The Zarn of Zarn (Canopus 2716) are a technologically competent Minor Non-Human Race with a Non-humanoid appearance.[1]

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Zarn are descended from plains-dwelling, broadly reptillianoid omnivorous hunter-gatherers and are physically strong. They reproduce quickly, but only a very small percentage of their species is intelligent. An intelligent adult typically masses around 300 kg and measures around 2.5 meters in length: if a Zarn rears up they can reach a height of 3.5 meters.

They have a bilateral symmetry, with a pair of large rear legs, a pair of thinner central limbs that serve both as balancing legs and manipulators, and a front pair of manipulator arms. The head contains the brain and major sensory organs as well as mounting two long hollow "horns" that are used to produce loud tones. Their ability to balance and turn is assisted by a large tail. They have a dense leathery hide that changes color during the course of their lives: younger Zarn are brightly colored, while older Zarn display more mottled, drab colors.

Zarn Sophont Comparison.jpg

There are two genders, male and female. Females lay one or two eggs, which hatch into fully developed infants that can walk within a few days. Zarn mature quickly, going from hatching to adult in around 10 standard years. A typical Zarn lifespan is around 100 standard years, though an adult is typically only fully intelligent between the ages of 10 and 25 and semi-intelligent at best until their late 40s.

General Psychology[edit]

"Sophont Zarn" exhibit recognized characteristics of intelligence:

  • Conceptual thought, including abstract language.
  • Social structure, including social organization.
  • Tool use, allowing environmental manipulation.

Zarn psychology is driven by factors common to many sophonts:

  • Acquisition (stemming from the need to gather adequate nutrition),
  • Preservation (derived from the need to continue their personal existence), and
  • Perpetuation (the urge to continue the species).

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Strong and fast-breeding, Zarn have been incorporated into the Solomani Confederation as agricultural labourers and the like.

Individuals only display intelligence for a certain phase of their lifecycle. They continue to grow throughout their lives, eventually reaching masses in excess of 1000 kg in old age. As their body mass increases beyond around 400 kg their intelligence correspondingly diminishes.

Although their species numbers in the billions on Zarn, their homeworld, there are only around a million intelligent Zarn at any given time.

A significant number of Zarn never gain true intelligence. Of those that do, most are only intelligent during their early adult years. A very few remain intelligent throughout their entire adult lives. No matter what their level of intelligence, Zarn are inquisitive, cunning, have quick reactions, and on occasion can be aggressive.

Older, semi-intelligent Zarn still serve a useful role as porters and carriers, and with oversight are able to carry out simple repetitive tasks.
