Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Ivraie has a solitary primary star.
- It is a yellow main sequence.
The star is unusually young, with an age of approximately 2.4 billion years.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x8 secondary rocky worlds.
- The inhabited worlds are named Verre, Magnum, and Capitaine.
- x2 gas giants, named Bouteille and Noah.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Ivraie is a Meso World between 10,400km and 12,000km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.7G and 0.9G. The horizon will appear about 4.7km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Ivraie has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. The Thin Atmosphere does not require survival gear although it may be hard on sophonts not accustomed to it.
- It experiences generally moderate temperatures.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Ivraie has 75-85% of its surface covered by liquid water with a few large continents and extensive islands. Wilderness refueling is possible.
Satellites[edit]
Ivraie retains a single vacuum moon named Coupe.
- It orbits once every few days.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
Ivraie is a young planet, with very active plate tectonics. Tremors and earthquakes are common. It is largely an ocean world, with two continents, named La Grand Plat and La Petite Plat and numerous archipelagos and islands.
(Blank map, predominantly watery world.)
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Abundant aquatic native life occupying every available marine ecological niche. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
- The most advanced native land lifeforms are simple plants and a few species of tiny insectoids.
- A number of the ocean's lifeforms, including enormous apex predators, are being studied by Ivraien scientists.
An entire land ecosystem has been imported from offworld and is thriving, with many previously barren regions now exhibiting dense vegetation and many types of animals, including escaped agricultural beasts that have become feral.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Ivraie was originally settled by colonists from Euxene via the Gir system in 945. The colonization drive was based on partial data recovered from a dead Scout whose ship had misjumped. The settlement ship, La Voyageur, was captained by Antoine de Bougainville who also made the final astronavigational calculations. Legend has it that he couldn't determine a final critical value, so he literally drank 3 liters of good champagne, guessed, and jumped. When they arrived two subjective weeks (or an eternity) later, in system, the colonists, crew, and poor Captain Bougainville had apparently bookended the voyage by consuming the entirety of champagne brought with them… and named the system Ivraie, loosely translated as drunken from the ancient Terran Latin ēbrius. Others take it as meaning "chaff", as the long voyage separated the "good grain" – those willing to work together to deal with the situation they found themselves in – from the "chaff" – those who were present for their own selfish reasons.
La Voyageur remains in orbit, maintained as a historical museum. Once every decade, its Jump-4 drive is spun up for an in-system micro-Jump. Champagne is involved.
The bioengineering industry remains prominent, and the crops and livestock developed for this world are well-adapted. Many citizens of Ivraie have used this local bioengineering prowess to slightly modify themselves and their children over the last two centuries to better deal with various atmospheric pressures, including thin and dense pressures; Ivraien citizens are at home both on Ivraie and Euxene. Crop yields are good, and are very nutrient-rich and generally highly flavorful. Nonetheless, there is a small but vocal minority who oppose the widespread use of bioengineering, and seek to return to more natural farming stocks.
During the Rim War the Confederation attempted to "relocate" a number of non-human races to other worlds, principally to fill gaps in the labor market caused by humans serving in the military. Large numbers of Kwaz were shipped to the world to assist with agricultural tasks. Their services are in demand, they have integrated relatively well, and generally they are thriving.
Solomani Security keeps a close eye on things to ensure the security of the Confederation and the well-being of its loyal citizens. Almost anyone could be a SolSec informant, passing on all sorts of useful information: some gain a reward or benefit for their actions, others are coerced, but many see it as an act of duty to help protect the Solomani state and its interests.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Ivraie has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
- The Ivraien Highport is dubbed The Toast of Ivraie or simply The Toast. Its construction was largely funded by the government of Euxene approximately 50 years ago.
- The primary downport is La Cave, located on La Grand Plat, within an ancient, very large crater which likely gives it it's name. The La Cave startown is rather perfunctory, and mostly serves as a customs depot and passpoint to the Capitol.
- La Petite Plat also has a downport, named Fountaine.
World Population (P)[edit]
Ivraie has a population of 20,000,000 sophonts (tens of millions).
- About 95% of the population (roughly 19 million individuals) is made up of Solomani humans.
- Around 5% of the population (approximately 1 million individuals) consists of Kwaz.
Urbanization[edit]
The planetary Capitol is Bougainville, named after Capitain Antoine de Bougainville of the Colony ship La Voyageur which made orbit in 945. It sits close to the base of an older mountain range on the continent of La Grand Plat and is the closest urban center to La Cave. The architecture reflects the tectonic dynamicism, being highly reinforced, low, and Brutalist in nature. Most large cities are found near the coastlines, but there are many farming villages and towns in the interior. The coastal cities are built with sea-walls, berms, and pumping stations to deal with tsunamis.
The Kwaz present on the world live in their own communities, generally built close to human settlements. Structures are constructed to serve their physiological needs and are generally far too small for humans to comfortably enter.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The most commonly heard languages are:
- A local dialect of Euxene French, a Terran language principally spoken in the Euxene Cluster.
- Native Kwaz languages.
- Rim Anglic, a dialect of Anglic and the principal language of the Confederation.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Ivraie possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land & Water: Grav belts and maturing gravcraft.
- Air: Greatly improved hybrid grav-aircraft.
- Space: Improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-1.
Although the world has abundant resources, due to the lack of certain key raw materials the technological level has not significantly advanced since colonization.
World Government (G)[edit]
Ivraie is governed by an Impersonal Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government takes another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy dictates government policy and its execution. Government leadership is reduced to little more than figureheads and does not select the bureaucracy leadership or its members.
World Military[edit]
Ivraie operates a handful of System Defense Boats (SDB) for in-system exploration, patrols, and defense against pirates. It depends on the Republic to handle any larger threat.
World Law (L)[edit]
Ivraie has a high law level with laws covering many areas of interactions of people, corporations, and the government. A few worlds with this law level may be Amber Zones. Any interaction with the judicial system requires an Advocate trained in the local legal system. Law enforcement is present almost everywhere, either as people or via technology. Legal proceedings can take weeks to months to resolve and involve a dozen or more people. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (outside private residences or visiting starships).
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 3 (ordinary)
World Economy[edit]
The economy is largely agrarian, using vast swaths of the available landmass for the slow growth crops that grow in the thin atmosphere, and a stock of bioengineered cattle adapted to the same. The Ivraien grass, called "ivraie", is also highly bioengineered to be convertible into an alcoholic bubbly wine. This wine is then distilled into local brandies and cognacs… and sometimes a liquid fuel for farm vehicles. All of the above can be generically referred to as ivraie.
The world's exports are principally foodstuffs of all kinds, and is especially known for its alcoholic beverages. It also provides specialty enzymes and scientific consulting.
- Resources: A (abundant)
- Labor: 6 (millions)
- Infrastructure: C (very extensive)
- Efficiency: -1 (average)
World Culture[edit]
The culture is derived from that of Euxene, but has regressed somewhat. The Euxene French spoken here is now a distinct dialect, although largely understandable by native speakers.
- Heterogenity: 3 (monolithic)
- Acceptance: A (very friendly)
- Strangeness: 6 (very distinct)
- Symbols: 6 (somewhat concrete)
