Vignemale is a high-population, industrial world with a billion or more sophonts in population size.
- As an industrial world, this planet has well-developed manufacturing and processing industries. Manufactured goods are a major export item.
- Its economy is rapidly growing and living conditions are expected to rapidly improve barring outside forces.
- It is a part of the Third Reformed French Confederate Republic, a member state of the Solomani Confederation, located in the Euxene Subsector of Aldebaran Sector.
- It is a mainworld which is a satellite of either a gas giant or another world.
- It is a chilly tundra world, with a climate of low temperatures.
- This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or above the standard for Charted Space.
- It is a member of the Carthame Cluster.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Vignemale has a solitary primary star.
- It is a yellow main sequence.

System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld. It is a major moon of the system's gas giant.
- x8 secondary rocky worlds.
- Named worlds include Pyrenees, orbiting in the inner system, and Russell and Lister, both orbiting within the outer system.
- x1 gas giant, named Grossmal, orbiting towards the outer edge of the habitable zone.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Vignemale is the largest moon of a small gas giant named Grossmal.
The mainworld and its giant primary world orbit towards the outer edge of the star's habitable zone.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Vignemale is a Meso World between 8,800km and 10,400km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.6G and 0.8G. The horizon will appear about 4.4km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Vignemale has a pressure of 1.50 to 2.49 atmospheres. While a Dense Atmosphere requires no survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
- It experiences relatively low temperatures.
The dense atmosphere is a nitrogen-oxygen mix tainted by high levels of carbon dioxide.
- It is likely that without the presence of this greenhouse gas surface temperatures would have dropped further, resulting in an ice world.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Vignemale has 85-95% of its surface covered by liquid water with a few small continents, and a number of islands and archipelagos. Dry land is limited. Wilderness refueling is possible.
- The world's oceans are littered with icebergs and pack ice.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
A basic map of Vignemale, the mainworld of the system, showing oceans, major landmasses, island archipelagos, and the large polar icecaps.
As a relatively young world, it is active geologically active, with rugged highlands and jagged mountain ranges. The levels of volcanism are high, driven by the tidal flexing caused by the gas giant. The crust has very few exposed mineral veins: orbital scans indicate very low levels of exploitable deposits.
The oceans are deep, averaging 6 km in depth, though there is considerable variation. They contain the expected levels of dissolved metals and minerals and are slightly acidic due to dissolved carbon dioxide. The world is currently in a ice age, with the polar caps and glaciers extending to its 45th parallels. This ice mass has significantly lowered sea levels to the point that some previously submerged landmasses are exposed.
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Primitive but abundant native life principally occupying marine ecological niches. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
Various types of flora have begun to colonize the land. Mostly these are photosynthetic slimes and dense mosses, but among them are massive "trees" that grow wherever they can find purchase.
- The largest of these can reach up to 350 m in height and have a bole over 50 m in width; strong storms seem to prevent taller trees.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Solomani Security keeps a close eye on things to ensure the security of the Solomani State and the well-being of its loyal citizens. Almost anyone could be a SolSec informant, passing on all sorts of useful information: some gain a reward or benefit for their actions, others are coerced, while many see it as an act of duty to help protect the the State and its interests.
World Starport[edit]
Vignemale has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
Vignemale Highport is a Class B highport is based originally on a Solomani standard design. The operating philosophy is provide seamless and efficient service to all visitors and make them feel comfortable and appreciated. As a result, art provided from surface artists is continually being provide and displayed physically within the highport, even as part of standard lodging. High-class visitors and ship captains are occasionally presented with a piece of Vignemalean art as a gift. The food is considerably better than a standard Class B port by design. Variable pressure living quarters are standard, to allow both staff and visitors to smoothly transition between standard atmosphere and the surface pressure. A stay of 3 days at dense pressure is recommended before descent to the Downport.
The Vignemale Downport is located at a relatively rare flattened area of the 2nd largest continuous landmass, Impetus, which is a meteor impact crater. The majority of the startown is located beyond the rim of the original crater as a natural safety barrier. As above, so below; the Impetus Startown provides for high speed public transport, spacious business spaces, and aesthetically pleasing living spaces. There is access to the primary landmass, Everest, via grav shuttles and watercraft. Highbandwidth industrial transport for goods is available at a reasonable cost per metric ton.
Everest City contains the highest technological standards on the planet, and is designed for continuous aesthetic adaptation.
