Canopus Sector is a Solomani-dominated sector lying towards the rimward edge of Charted Space.

  • It is a lightly-settled frontier region to rimward of the Imperium.
  • It is named for the star Canopus.
  • The Aslan know it as Oleaiy'fte Sector.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

Physcial Astrography[edit]

The following astrographic data regarding the sector has been determined:

  • It is a low to average stellar density region.
  • The brightest stars in the sector are the evolving blue giants contained within the Hyades Cluster.
  • The star Canopus, also known by the ancient Arabic name "Suhayl", lies in Subsector L of this Sector.
  • The spinward-central part of the sector is a rift density region.

Stellar Distribution[edit]

A basic map showing the distribution and size of stars within Canopus Sector, right:

  • The color corresponds to the visible color of the star, which links to its spectral classification.
  • The size as shown indicates both the physical size of the object and its relative brightness.
  • The core of the Hyades Cluster, a notable astrographic feature, is shown by a blue circle.

Note that the stars as depicted are representative. Any star, no matter what its size, is a mere speck within the hex it occupies.

  • Ordinary main sequence stars can barely be seen from even a hex away.
  • Huge, intensely luminous giant stars can be seen from across the sector and far beyond.

Rift Regions[edit]

Canopus sector has a few large, fairly well defined rift regions and also contains multiple minor voids that are too small to qualify as a true rift. These various areas of lower stellar density serve to hamper travel and restrict commerce within its boundaries.

Named rift regions include:

Nature of Rifts[edit]

Locally at least, a rift is an astrographic concept based purely on Jump Drive performance.

Rift regions generally relate to regular commercial traffic and the way it travels between destinations. Merchant vessels with jump-4 drives or better are fairly rare because of the higher costs involved in operating the vessel, the lower revenue generated by the reduced cargo space due to the need for large fuel tanks, and the relative paucity of technologically advanced maintenance facilities within the region. As a result, the vast majority of merchant vessels are capable of jump-3 or less.

  • Large areas that cannot be crossed by Jump-3-capable vessels are denoted as rifts.
  • The nature and borders of a rift may be determined by other criteria in different regions.

In order to qualify as a rift, the region must have ten or more contiguous hexes. Many areas have minor void regions that are too small to qualify as a true rift, but are still significant enough to seriously hamper and channel interstellar travel.

Military vessels and specialist ships such as couriers are often only marginally affected by the presence of smaller rifts. Larger rift regions have a greater significance, requiring lengthy detours or complex refueling operations or creating bottlenecks that even the longest range vessels are forced to travel through.

  • Large rifts within the region form a key part of Confederation defense strategies, serving to channel prospective attackers towards defensive "hardpoints".

Other Astrographic Features[edit]

Hyades Cluster[edit]

Hyades Cluster
Hyades Cluster Core.jpg
Taurus Constellation Terra.png

The Hyades is the nearest open cluster to Terra, lying around 47 parsecs from Sol. It consists of a roughly spherical group of hundreds of stars sharing the same age, place of origin, chemical characteristics, and motion through space. When viewed from the surface of Terra, the Hyades form part of the head of the constellation of Taurus, the Bull.

  • The Cluster is visible to the naked eye on worlds across the region.

The core of the Cluster occupies Astrographic Hex Locations 0402, 0502, 0503, and 0602 of Hyades Subsector.

  • The Cluster contains no known viable worlds and is not marked as a travel destination on commercial star charts.
  • The whole of the core region should be considered a Red Zone for travel purposes.

A basic overview of the Cluster:

Chart Hyades Cluster Astrography.png
(Imagery sourced from Traveller Map)

  • Note that the stars as depicted are representative. Any star, no matter what its size, is a mere speck within the hex it occupies.
However, the largest of those specks shine extremely brightly.
Within the Cluster[edit]

The core of the Cluster is more than 2.5 parsecs across and lies close to the coreward edge of Hyades Subsector (Subsector A of Canopus Sector).

  • It contains around 200 stars, including a number of giant, short-lived B-type stars that have evolved off of the main sequence, several other giants, numerous main sequence stars, a small number of brown dwarf substellar objects, and a few tiny white dwarf stellar remnants.
  • The Cluster contains large amounts of ionized gas and dust which diffuse, refract, and reflect the light of the stars, giving it an ethereal glow.

