G and 0.9G. The horizon will appear about 4.7km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Ilya has a pressure of 0.10 to 0.42 atmospheres. The very thin pressures require a respirator or Oxygen Mask. This atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds, which requires the use of a Filter Respirator Combination Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–5 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Ilya has 25-35% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has a few small seas. Wilderness refueling is possible. Water for the inhabitants will be recycled.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.

The planet is very geologically active with many currently active volcanoes and super-volcanoes. This status may be the result of its apparent rapid de-spin into a tidally locked configuration. There are small remnant icepacks at the former rotational poles, and a larger polar cap growing at the new cold-pole. There is a small sea on the twilight zone, near the trailing point.

Native Lifeforms[edit]

Abundant native life, occupying every available ecological niche along the twilight zone and into the bright and dark faces. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

Ilya is an exile camp housing religious refugees from Hamral and Refuge.

Initial settlement occurred in 1102, with the construction of the downport.

Solomani Security keeps a close eye on things to ensure the security of the Confederation and the well-being of its loyal citizens. Almost anyone could be a SolSec informant, passing on all sorts of useful information: some gain a reward or benefit for their actions, others are coerced, but many see it as an act of duty to help protect the Solomani state and its interests.

World Starport (St)[edit]

Ilya has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Population (P)[edit]

Ilya has a population of 70,000 sophonts (tens of thousands).

  • This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
  • The population almost entirely consists of Solomani-descended humans in exile from Hamral and Refuge.

Urbanization[edit]

Three urbanized areas exist within the twilight zone near the planetary sea, within 20 km of the downport.

  • Hellitus – the world's original settlement.
  • Somgaras – the original Hamral settlement.
  • Zanthen – a relatively new town, still under construction.

The construction style is concrete brutalist. A double-reactor fission station is located equidistantly to these 3 towns as a primary power source. There appear to be several attempts at forestation of the park areas using plant-life brought from Refuge.

Linguistic Topography[edit]

The most commonly heard languages are:

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Ilya possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
    • Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
    • Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
    • Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World Government (G)[edit]

Ilya is governed by a Feudal Technocracy. Society divides itself based on the technical requirements of the society. Each of these functions are granted as a fief to an individual or group. Leadership of these fiefs determines the head of the government.

World Law (L)[edit]

Ilya has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. All firearms except shotguns, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

Later Historical Eras[edit]

Rebellion and Collapse[edit]

The initial settlement, in 1102, a little way from the downport, consisted of perhaps 1000 Church militants. They managed to complete construction of the main power plants within 20 years of the initial settlement, as well as the town of Godslove.

Large numbers of refugees from Hamral arrived 10 years after that, and constructed similar town of 2000 about 20 km away, on the other side of the downport. Their families and friends began to trickle then pour in over the next 10 years, swelling the town's numbers to 20,000 and more. In the meantime, the Church sent more of the faithful and dedicated clergy and monastic soldiers.

Good fences may make good neighbors, and for a time, the distance between the towns served that purpose well. Then, the Bischof Clarence, having studied the Hamral folk for some years, decided to confront Folkslader Gerald at the entrance to the downport on the construction of a Church within his town. The eloquent profanity-laced diatribe unleashed upon the Bischof was recorded and is considered a colony historical treasure. Suffice to say, the answer was essentially "No, and how dare you".

Eventually, the Bischof received Church monastic reinforcements to the point where he believed that God would bless the consecration of the new Church as a bastion of faith, and that the armed Church-folk would be able to hold the Church by using only threat of force. The march to the far town was met with angry armed militia, who offered a single chance for the Church-folk to drop their weapons and leave. The Bischof took the opportunity to speak on the merits of the faith, and was promptly shot. The pitched battle was far bloodier than either side had considered possible with no quarter asked or given. Perhaps 30% of the Church forces were able to withdraw in disorder; fully half of the Hamral forces lay dead on the field and surrounds with considerable wounded. Any wounded Church forces were "settled" during the after-battle clean up.

The Hamral townfolk remained enraged, and after returning to heal their wounds, they began planning a final mission to remove the militant theurgy. The assault came 4 weeks later in the form of the able-bodied from the original force bolstered by more than their number in female warrior militia. The force surrounded the church building and offered terms: leave the planet, give up your faith, or die.

Praister Johann, newly raised leader of the planetary Church, asked that the townsfolk be allowed to leave peacefully. Surprisingly most did, though some 300 or more lead by disguised clergy instead went to a secluded seashore convent area previously used only by the Bischof to maintain a secret Church presence. Negotiations for the Church went on for days, but eventually the Praister was convinced to take his books and depart via the downport. The Church has not seen fit to sent more people since then.

The seashore community remains quiet, and interacts surreptitiously with the 3 towns. There are, of course, suspicions, but many choose to ignore them.

Trade Data[edit]

World Economy[edit]

World Culture[edit]

The world's population are political dissidents and economic refugees from Hamral. They largely continue the cultural norms of their homeworld, focusing on self-sufficiency and loyalty to their group or nation. While militantly atheistic, the Ilyans teach a system of ethics and morality with a similar level of conviction; theistic worship is banned outright.
