Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Soror has a solitary primary star.
- It is an orange main sequence.
The star is relatively young, with an approximate age of 3 billion years.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x9 secondary rocky worlds.
- x4 gas giants, named Claire, Dominique, Julia, and Jeanne.
- Claire is a hot gas giant orbiting very close to the star.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Soror is a Meso World between 8,800km and 10,400km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.6G and 0.8G. The horizon will appear about 4.4km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Soror has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. The Thin Atmosphere does not require survival gear although it may be hard on sophonts not accustomed to it.
- It experiences relatively high temperatures.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Soror has 85-95% of its surface covered by liquid water with a few small continents, and a number of islands and archipelagos. Dry land is limited. Wilderness refueling is possible.
Satellites[edit]
Soror retains a single vacuum moon named Frere.
- It orbits once every few days.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
Soror is a world with a vast world-ocean, with a single main continent and some co-located archipelagoes. It is also in the midst of an ice age, with large ice caps extending down to the 45th latitude. The massive hydrographic percentage, combined with the thin atmosphere, results in a high global humidity and near permanent mist and cloud layers.
(Blank map, predominantly watery world.)
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Exotic aquatic native life occupying a few specialist ecological niches. Its metabolic functions help drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
- Scientists have determined that most indigenous life is concentrated around undersea thermal vents.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Soror was settled at or about 935 by a wave of colonists from Euxene, following the colonization of Myrthe.
The Soror colonists were an opportunistic group of individualists, who negotiated a land-rush contract with the government of Euxene, given on the basis of long-range scans of the system and the designated mainworld specifically. Over 50 spacecraft departed at the same time from Euxene, with the only rules being that a successful craft landing on the solid surface of Soror would lay claim to 100 km radius of land. An independent black-box devices provided by Euxene would verify each landing. Some larger vessels, of course, deployed secondary craft to exploit the rules. Others left early without black-boxes, but with heavy weaponry.
The bulk of the colonists arrived within a 48 hour span. The earliest arrivals – later referred to as The Earliers – were waiting for them, and attempted to kill, capture, and extort possession of the black-box rights from all who landed. The contract-abiding colonists were more heavily-armed than the Earliers had expected and were also more suspicious. The initial clashes were epic, with large losses on both sides. The Earliers managed to extort rights from four landing teams, concentrated on the eastern escarpment of the main Continent, but were otherwise contained. The remaining colonists surrounded those sites, expanding along the coast and into the coastal mountains. Each landing site founded its own settlement, and promptly entrenched themselves. At that point, Euxene validated the black-box positions, mapped the officially recognized settlements, resolved any overlaps, and washed their hands of the situation.
The Sororans followed the Euxene Colonization Agreement, and sent Departmental Parties to the Parliament. The presence of heavily-armed MP staffs resulted in very polite discussions in most cases, with a few notably violent and bloody clashes. The losing Departments eventually provided replacement staffs that were both more heavily-armed and more polite. The result was a standard year of internal bickering and the formation of political blocs as the settlements themselves attempted to establish a status quo.
Over time, the culture has evolved to more of a cooperative-yet-competitive nature. There are now established allied regions, which contain settlements. There are regional and local rivalries of various intensities. Most if not all citizens and visitors are armed with effective weaponry. Weapons of mass-destruction are the only things that are widely agreed against. Most settlements take extensive steps to make it difficult for young adults to create excuses for gun fights and private wars, and those steps have been proven to be needed. Nonetheless, the presence of weapons is an ingrained part of the culture and is enshrined in the Constitution...in expansive language.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Soror has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
The Soror Highport was built approximately 50 years ago with funds from the Euxene government. Now, it is run by an equal mix of Euxene and Soror personnel.
Downports have been built on a regional level. The largest downport is the Early Downport on the eastern coast.
- Discussions are still ongoing as to where to site a global Downport.
World Population (P)[edit]
Soror has a population of 10,000,000 sophonts (tens of millions).
- About 95% of the population (roughly 9.5 million individuals) is made up of Solomani humans.
- Around 5% of the population (less than 500,000 individuals) consists of Aslan.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The most commonly heard languages are:
- Euxene French, a Terran language principally spoken in the Euxene Cluster.
- Rim Anglic, a dialect of Anglic and the principal language of the Confederation.
- Trokh, the principal language of the Aslan.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Soror possesses a Technology Level of TL–11 or TL-B in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land, Water & Air: Personal G-Tubes and advanced gravcraft.
- Space: Advanced interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-2.
World Government (G)[edit]
Soror is governed by a Participatory Democracy where eligible voters determine laws and policy. What determines an eligible voter varies. There may be smaller councils or regional bodies to draft the policies voted upon. Leadership of the government and all members of the bureaucracy are determined by the voting population.
The Soror Parliament is populated by a trio of MPs from each settlement, each elected locally by 6 year terms, every 2 years.
World Military[edit]
Virtually the entire citizenry is armed. Most regions have one or two craft that can provide for world-level security.
World Law (L)[edit]
Soror has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.
Sororans are armed and well practiced with their arms. Most have never fired in anger, but many have been part of a "dispute" at some point or another. Those who choose to be a part of law enforcement are well-respected, soft-spoken, and very well-equipped.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 2 (ordinary)
World Economy[edit]
There are several local industries based on the strengths of the original colonists for each settlement and the local mineral deposits. Some bespoke bioengineered cattle have been imported from Ivraie along with some altered ivraie grasses and their supporting microbial and insectoid biome.
The world's principal industries are ore mining, metals, agriculture, cattle farming, computer engineering, and virtual world modeling. Major exports include metal ingots, food stuffs, VR simulations.
- Resources: 9 (moderate)
- Labor: 6 (millions)
- Infrastructure: 7 (generally available)
- Efficiency: +1 (average)
World Culture[edit]
Several regional universities have been built, and there are commonly at least one technical college per settlement. The world information net is well established, albeit not at the level of most Imperial or even Solomani standards. Vacation trips are usually planned to the higher mountain peak-towns that extend above the cloud layers. Some peak-towns have gone so far as to bore residential tunnels, but they are only now beginning to see some tourist trade from the core Republic worlds.
- Heterogenity: C (fragmented)
- Acceptance: 9 (friendly)
- Strangeness: 5 (distinct)
- Symbols: 8 (somewhat abstract)