World Technology Level[edit]
Vignemale possesses a Technology Level of TL–12 or TL-C in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land, Water & Air: Personal G-Tubes and advanced gravcraft.
- Space: Advanced interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-3.
World Government[edit]
Vignemale is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is by representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referenda, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.
World Law Level[edit]
Vignemale is an open society on a weirdly epic scale. The Scout Service designates the overall planetary law level as zero.
Weapons and armor are not allowed to be imported; however, one can construct whatever one wants locally with their own hands and equipment. Generally, as long as you hurt no one, it is allowed to own and operate this equipment for personal reasons. Sub-societial guidelines will generally limit practical implementations. Local weapons and armors are available for sale at the Downport only.
Standard laws for the governing of a civilized society are in place. Murder, theft, fraud, etc are forbidden and those laws are enforced at multiple legal levels. The judicial system is designed to be straightforward and swift in implementation, with an emphasis on restitution and (then) isolation. Violent miscreants are often "transported" to another system and then banned from the Highport. Murderous miscreants judged too violent or sociopathic for incarceration are humanely executed, with a 2-week minimum period for appeal and final arrangements; this period rarely extends past 4 weeks even when vigorously contested. Methods vary by jurisdiction; a local phrase sums it up as roughly: experiment and find out.
World Military[edit]
Ground forces are made of heavily-armed defense-enthusiast Societies, typically with advanced bespoke equipment.
A wet navy is effected by a loosely associated set of Seaworthy Societies. These Societies are present on the surface, submerged, and deep sea regions. Like all Societies, they both compete and cooperate as they deem appropriate.
The planetary starforces are directed directly by the elected Junta Centrale and its Executif. By law, they may not engage in any surface action, but instead have total responsibility for the System defense and resource extraction as a whole. The star forces each have their own command and mission, and are considered professional employees of Vignemale. The planet and moon are protected by a small fleet of 10 SDBs. The starforces have been recently bolstered by the arrival of warships from the 3rd French for "extended shore leave". This older fleet consists of 3 Normandy class heavy cruisers, a De Gaulle class pocket carrier, and the 3 Striker class destroyers. Rumours exist that Vignemale is aggressively helping refit the fleet with innovative options given recent political developments.
World Economy[edit]
Vignemale as a world is somewhat lacking in metals and arable land, and thus it is considered non-industrial.
This world does provide for a thriving tourist industry, with many natural and almost natural beaches, mountain retreats, and arguably some of the best Terran skiing and cold-weather sports within the sector. A ex-patriot ice sculptor from the Spinward Marches has inspired an entire new industry of ice art in the Northern Icepack society.
In addition, local artisans bound together as sub-societies work to provide specialty bespoke products of almost any type...no questions asked. These myriad micro-industries provide for considerable, if untracked, income for the planet as well as local demand for the unusual raw materials. Thus, starships of all sizes will find a market for goods transport.
Some notable sub-industries revolve around advanced cybernetics and personal enhancement. It is recommended that interested travellers acquire a local guide from the appropriate sub-society, as these industrial zones are typically more accepting of casual violence.
Trade Data[edit]
Various manufactured goods.
World Demographics[edit]
No information yet available.
World Culture[edit]
Vignemale culture is extremely varied and granular. The overall culture is basically that an individual should be able to pursue their own desire and dreams unless it negatively impacts another. Beyond that, cultural technologies have evolved to allow individuals to find and work with those other individuals who share their bent. Societal memberships are fluid and generally accepting of new members, and each has their own bylaws. Not abiding by bylaws results in public ostracization with the reasons being given in detail; naturally, there are societies for those not accepted into other societies. There are also sub-sub-societies of just a single member. Some sophontologists consider this a form of balkanization, but the government structure is coherent across the population.
World Language/s[edit]
Anglic and an Euxene French dialect called Coreuxenic are the primary world languages. Other languages are used on a societal or sub-societal basis.
Urbanization[edit]
Urban living space is generally subterranean, leaving as much rare flat land available as parks as possible. Entire mountains have been escavated and reinforced as cities. The engineering society realm of Firebirg is notable in that the active core magma tube has been kept in place with advanced reinforcements.
Also, there are at least 2 major undersea mountains that have been urbanized. No sea bottom arcologies exist at this time, due to lack of interest; that said, that could change with the discovery of an accessible mining location. Such are the public hopes of the Robotic Survey Society, in any case.
