Hyperborea is a nonindustrial fluid world.
- A fluid world has an oceanic geography consisting of heavily contaminated water or a substance such as ammonia, methane, hydrocarbons, or other exotic liquid.
- It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
- It is a member of the Solomani Confederation in the Euxene Subsector of Aldebaran Sector.
- It is a mainworld which is a satellite of either a gas giant or another world.
- This is a tidally-locked world with one side permanently locked to a gravity source and the other permanently facing away. Most commonly locked worlds are natural satellites of a larger planet or gas giant.
- This is a frozen world, with a climate of extremely low temperatures.
- This is a "forbidden" world designated as a Red Zone with an environment, laws, customs, life forms, or other conditions that make it extremely dangerous to visitors. Everyone is forbidden to travel here.

System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld. It is a major moon of the system's solitary gas giant.
- x8 secondary rocky worlds.
- x4 orbit the yellow primary star.
- x4 orbit the red secondary star.
- x1 gas giant, named Tritia. It orbits the yellow primary star in its outer system.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Hyperborea is a major moon of the large gas giant Tritia, orbiting the yellow primary star at approximately 12 AU.
- It is tidally locked to the giant planet, with one face permanently facing the huge world and one world permanently facing away.
The mainworld and its gas giant primary world orbit within the outer system.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Hyperborea is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Hyperborea has an Exotic Atmosphere and possesses an unusual gas mix which requires the use of oxygen tanks. Additionally, protective suits, while not necessary, are recommended. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
- The atmosphere almost entirely consists of nitrogen, with a small but significant percentage of methane and trace amounts of other gases.
- The surface atmospheric pressure is about 1.3 atm.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Hyperborea has 65-75% of its surface covered by liquid water or ice heavily tainted with other substances, which makes it dangerous, corrosive, or toxic. Wilderness refueling will be difficult. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds may be Hell Worlds.
- The water on the surface may be unsuitable for use or consumption without extensive filtering and purification.
- Refining for fuel may cause issues with shipboard purification plants.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
Hyperborea is a large moon, with some gravitationally-induced tectonic activity. A single contiguous methane-ethane world-ocean encircles the equator and the mid-latitudes, with landmasses occupying the northern and southern polar regions: the seas are extremely shallow, rarely exceeding 100 meters in depth and often no more than a few meters deep. Most surface features are from large, old asteroid impacts; smaller craters have been largely worn away by wind and the chemical rain. There are large areas covered in water-ice or exposed bedrock that are suitable for landing.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Hyperborea is a Forbidden World and is designated as a Red Zone. It presents serious risks and dangers due to the environment or native life forms, laws or customs, or other conditions that make it extremely dangerous to visitors.
- Travel to this world is prohibited.
Hyperborean culture is the product of an insular group desiring a world of their own, where they could exclude "undesirables". It appears that this term has evolved over time to include almost any outsider, though the world's inhabitants reserve a particular dislike for non-human sophonts and humans from certain systems. This prevailing attitude represents a danger to planetary visitors.
Early colonists endured considerable hardships due to the environment and the paucity of supplies. Survival became the overriding imperative, and strong decisive leadership has always been popular, with most planetary governments taking the form of a centralized dictatorship. The current Governor is Beatrice Blanca, who came to power recently in a successful coup d'état, after gaining the support of most of the world's paramilitary security forces.
The atmosphere is very cold but is at 1.3 atm of pressure: humans may operate within it with a respirator and heavy protective clothing.
Solomani Security keeps a close eye on things to ensure the security of the Confederation and the well-being of its loyal citizens. Almost anyone could be a SolSec informant, passing on all sorts of useful information: some gain a reward or benefit for their actions, others are coerced, but many see it as an act of duty to help protect the Solomani state and its interests.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Hyperborea has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
The current government has declared martial law both on the surface and on their orbital highport. All visiting starships are subject to immediate search, and any materials deemed strategic or vital to the world's interests are subject to seizure without guarantee of compensation, up to and including the vessel itself.
World Population (P)[edit]
Hyperborea has a population of 300,000 sophonts (hundreds of thousands).
- This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
- The population almost entirely consists of Solomani humans.
Urbanization[edit]
The capitol and main planetary city is the eponymously named Hyperborea City. The city is constructed of locally produced interconnected plastic domes heavily reinforced with imported advanced materials. Passing through any portal within the city requires an authorized passkey for that portal, and the key will only be active for certain time periods during the local day. Individuals with higher status have higher priority keys, giving more access: the priority of a key also determines how likely an individual is to be stopped and searched.
- Most citizens strongly identify with their home dome.
- Access outside of the domes is commonly granted.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The most commonly heard languages are:
- Euxene French, a Terran language principally spoken in the Euxene Cluster.
- Rim Anglic, a dialect of Anglic and the principal language of the Confederation.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Hyperborea possesses a Technology Level of TL–9.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics and satellite communication and data networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fusion power.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Ultra high-speed trains and early grav vehicles.
- Water: High efficiency sailcraft, multihulled seacraft, improved artificial gills.
- Air: Tiltrotorcraft, exotic VTOL's, PARWIG, and rocket-assisted suborbitals.
- Space: SSTO spacecraft, early military spacecraft (System Craft), and interstellar STL starships
- FTL: Prototype Jump Drive-1.
World Government (G)[edit]
Hyperborea is governed by a Charismatic Dictatorship. Charismatic governments justify their ability to rule by simply asserting their right to rule. Charismatic dictatorships are typically young governments, coming as a recent change, and rely on the leader(s) to supply head of government.
World Military[edit]
At least one sixth of the population is associated with the government military police or one of their paramilitary support units.
World Law (L)[edit]
Hyperborea has an extreme law level which covers every area of interaction. Laws are complex, detailed, and difficult to understand. Every interaction with the government requires an Advocate. Law enforcement is omnipresent and strict. Legal proceeding can take months to years to resolve and may involve dozens of people. Most worlds with this law level may be an Amber Zone or Red Zone. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (with no exception for private residences; visiting starships are only protected so long as they stay within designated starports and approach corridors). All aspects of life rigidly controlled. There is no difference between the police and the military. This world is a full-fledged police state. Oppression is legalized, though not routine.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 0 (unimportant)
World Economy[edit]
The manufacturing base produces plastics and plastic products using the world's abundant hydrocarbons. Some raw organics are exported, but its primary products are advanced forms of plastics.
- Resources: 9 (moderate)
- Labor: 4 (tens of thousands)
- Infrastructure: 2 (extremely limited)
- Efficiency: +1 (average)
World Culture[edit]
Local artistic culture is rather bland, being inspired by a brutally limited set of decades-old off-world entertainment programs. A small group of "underground artists" decorate areas in avant-garde or naturalistic styles: while their work is tacitly accepted and even protected, possessing items used to do this "guerilla decorating" can lead to arrest and imprisonment.
A number of sports native to the world are very popular. There is intense rivalry between the teams of each habitation dome.
- Heterogenity: 7 (discordant)
- Acceptance: 5 (very aloof)
- Strangeness: 8 (very confusing)
- Symbols: 5 (concrete)
