Canopus (otherwise known as Alpha Carinae or Soheil) is a borderline A/F-class white bright-giant star, approximately 310 light years from the Sol star system.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

Canopus is about 20,000 times brighter than Sol and is the most intrinsically bright star within 700 light years of Sol.

  • For a large fraction of stars in the local neighbourhood of Sol, Canopus is the "brightest star in the sky".
  • Though it is not a significantly large star, Canopus is the 2nd brightest star as seen from Terra, it is the 54th brightest star in the galaxy, and one of the brightest in Charted Space.
  • The corona of Canopus is a significant source of x-ray emission.

The star "2MASS J06234738-5351131" appears to share a common proper motion with Canopus, and is sometimes referred to as "Canopus B". The projected separation of this M dwarf from Canopus proper is approximately 1.9 pc. However, despite the large separation, "Canopus B" still lies within the estimated tidal radius (2.9 pc) of Canopus.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The star Canopus lends its name to the Canopus Sector of Charted Space.

The Canopus star system lies approximately 95.9pc from Terra, and is located in a Rimtrailing/Trailing direction from Terra at bearing 261.2o Galactic Longitude and -25.3o South Galactic Latitude.
