Both stars are relatively young, at around 3 billion years old.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld, orbiting the orange primary star within its habitable zone.
- x10 secondary rocky worlds. Six orbit the orange primary star and four orbit the red secondary star.
- x1 planetoid belt, orbiting in the red secondary star's outer system.
- x2 gas giants. A large gas giant named Nid orbits the orange primary star, while a small gas giant named Nichée orbits the red secondary star.
- Both retain families of moons.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Grande-Terre orbits towards the outer edge of its star's habitable zone.
- It receives relatively low levels of stellar energy.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Grande-Terre is a Meso World between 12,000km and 13,500km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.8G and 1.1G. The horizon will appear about 5.1km away. Vessels with 1G of thrust should check with local starport authorities before attempting to land using emergency power.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Grande-Terre has a pressure of 0.10 to 0.42 atmospheres. The very thin pressures require a respirator or Oxygen Mask. TL–5 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
- It experiences relatively low temperatures.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Grande-Terre has 35-45% of its surface covered by liquid water. There will be a number of small seas or one larger body of water. Wilderness refueling is possible.
- The world's seas are crusted with pack ice.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
Grande-Terre has large polar ice caps, with barren wastelands between them.
(Blank map, predominantly dry world.)
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Abundant native life occupying every available ecological niche. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
- Native lifeforms are cryophilic - they thrive in low temperatures.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Grande-Terre was settled on or about 955 by colonists from Euxene, following the troubled colonization of Soror. Much like Soror, the Grande-Terre colonists were an opportunistic group of individualists who negotiated a land-rush contract with the government of Euxene, primarily based on incomplete scans of the system and the mainworld. Given the lessons learned during the Soror debacle, Republic military forces staked out a central fief in advance, and used it to guide and monitor incoming colonists. The site now contains the Downport and its startown.
Over 70 spacecraft departed at the same time from Euxene with the basic rules being that a successful craft landing on the solid surface of Grande-Terre would lay claim to 100 km radius of land. Independent black-box devices provided by the Republic and monitored by the military would verify each landing. Some larger vessels, of course, deployed secondary craft to exploit the rules. These colonists included a larger Aslan contingent than with the Soror colonization.
Once settlements had been established by each group, and formally charted, the military withdrew. Republic patrols occasionally pass thru the system from the base at Myrthe.
Using an ancient Terran term, this world is a "wild, wild west" zone. Rules are loose, possession is nine tenths of the law, and everyone is armed. That said, the owners of the industrial equipment who maintain ore production and launch rights become rapidly wealthy and retire young. Prices are high, but wages can be equally high: a lucky hard worker can make enough to comfortably retire to a core Republic world in about 10 years.
While Grande-Terre has many accessible resources it has little in the way of comfort. It only has a very thin atmosphere, it has a chilly climate, and much of its water is locked into vast polar glaciers. There are some vacuum settlements on the moons of Nid, the primary star's solitary gas giant, where there are exposed veins of ore for the taking.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Grande-Terre has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
There are 3 launch points in a single, basic downport.
World Population (P)[edit]
Grande-Terre has a population of 60,000,000 sophonts (tens of millions).
- About 95% of the population (roughly 55 million individuals) is made up of Solomani humans.
- Around 5% of the population (less than 5 million individuals) consists of Aslan.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The most commonly heard languages are:
- Euxene French, a Terran language principally spoken in the Euxene Cluster.
- Rim Anglic, a dialect of Anglic and the principal language of the Confederation.
- Trokh, the principal language of the Aslan.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Grande-Terre possesses a Technology Level of TL–9.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics and satellite communication and data networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fusion power.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Ultra high-speed trains and early grav vehicles.
- Water: High efficiency sailcraft, multihulled seacraft, improved artificial gills.
- Air: Tiltrotorcraft, exotic VTOL's, PARWIG, and rocket-assisted suborbitals.
- Space: SSTO spacecraft, early military spacecraft (System Craft), and interstellar STL starships
- FTL: Prototype Jump Drive-1.
World Government (G)[edit]
Grande-Terre is governed by a Participatory Democracy where eligible voters determine laws and policy. What determines an eligible voter varies. There may be smaller councils or regional bodies to draft the policies voted upon. Leadership of the government and all members of the bureaucracy are determined by the voting population.
Grand-Terre colonists adhered to the Euxene Colonization Agreement and send Departmental Parties to the planetary Parliament. Agreements have importance only if the quorum is large enough, or includes the more powerful groups.
World Military[edit]
Scattered groups work together at an almost tribal level.
World Law (L)[edit]
Grande-Terre has no law in practice. It is an Anarchy. On many worlds, this by itself justifies an Amber Zone advisory. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate.
There is very little law here beyond that which an employer demands, or the resources that one can bring to bear.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 0 (unimportant)
World Economy[edit]
The world's economy is centered around ore extraction and some refining. The majority of its commercial commodities consist of metals and bulk minerals. Much of its infrastructure is geared towards mineral extraction and processing and moving materials between sites.
- Resources: D (very abundant)
- Labor: 6 (millions)
- Infrastructure: 7 (generally available)
- Efficiency: +1 (average)
World Culture[edit]
- Heterogenity: 5 (harmonious)
- Acceptance: 7 (aloof)
- Strangeness: 9 (extremely confusing)
- Symbols: C (very abundant)
