Shan is a nonindustrial vacuum world, which warrants hazardous environment precautions.
- Life in a vacuum requires great discipline. After all, it only takes one forgotten seal on a vacuum suit to spell death. Those who survive tend to be very methodically-minded and attentive to small detail.
- As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Salient Subsector of Canopus Sector.
- It orbits the system's tertiary star.
- This world is a "Twilight Zone World", a planet that is tidally-locked to its star. It has a hot side that permanently faces the star, a cold side that permanently faces away, and a narrow twilight zone in-between.
- This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or above the standard for Charted Space.
- This world-system has a Naval Base, usually associated with military starships, which may be located on or off-world.
- It is part of the Fugit Arm region of the Heart of Canopus.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Shan is a trinary star system.
- The primary is a red main sequence.
- The secondary is a white dwarf stellar remnant
- The tertiary is a red main sequence.
Shan has three stars in the star system. Primary

Notes[edit]
The red main sequence primary star and the white dwarf secondary object orbit one another at an average separation of 0.25 AU.
- They have an orbital period around one another of 49 standard days.
- Interactions between matter streaming off of the active primary star and the powerful magnetic fields of the white dwarf generates intense EM noise.
The red main sequence tertiary star orbits around the primary-secondary binary pair at an average distance of 85 AU.
- It has an orbital period around primary-secondary binary pair of 775 standard years.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld, orbiting the tertiary star.
- x11 secondary rocky worlds.
- x4 have circumbinary orbits around the primary-secondary binary pair.
- x7 orbit the tertiary star.
- x4 gas giants.
- x2 have circumbinary orbits around the primary-secondary binary pair.
- x2 orbit the tertiary star.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Shan is tidally locked to its primary star.
- The star is always high in the sky on the bright face, it hangs on horizon in the twilight zone, while the cold dark face is in permanent darkness.
- The world experiences libration - a regular wobble - as it orbits, causing the star to move in the sky.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Shan is a Small World between 900km and 2,400km in diameter. The world has very low gravity between 0.05G and 0.09G. The horizon will appear about 2km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Shan has a pressure of less than 0.001 atmospheres which requires the use of a Vacc Suit. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Shan has no free-standing water or ice on the surface. Wilderness refueling isn't possible on this world. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are classified Desert World or a Hell World depending on their atmosphere.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Shan is a member of the Fugit Arm region of the Heart of Canopus, a large cluster and major trade route lying within the central-rimward part of Canopus Sector.
Interactions between the system's primary and secondary stars causes interference, strange tones and noises, and heavy static on commo and sensors.
- During major outbursts of flare activity radiation levels close to the primary-secondary binary pair are dangerously high. The mainworld is far enough to avoid any serious adverse effects, though commo and sensors will still be affected.
- Exposure to elevated radiation levels causes serious health issues and may damage unshielded electronic devices.
Although it is not a member of the Solomani Confederation, Solomani Security keeps a close eye on things to ensure the security of the Confederation and the well-being of its loyal citizens. Almost anyone could be a SolSec informant, passing on all sorts of useful information: some gain a reward or benefit for their actions, others are coerced, but many see it as an act of duty to help protect the Solomani state and its interests.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Shan has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
- This world is host to a Naval Base.
World Population (P)[edit]
Shan has a population of 70,000 sophonts (tens of thousands).
- This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
- The population almost entirely consists of humans of Solomani descent.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The most commonly heard languages are:
- Chinese, the collective name for a family of Terran languages that are widely spoken across the region.
- Rim Anglic, a dialect of Anglic and the principal language of the Confederation.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Shan possesses a Technology Level of TL–12 or TL-C in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land, Water & Air: Personal G-Tubes and advanced gravcraft.
- Space: Advanced interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-3.
World Government (G)[edit]
Shan has no central government or substantial government apparatus; an Anarchy. The largest governmental structure would be a family, tribe, or single clan. The largest group will be between 50 and 100 individuals, and there may be dozens to hundreds of them. This governmental structure can be stable over long periods of time if the population remains small or geographically separated.
World Law (L)[edit]
Shan has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Machine guns, other automatic weapons, portable energy weapons, and other military weapons, body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 0 (unimportant)
World Economy[edit]
- Resources: E (extremely abundant)
- Labor: 3 (thousands)
- Infrastructure: 2 (extremely limited)
- Efficiency: +1 (average)
World Culture[edit]
- Heterogenity: 3 (monolithic)
- Acceptance: 4 (extremely aloof)
- Strangeness: 1 (very typical)
- Symbols: B (abstract)
