Orient is a moderate population fluid world with over a hundred million, but not yet a billion sophonts.
- A fluid world has an oceanic geography consisting of heavily contaminated water or a substance such as ammonia, methane, hydrocarbons, or other exotic liquid.
- It is a member of the Solomani Confederation in the Wovoka Subsector of Aldebaran Sector.
- This is a frozen world, with a climate of extremely low temperatures.
- This is a "Puzzle" world designated as an Amber Zone. Caution is advised since the world has an environment, laws, customs, life forms, or other conditions that are not well understood and might be a danger to a visitor.
- It is a member of the Orient Worlds.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

Notes[edit]
The two stars of the system have an average separation of 40 AU and orbit a barycenter that lies between them.
- They have an orbital period around one another of approximately 210 standard years.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld, orbiting the primary star. It is the outermost world in the primary star's family of worlds and is also the largest rocky world in the system.
- x10 secondary rocky worlds. Four orbit the primary star, six orbit the secondary star.
- x1 warm, swollen gas giant orbiting within the habitable zone, closer to the primary star than the mainworld.
- It has two temperate moons.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Orient orbits within the outer system.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Orient is a Meso World between 10,400km and 12,000km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.7G and 0.9G. The horizon will appear about 4.7km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Orient has an Exotic Atmosphere and possesses an unusual gas mix which requires the use of oxygen tanks. Additionally, protective suits, while not necessary, are recommended. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
- It experiences very low temperatures.
- Despite its distance from the star, greenhouse gases in the atmosphere push up the world's surface temperatures.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Orient has 55-65% of its surface covered by water-ice heavily tainted with other substances, which makes it dangerous, corrosive, or toxic. Wilderness refueling will be difficult. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds may be Hell Worlds.
- The water on the surface may be unsuitable for use or consumption without extensive filtering and purification.
- Refining for fuel may cause issues with shipboard purification plants.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
It is an older, extremely cold world with little tectonic activity. Barren mountains cross the continents and the surface of the world's seas are covered by a crust of ice many kilometers thick. Below the ice are oceans of contaminated liquid water.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Orient is a Puzzle World and is designated as an Amber Zone. It presents particular risks and dangers due to the environment or native life forms, laws or customs, or other conditions that are not well understood.
- Visitors are advised to act with caution.
It is the principal world of the Orient Worlds, a small group of systems in the spinward-rimward corner of Wovoka Subsector, in Aldebaran Sector.
The world's culture is Solomani, with considerable original influence from the ancient cultures of the Terran Eurasian continent. Life on the world is energy-intensive, but with an extensive grid of fusion reactors, it is at least comfortable. The natural organic resources present on the world make the creation of many products inexpensive. There is considerable traffic through this system.
The Swords of Confucius (the Swords) are Orient's paramilitary police force and army. They have full access to the most advanced technology available for combat, observation, tracking, analysis, and prediction, for the explicit purpose of providing constant, perfect oversight. Privacy, in practice, does not exist. The laws appear to earnestly try to provide fair judgement, but there is continuous stress on all aspects of life and society.
- The Swords themselves are watched and judged by their own Judges of the Edge. The Judges are rumored to be watched in turn by their own supervisory group.
- In each case, there is one pattern: the final judgement must be given by a human, in person.
The world is known for creating high quality, highly durable plastics (referred to as Orient Plastics) made from naturally occurring hydrocarbons found on the world. These plastics are used to manufacture so-called Orient Domes, large habitation structures commonly seen across the region.
Solomani Security keeps a close eye on things to ensure the security of the Solomani State and the well-being of its loyal citizens. Almost anyone could be a SolSec informant, passing on all sorts of useful information: some gain a reward or benefit for their actions, others are coerced, while many see it as an act of duty to help protect the the State and its interests.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Orient has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
Several trade downports are available, but all travel deemed non-commercial is restricted to the Downport Welcome, with the planet's capital city effectively acting as its startown.
| Orient has a single highport, Orient High, and all inbound traffic is required to dock and pass customs inspection, which can be very thorough. Beyond that, the high port provides a standard Solomani experience, and local legal requirements are only applied to permanent residents. Orient High is currently (possibly, continually) undergoing an extensive refit, with the intention to multiply its capacity, increase its automation, and upgrade its rating to a class-A level.
Memoirs of a Casual Traveller |
Access to the system's inner planets, including the system's gas giant, is restricted to approved scientific missions.
- Refined fuel is available at the highport at roughly half standard prices.
World Population (P)[edit]
Orient has a population of 200,000,000 sophonts (hundreds of millions).
- The population almost entirely consists of Solomani humans.
Urbanization[edit]
Cities are domed, with key coded access controls at all doorways.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The most commonly heard languages are:
- Chinese, the collective name for a family of Terran languages that are widely spoken across the region.
- Rim Anglic, a dialect of Anglic and the principal language of the Confederation.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Orient possesses a Technology Level of TL–11 or TL-B in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land, Water & Air: Personal G-Tubes and advanced gravcraft.
- Space: Advanced interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-2.
World Government (G)[edit]
Orient is governed by a Charismatic Oligarchy, like a charismatic dictatorship in that a larger group has asserted their right to rule. The group will likely have better rules of succession than a single dictator and may last longer, or may transition to a non-charismatic dictatorship.
The Government is a shadowy group known as the Sages of Confucius, who apply ancient Terran philosophy, in incredible detail, to every aspect of everyday life. They act with absolute power, within the precincts of the ancient laws and logics they follow.
World Military[edit]
The Swords, Orient's paramilitary force, is broken into mission-specific subgroups. There is a wet navy equivalent, while the Atmospheric Defense Sword is interesting in that their jets carry oxygen, and breathe atmospheric methane-ethane. The Sword of the Void, the world's nascent space force, boasts a number of missile cruisers, smaller escort and support vessels, and a squadron of System Defense Boats.
World Law (L)[edit]
Orient has an extreme law level which covers every area of interaction. Laws are complex, detailed, and difficult to understand. Every interaction with the government requires an Advocate. Law enforcement is omnipresent and strict. Legal proceeding can take months to years to resolve and may involve dozens of people. Most worlds with this law level may be an Amber Zone or Red Zone. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (with no exception for private residences; visiting starships are only protected so long as they stay within designated starports and approach corridors). All aspects of life rigidly controlled with disproportionate punishments for even minor legal infractions. There is no difference between the police and the military. This world is a full-fledged police state. Oppression is legalized and routine.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 2 (ordinary)
World Economy[edit]
Exports include hydrocarbon fuels, advanced plastics, and finished organic products, which bring in considerable cash. Advanced, high-quality plastic habitation domes are produced here in quantity, and can be fabricated on a bespoke basis as well. These Orient Domes are found across the sector in a variety of environments.
- Resources: B (abundant)
- Labor: 7 (tens of millions)
- Infrastructure: 8 (generally available)
- Efficiency: -1 (average)
World Culture[edit]
- Heterogenity: D (fragmented)
- Acceptance: A (very friendly)
