Zarn is a rich, agricultural, nonindustrial garden world with a near-ideal, utopian environment conducive to most sophonts and high-grade living conditions due to a bustling economy.
- As an agricultural world, this world is a near-ideal environment for producing quality foodstuffs of plant, animal, and other forms. Quality foodstuffs are a major export commodity for this world.
- It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
- This is a rich world with a prosperous and thriving world economy.
- Its economy and population are rapidly growing and living conditions are expected to quickly rise barring outside forces.
- It is a member of the Solomani Confederation in the Zarn Subsector of Canopus Sector.
- It is a balmy tropical world, with a climate of high temperatures.
- It is a member of the Zarn Cluster.
- It is the homeworld of the Zarn.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Zarn is a binary star system.
- The primary is a yellow main sequence.
- The secondary is an orange main sequence.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x10 secondary rocky worlds.
- x3 gas giants.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Zarn orbits towards the inner edge of its star's habitable zone.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Zarn is a Meso World between 8,800km and 10,400km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.6G and 0.8G. The horizon will appear about 4.4km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Zarn has a pressure of 1.50 to 2.49 atmospheres. A Dense Atmosphere requires no survival gear although it may be hard on sophonts not accustomed to it.
- It experiences relatively high temperatures.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Zarn has 45-55% of its surface covered by liquid water. Wilderness refueling is possible.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
(Blank map, predominantly dry world.)
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Abundant native life occupying every available ecological niche. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
- Native lifeforms thrive in warm, arid conditions.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Zarn is a member of (and the namesake of) the Zarn Cluster, a backwater cluster and minor trade route principally lying within Canopus Sector.
Native Sophont[edit]
The Zarn are a sophont minor race native to the world. They are descended from plains-dwelling, broadly reptillianoid omnivorous hunter-gatherers and are physically strong. They reproduce quickly, but only a very small percentage of their species is intelligent. An intelligent adult typically masses around 300 kg and measures around 2.5 meters in length: if a Zarn rears up they can reach a height of 3.5 meters.
Zarn have a bilateral symmetry, with a pair of large rear legs, a pair of thinner central limbs that serve both as balancing legs and manipulators, and a front pair of manipulator arms. The head contains the brain and major sensory organs as well as mounting two long hollow "horns" that are used to produce loud tones. Their ability to balance and turn is assisted by a large tail. They have a dense leathery hide that changes color during the course of their lives: younger Zarn are brightly colored, while older Zarn display more mottled, drab colors.
- So-called "Feral Zarn" – semi-intelligent or unintelligent members of the species – can be dangerous, aggressive, highly skilled predators. This is especially true in areas where resources are scarce.
During the Rim War the Confederation attempted to "relocate" a number of non-human races to other worlds, principally to fill gaps in the labor market caused by humans serving in the military. Large numbers of Zarn were moved to other worlds to assist with agricultural tasks, the majority being semi-intelligent but still useful members of the race. Their services remain in demand, they have integrated relatively well where they have settled, and generally they are thriving.
Solomani Security keeps a close eye on things to ensure the security of the Confederation and the well-being of its loyal citizens. Almost anyone could be a SolSec informant, passing on all sorts of useful information: some gain a reward or benefit for their actions, others are coerced, but many see it as an act of duty to help protect the Solomani state and its interests.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Zarn has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World Population (P)[edit]
Zarn has a population of 1,000,000 sophonts (millions).
- This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
- The population almost entirely consists of Zarn: there are at least a thousand non-intelligent or semi-intelligent members of the species for every sophont Zarn.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The most commonly heard languages are:
- Native Zarn languages.
- Rim Anglic, a dialect of Anglic and the principal language of the Confederation.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Zarn possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
- Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
- Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
- Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
World Government (G)[edit]
Zarn is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is by representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referenda, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.
World Law (L)[edit]
Zarn has a moderate law level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Light assault weapons, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.
