Merrick's Sorrow is a poor, low-population hellworld with a population less than 10,000 sophonts struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.

  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often develop intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Narmada Subsector of Aldebaran Sector.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

Stellar Data[edit]

Merrick's Sorrow is a binary star system.

  • The primary is a yellow main sequence.
  • The secondary is a red main sequence.
Merrick's Sorrow has two stars in the star system.

System Data[edit]

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

Mainworld Data[edit]

Merrick's Sorrow orbits towards the outer edge of the primary star's habitable zone.

Chart Orbit HZ- Region Detailed.png

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Merrick's Sorrow is a Meso World between 12,000km and 13,500km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.8G and 1.1G. The horizon will appear about 5.1km away. Vessels with 1G of thrust should check with local starport authorities before attempting to land using emergency power.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Merrick's Sorrow has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. While the thin atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Merrick's Sorrow has 15-25% of its surface covered by liquid water or ice. There may be a few small seas. Wilderness refueling is possible. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are Hell Worlds or Poor Worlds depending on their atmosphere.

  • The world's small seas are crusted with pack ice.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

Merrick's Sorrow is a member of the Forlorn Trace, a small cluster and minor trade route lying close to the rimward border of Aldebaran Sector.

World Starport (St)[edit]

Merrick's Sorrow has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Population (P)[edit]

Merrick's Sorrow has a population of 100 sophonts (hundreds).

  • This is a Low Population World and the population would be too low to sustain itself without moderate outside assistance. This may represent a large transient population such as the crew of a fleet of starships, the dwindling remnants of a dying colony, a construction team building a new colony, or an outpost that could evolve into a colony.
  • The population almost entirely consists of Solomani humans.

Linguistic Topography[edit]

The most commonly heard languages are:

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Merrick's Sorrow possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
    • Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
    • Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
    • Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World Government (G)[edit]

Merrick's Sorrow is governed by a Feudal Technocracy. Society divides itself based on the technical requirements of the society. Each of these functions are granted as a fief to an individual or group. Leadership of these fiefs determines the head of the government.

World Law (L)[edit]

Merrick's Sorrow has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. All firearms except shotguns, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

Later Historical Eras[edit]

Rebellion Era[edit]

Merrick's Sorrow was once a thriving mining world with, at its peak, 127 mines spread across the surface surrounding the Class C port. The world has gradually depopulated since the beginning of the current war with the Imperium.

Negotiations have slumped and trade has moved to new areas, and the focus of the Solomani Confederation has changed. Expansion to new worlds to rimward all but ceased, with every effort focused on regaining the worlds taken by the Empire long ago, during the Solomani Rim War. Merrick's Sorrow does not lie close to any major trade routes, isolating it from the core of the Solomani Confederation. Most of the mines have been abandoned, with only a few remaining operational in an attempt to keep the port open.
