Neworld style="width: 250px; height: 350px; border: solid 1px black; float: right; clear: left" | |||||||||||||||||
Neworld Sector (Imperial coordinates 1/-4) is located Rimward of Alpha Crucis and Trailing of Aldebaran.
- Neworld consists of sparsely settled frontier mixed with a few very old Terran settlements and lost colonies that have created their own pocket states that are only partly integrated into the Solomani Confederation.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
Physcial Astrography[edit]
The following astrographic data regarding the sector has been determined:
- It is a relatively low stellar density region.
- The sector is studded with rift density regions.
- The brightest star in the sector is Beta Leporis, the yellow bright giant primary of the Nihal system.
Stellar Distribution[edit]
A basic map showing the distribution and size of stars within Neworld Sector, right:
- The color corresponds to the visible color of the star, which links to its spectral classification.
- The size as shown indicates both the physical size of the object and its relative brightness.
Note that the stars as depicted are representative. Any star, no matter what its size, is a mere speck within the hex it occupies.
- Ordinary main sequence stars can barely be seen from even a hex away.
- Huge, intensely luminous giant stars can be seen from across the sector and far beyond.
Rift Regions[edit]
The spinward-coreward quadrant of Neworld Sector is a relatively high stellar density region, containing a number of large clusters. The rest of the sector has multiple well defined rift regions as well as a number of minor voids that are too small to qualify as a true rift. These various areas of lower stellar density serve to hamper travel and restrict commerce within the sector's boundaries.
- Jump-2 and Jump-3 corridors of stars, the arteries of interstellar trade connecting the various clusters, snake between their empty expanses.
Named rift regions include:
- Bautzen Void
- Corundel Rift
- Delos Void
- Despin Rift
- Eridani Void
- Eridani Waste
- Finger of Cythera
- Gulf of Asphodel
- Hesperian Void
- Jerico Expanse
- Kostov Void
- Oppenheimer Expanse
- Quatuor Rift
Nature of Rifts[edit]
Locally at least, a rift is an astrographic concept based purely on Jump Drive performance.
Rift regions generally relate to regular commercial traffic and the way it travels between destinations. Merchant vessels with jump-4 drives or better are fairly rare because of the higher costs involved in operating the vessel, the lower revenue generated by the reduced cargo space due to the need for large fuel tanks, and the relative paucity of technologically advanced maintenance facilities within the region. As a result, the vast majority of merchant vessels are capable of jump-3 or less.
- Large areas that cannot be crossed by Jump-3-capable vessels are denoted as rifts.
- The nature and borders of a rift may be determined by other criteria in different regions.
In order to qualify as a rift, the region must have ten or more contiguous hexes. Many areas have minor void regions that are too small to qualify as a true rift, but are still significant enough to seriously hamper and channel interstellar travel.
Military vessels and specialist ships such as couriers are often only marginally affected by the presence of smaller rifts. Larger rift regions have a greater significance, requiring lengthy detours or complex refueling operations or creating bottlenecks that even the longest range vessels are forced to travel through.
- Large rifts within the region form a key part of Confederation defense strategies, serving to channel prospective attackers towards defensive "hardpoints".
Economic Astrography[edit]
The following commercial and economic data regarding the sector is available:
Corporations[edit]
Corporations and organizations active within the sector include:
- Confederation Heavy Industries (CHI) LLC, a corporation with interests in heavy engineering and starship manufacture active throughout the trailing half of the Confederation.
- ConTech, a corporation specializing in life sciences, particularly large-scale bio-terraforming projects, medicine, and cloning.
- Guardian Military Systems, a large corporation involved in defense and armaments manufacture, with its core area of operations within Aldebaran Sector.
- Lamarck Minerals, a corporation with a relatively small core area of operations in the Solomani Rim, but with growing interests in resource extraction and processing throughout the Solomani Sphere.
- Orion Metallurgy Corporation (OMC), engaged in resource exploration, extraction, and processing throughout the Solomani Sphere.
- Panstellar, a major transport and logistics corporation.
- Probable Technologies, a scientific research organization involved with academia and heavy industry. It works extensively with the Confederation military.
- Rising Phoenix News Service (RPNS), the premier news and media organization within the Solomani Sphere. It has a strong pro-Confederation bias.
- Solomani Chemicals (SolChem), a corporation involved in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries principally operating in Alpha Crucis Sector.
- Solomani Shipping, a major transport and logistics corporation.
- Star Patterns Trading, a Hiver corporation involved in transport and logistics. It maintains good relations with both the Solomani Confederation and the Imperium.
- Transstar, a Solomani megacorporation specializing in transport and logistics. It operates across 13 sectors, represented by the 13 stars in its logo.
- ZeeCorp, a corporation with interests in manufacturing active throughout the Solomani Confederation. It is a major producer of robots.
Mains Clusters & Traces[edit]
High cargo capacity, low jump rating vessels move along the clusters and traces of the sector, carrying vast amounts of goods and commodities between their member worlds. Jump-2 and Jump-3 feeder routes work their ways around the rifts and voids that dot the region, linking the various clusters and traces.
Importance[edit]
A chart is provided showing importance as green circles centered on a world, with larger circles indicating greater importance and overlapping circles giving an overview of a region's economic significance. While importance is largely a measure of raw economic power, other influencing factors include starport quality, political significance, a high planetary habitability rating, or even the local culture.
Importance also gives a good indication of the sphere of influence that individual worlds exert.
Mains[edit]
Main is an astrographic term for groups of 50 or more systems that are accessible by jump-1-capable starships.
Mains are highlighted in green: no mains lie within the sector.
Clusters[edit]
Cluster is a broad astrographic term for groups of between 10 and 50 systems that are accessible by jump-1-capable starships.
Clusters are highlighted in tan: five clusters lie wholly or partially within the sector, while one (the Elton Cluster) lies adjacent to the sector's coreward border.
- Balboa-Coronel Cluster.
- Belicheki Cluster
- Borethane Cluster
- Boise Group (a named region of the Borethane Cluster)

- Harmonious Group
- Holmberg Trace
- Kostov Cluster
- Obverse Group
- Petrov Trace
- Shepherd Trace
- Sophian Trace
- Vodamir Trace
- Zera Cluster
Jump Bridges[edit]
Jump Bridges are locations within empty hexes that contain caches of fuel and supplies. They allow lower jump rating vessels to bridge gaps between distant worlds by providing a halfway point. The hexes they lie within are vast, and without exact coordinates to jump to within it a vessel could end up with empty tanks in empty wilderness, perhaps as much as a light-year away from any hope of rescue. Where they do exist, Jump Bridges are heavily guarded and access is not generally granted to those without the correct credentials.
- No commercial jump bridges currently exist within the sector.
- It has long been rumored that the Confederation may maintain covert jump bridge facilities, but no reliable proof of this has ever been provided.

Politics & Diplomacy (Interstellar Relations)[edit]
The Solomani Confederation controls over half of the sector, including all of subsectors A through G and parts of subsectors H through L.
Polity Listing[edit]
The following polities can be found within this sector:
Major Powers[edit]
- Solomani Confederation (human powers):
Independent Powers (Pocket Empires)[edit]
Non-Aligned Powers (World-States)[edit]
- Non-Aligned, Human-dominated.
- Non-Aligned, Unclaimed (uninhabited worlds).
Historical Powers[edit]
- Terran Confederation (-2400 to -2204). Controlling all eight coreward subsectors completely or in part for around two centuries.
- Rule of Man (-2204 to -1776). Controlling all eight coreward subsectors completely or in part for nearly six centuries.
- Terran Mercantile Community (-1862 to -1110). Active across the sector for almost seven centuries. While it was non-governmental in principle, it actively claimed and exploited vast regions of space, though most of the territory it controlled was barren wilderness.
- Third Imperium (588 to 871). The Imperium claimed the former territories of the Terran Mercantile Community in 588, based on rather insubstantial claims, and directly controlled them until it devolved its authority to the Solomani Autonomous Region in 704, though it retained titular authority until 871. The Mercantile Community had ceased to exist about 1,600 years before and few of the worlds that came under Imperial dominion had any tangible link to it.
- Solomani Autonomous Region (704 to 940). Worlds within a radius of 50 parsecs of Terra were granted self-government through a charter from Empress Margaret I in 704. By 940, Solomani oppression of non-human (and non-Solomani) worlds forced Empress Margaret II to revoke the region's charter.

- The Dienbach Grüpen, which has eight systems in Oppenheimer and Dienbach Subsectors.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Neworld Sector, along with Aldebaran and Canopus Sectors, are collectively known as the Solomani Confederation's rimward frontier.
Because the Solomani Confederation's rimward border requires significantly less resources to defend than the Coreward border, the Neworld Sector Fleet is notably weaker than other sector fleets, even though it is also responsible for defense of Solomani worlds in Langere Sector.
- See: Trans-Neworld Reaches.
The population of Neworld Sector is 90% pure Solomani, with the remaining 10% consisting of primitive indigenous races and genetic uplifts such as dolphins. Not all of these indigenous sophonts have successfully assimilated into Confederation society.
Native Sophonts[edit]
The following races (sophont species) are believed to have originated within this area:

General Historical Overview[edit]
At least five Terran settlements were established in Neworld by -2204, all far outside the borders of the Terran Confederation. They were located in what are today known as Delos, Farallon, and Bautzen Subsectors. Despite these early colonies, only the Coreward subsectors of Aldebaran were heavily populated prior to the Rim War.
Confederation policies encourage rimward settlement through liberal grants of territory on unsettled worlds, creating a wide-open colonial frontier. Rival Solomani Party factions, corporations, and planetary coalitions are competing in a ‘land rush’ to claim, colonize, and tame new worlds.
Neworld is not adjacent to any hostile powers, freeing the sector of the military border conflicts that have troubled other areas. As the leadership of the Confederation Navy are reluctant to commit main fleet assets to police a region that is not threatened by external enemies, the rimward area remains a wild frontier.