The stars within the Cluster have extremely powerful, wildly fluctuating magnetic fields that interact with one another over vast distances. They twist and sculpt the vast gas clouds that surround them into ghostly bulbs, columns, and spires that can have dimensions measured in thousands of AU.

Central Anomaly[edit]

The very center of the Cluster is believed to contain a Space-Time Anomaly. The nature of this feature, if it exists, remains unclear.

Broader Effects[edit]

The tidal influence of the stars at the Cluster's core can be measured around ten parsecs away from the core region. The extended halo of stars associated with the cluster (stars sharing very similar physical characteristics and motion) extends rimward deep into Canopus Sector, to spinward into the Ustral Quadrant and Dark Nebula sectors, coreward into Magyar Sector, and trailing into Aldebaran Sector and the Solomani Rim.

  • Many of the stars within this region are in the process of escaping from the cluster.
  • The cluster's huge stars cause interference, strange tones and noises, and heavy static on commo and sensors for many parsecs around the feature.

Trade Routes[edit]

Canopus Sector Importance
Canopus Sector Clusters

High cargo capacity, low jump rating vessels move along the clusters and traces of the sector, carrying vast amounts of goods and commodities between their member worlds. Jump-2 and Jump-3 feeder routes work their ways around the rifts and voids that dot the region, linking the various clusters and traces.

Importance[edit]

A chart is provided showing importance as green circles centered on a world, with larger circles indicating greater importance and overlapping circles giving an overview of a region's economic significance. While importance is largely a measure of raw economic power, other influencing factors include starport quality, political significance, a high planetary habitability rating, or even the local culture.

Importance also gives a good indication of the sphere of influence that individual worlds exert.

Mains[edit]

Main is an astrographic term for groups of 50 or more systems that are accessible by jump-1-capable starships.

Mains are highlighted in green: no mains lie within the sector.

Clusters[edit]

Cluster is a broad astrographic term for groups of between 10 and 50 systems that are accessible by jump-1-capable starships.

Clusters are highlighted in tan: twelve clusters lie wholly or partially within the sector.

Traces[edit]

Trace is an astrographic term for groups of between 5 and 10 systems that are accessible by jump-1-capable starships.

Traces are highlighted in brown: 17 trace-sized clusters of worlds lie wholly or partially within the sector.

Navid Run[edit]

The Navid Run is a jump-2 trade route running between the the Trita Brotherhood and the Jurisdiction of Nadon.

Jump Bridges[edit]

(Chart sourced from Traveller Map)

Jump Bridges are locations within empty hexes that contain caches of fuel and supplies. They allow lower jump rating vessels to bridge gaps between distant worlds by providing a halfway point. The hexes they lie within are vast, and without exact coordinates to jump to within an empty hex a vessel could end up with empty fuel tanks, in empty wilderness, perhaps more than a light-year away from any hope of rescue. Where they do exist, Jump Bridges are heavily guarded and access is not generally granted to those without the correct credentials.

It is known that a jump bridge existed at astrographic hex location 2416 during the time of the Terran Mercantile Community (between roughly -1800 and -1100). It facilitated Jump-1 travel between the Ariette-Biton Cluster, the Rangiri Link, and the Zarn Cluster, significantly increasing local trade and commerce. As the Mercantile Community shrank to become the Old Earth Union and the financial and technological support it had provided ceased, the facility was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Its current exact astrographic coordinates and condition are unknown.

A basic chart showing the position of the jump bridge, right:

It has long been rumored that the Confederation Navy maintains covert Jump Bridge facilities, widely believed to lie within the sector's rift regions, but no reliable proof of this has ever been provided.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

Solomani Security keeps a close eye on activities and events across the sector to ensure the security of the Confederation and the well-being of its loyal citizens. Aslan, other sophonts, and humans from neutral worlds are uniformly less likely to be cooperative with Solomani interests than Confederation citizens, but almost anyone could be a SolSec informant, passing on all sorts of useful information.

The Confederation's Canopus Sector Fleet, in addition to being charged with protection of the sector, is also responsible for defense of Solomani worlds in the Ustral Quadrant.

Native Sophonts[edit]

Canopus sector was home to the Gamopedes, a peaceful Minor Race that had been classified by the Confederation as primitive indigenous aliens. The native Gamopedes were not successfully assimilated into Solomani society: they failed to adapt to a high-technology lifestyle and stopped reproducing altogether.

The following races (sophont species) are believed to have originated within this area:
