System Data[edit]

2 Gas Giants — 3 Planetoid Belts — 5 Other Worlds

The multi-belt system is filled with comets and random rocks which are thrown into the inner system by the passage of the 2 gas giants.

Mainworld Data[edit]

Asphodel is a large world with a dense and deep N-O atmosphere. Large polar ice caps are present.

Mainworld Geography & Topography[edit]

It boasts a world ocean covering 60% of the plantary surface. The northern and southern continents have several large mountain ranges that are tall enough to provide 1 atmosphere pressure living conditions within a range.

World Starport[edit]

Asphodel has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World Technology Level[edit]

Asphodel possesses a Technology Level of TL–14 or TL-E in Hexadecimal Notation.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early meson communicators.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Miniature super-batteries, early collectors, and advanced fusion plants.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:

World Government[edit]

Asphodel is governed by an Impersonal Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy dictates government policy and its execution. Government leadership is reduced to little more than figureheads and does not select the bureaucracy leadership or its members.

World Law Level[edit]

Asphodel has an extreme law level which covers every area of interaction. Laws are complex, detailed, and difficult to understand. Every interaction with the government requires an Advocate. Law enforcement is omnipresent and strict. Legal proceeding can take months to years to resolve and may involve dozens of people. A world with this law level may be an Amber Zone or a Red Zone. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (with no exception for private residences; visiting starships are only protected so long as they stay within designated starports and approach corridors). Civilian movement is rigidly controlled. On worlds with this degree of law, it is difficult to distinguish the police from the military. On others, there is no difference.

World Military[edit]

An orbiting mil-base is easily discernible to travellers, but it is strictly off-limits to civilians and travellers alike.

At least 4 military bases are visible on the surface of Asphodel, and the world-net indicates that other naval/military bases are operating on other worlds in-system.

Asphodel acknowledges a fleet of at least 4 battlegroups, including battleship-size missile craft, heavy cruisers, and a battle-rider. At least 3 wings of light fighter craft exist. The Homeguard alone is credited with 3 heavy cruisers, a reserve wing of fighters, and 3 wings of SDC system craft.

World Economy[edit]

Asphodel has a full-fledged world economy that is operating in a post-scarcity model. Most working adults are involved in the service economy, entertainment, R&D, or in Military Support. The "under-class" of non-working adults are provided with basic support payments and benefits, and access to unlimited education and training. Interestingly enough, the support payments are directly tied to the credit load and grades earned. Active students are also subject to summary draft if their skills are needed by the military.

Trade Data[edit]

Asphodel mostly trades with itself, given its distance from other viable systems. There is some import-export trade to Furness (a J-4 trip).

World Demographics[edit]

Humaniti 100% Non-humans are banned from the system.

World Culture[edit]

The overall world culture is open and inviting, with many avenues of life to explore.

The locals with whom I spoke were clear in that they believed that having a regular job or occupation was the best choice here, if you could find such a berth. Working with the Military Support seemed to be the berth of last-resort; it was too easy to find yourself in active service when you walked into the office one day. Some citizens had created Corporate Co-ops to literally create positions for themselves. Students spoke of having to carefully select courses of study to balance interest, pay, and military need. Physics and engineering students without corporate positions were highly "recruited"; sometimes even the employed scientists and engineers suddenly "found new positions".

The civil and political police forces make an effort to be both low-key and incredibly invasive. Taking notice of police controls is strongly discouraged, and just that may land one in a re-education beach resort. A combination of street arrest, cover up, psychological operations, and official denial can (and does) make even potential troublemakers literally disappear. It is rumored some are exported to Furness, but there is no proof, hard or otherwise.

NOTE: I registered as Scout with the local authorities upon arrival at the Highport, and checked in at the Travellers' Aid Society hostel on the surface with my intended itinerary. I was advised to stick closely to my itinerary and check in regularly with the hostel; strongly advised. As such, I literally sent vid-shots to the hostel every hour. Good thing, too. I was present during a public mass protest, and saw the brutal suppression tactics used (see report, section B-1). After transmitting the vid-report to the secure-top at the hostel, I lost consciousness suddenly. I awoke in a glass-walled cell with a team of 3 TAS legal professionals arguing outside with a police captain. I was eventually released after 3 days of interrogations, a period which included several subtle and not-so-subtle psychological warfare tactics. 2 of those days apparently happened before I "awoke" in the cell. Scout-service training had prepared me for the experience, but it was a stark difference to the street atmosphere I had been experiencing. I was, of course, asked to depart "at my earliest convenience".

Urbanization[edit]

Asphodel is urbanized using the mountain-city model, where a city structure is built around, on, and within a mountain range for aesthetic and air-pressure reasons. Approximately 4 Billion residents abide in these cities. The remainder (6 Billion) live on the lower slopes or on one of the seaside domed cities. The 4atm pressures at sea-level require acclimatization and often mechanical support for those who wish to go outside.

In both environments, the cities are architecturally and technically advanced (T-14) with automated public and private transport mechanisms. Restaurants are dynamic and competitive. Music venues are impressive and imaginative. Entire city quarters have been known to remake themselves after a newly conceived vision, in a cooperative effort by their denizens.

Mountain-cities are almost always snow covered, but automated systems keep the snow cover to the "decorative" level in functional zones, but allow for deeper snow areas for recreational activities such as skiing and aerosuiting, as well as snow combat sports.

The sea-level areas are generally warmer but still a bit chilly for most travellers. Summer temperatures range from 15°C to 30°C. Snow showers have been occasionally seen even in summer.
