New Utah is a high-population, pre-rich world with a billion or more sophonts in population size.
- It lacks adequate resources to expand its economy to a rich status.
- Its economy and population are rapidly growing and living conditions are expected to quickly rise barring outside forces.
- It is a member of the Solomani Confederation in the Sephi Hydra Subsector of Aldebaran Sector.
- This is a temperate world, with a climate of pleasant, average temperatures, considered to be an ideal or near-ideal environment by many different sophont species.
- This is a "Puzzle" world designated as an Amber Zone. Caution is advised since the world has an environment, laws, customs, life forms, or other conditions that are not well understood and might be a danger to a visitor.
- It is a member of the Simonides Run.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
New Utah is a binary star system.
- The primary is a white main sequence.
- The secondary is a red main sequence.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x9 secondary rocky worlds.
- x1 planetoid belt.
- x2 gas giants.
Mainworld Data[edit]
New Utah orbits within the prime region of the primary star's habitable zone.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
New Utah is a Meso World between 10,400km and 12,000km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.7G and 0.9G. The horizon will appear about 4.7km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
New Utah has a pressure of 1.50 to 2.49 atmospheres. A Dense Atmosphere requires no survival gear although it may be hard on sophonts not accustomed to it.
- It experiences generally moderate temperatures.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
New Utah has 25-35% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has a few small seas. Wilderness refueling is possible. Water for the inhabitants will be recycled.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
It has a large southern polar ocean but much of the world as a generally dry climate. It is noted for its varied terrain and picturesque deserts.
(Blank map, predominantly dry world.)
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Abundant native life occupying every available ecological niche. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
- Indigenous reptillianoid and arachnidoid analogs exist. Most indigenous lifeforms are brilliantly colored.
- Native lifeforms thrive in arid conditions.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
New Utah is a Puzzle World and is designated as an Amber Zone. It presents particular risks and dangers due to the environment or native life forms, laws or customs, or other conditions that are not well understood.
- Visitors are advised to act with caution.
It is a member of the Simonides Run, a cluster and locally important trade route.
New Utah was originally settled by two major waves of colonists. The first were ardent, fundamentalist followers of a Terran Christian faith called "The Church of Latter-Day Saints", sometimes referred to as Mormons. Upon setting foot planetside, there was already an agreed-upon constitution based upon the original beliefs and practices of their faith, which was quite detailed yet based upon documents and common-knowledge held only by this group of settlers. This combination means that many of the laws and legally-required customs are opaque to outsiders. On a positive note, if caught offending anyone or breaking their laws, the people of New Utah are very nice folks.
- Mormon missionaries try to convert anyone who will listen.
The second wave came from the Quesadan worlds to trailing, and consisted of individuals fleeing the Quesadan Inquisition. Around a third of the population (about 2.4 billion individuals) are nominal followers of the Church of Quesada: the Inquisition has no authority on the world.
- Relations between the Mormon majority and the Quesadans are for the most part simply a case of ignoring one another.
- The exuberant Quesadan culture, filled with food and drink and music and dance, does not sit easily with many Mormons.
Solomani Security keeps a close eye on things to ensure the security of the Confederation and the well-being of its loyal citizens. Almost anyone could be a SolSec informant, passing on all sorts of useful information: some gain a reward or benefit for their actions, others are coerced, but many see it as an act of duty to help protect the Solomani state and its interests.
World Starport (St)[edit]
New Utah has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
World Population (P)[edit]
New Utah has a population of 7,000,000,000 sophonts (billions).
- High Population Worlds like this tend to have huge consumer markets.
- The population almost entirely consists of Solomani humans.
Urbanization[edit]
The climate of New Utah tends to be very dry, with most urban centers located on the shores of lakes and waterways. Most cities are well-kept and clean, with abundant parks and public spaces and a discreetly maintained cemetery. The capitol is Smithstone, lying on the shores of the Holy Sea, the largest body of water on the planet, is a showcase for TL–10 architectural and construction techniques. The religious center, the Tabernacle, is particularly impressive.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The most commonly heard languages are:
- Latin, an ancient Terran language used by the Church of Quesada.
- Quesadan Spanish, an Iberian Dialect of the Spanish subfamily of languages of Terran origin spoken principally in the Grand United States of Quesada.
- Rim Anglic, a dialect of Anglic and the principal language of the Confederation.
- It is a second language within the Grand United States.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
New Utah possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land & Water: Grav belts and maturing gravcraft.
- Air: Greatly improved hybrid grav-aircraft.
- Space: Improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-1.
World Government (G)[edit]
New Utah is governed by an Impersonal Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government takes another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy dictates government policy and its execution. Government leadership is reduced to little more than figureheads and does not select the bureaucracy leadership or its members.
There is pattern of gerontocracy in this government structure.
- Legislature: Assembly of Elders
- Executive Council: Elder High Council
- Judiciary: Supreme Court of Elders
World Military[edit]
All male citizens are required to serve 3 years in the planetary armed forces.
World Law (L)[edit]
New Utah has an extreme law level which covers every area of interaction. Laws are complex, detailed, and difficult to understand. Every interaction with the government requires an Advocate. Law enforcement is omnipresent and strict. Legal proceeding can take months to years to resolve and may involve dozens of people. A few worlds with this law level may be a Red Zone and others will be an Amber Zone. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (with no exception for private residences; visiting starships are only protected so long as they stay within designated starports and approach corridors). Civilian movement is rigidly controlled. Travel documents are frequently checked, and destinations must often be declared when traveling substantial distances across the world.
World Economy[edit]
New Utah is a full-fledged global economy, with a full set of developed industries.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 3 (ordinary)
