Quesada is a high-population, industrial world with a billion or more sophonts in population size.
- As an industrial world, this planet has well-developed manufacturing and processing industries. Manufactured goods are a major export item.
- Its economy is rapidly growing and living conditions are expected to rapidly improve barring outside forces.
- It is a member of the Grand United States of Quesada, which is a member state of the Solomani Confederation, in the Quesada Subsector of Aldebaran Sector.
- This is a temperate world, with a climate of pleasant, average temperatures, considered to be an ideal or near-ideal environment by many different sophont species.
- This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or above the standard for Charted Space.
- This world is also the overall capital of an interstellar government with the massive extra trade and prestige associated with that role.
- This is a "Puzzle" world designated as an Amber Zone. Caution is advised since the world has an environment, laws, customs, life forms, or other conditions that are not well understood and might be a danger to a visitor.
- It is a member of the Quesada Cluster.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Quesada is a binary star system.
- The primary is a white main sequence.
- The secondary is a red main sequence.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x7 secondary rocky worlds.
- x1 planetoid belt.
- x4 gas giants.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Quesada orbits towards the outer edge of its star's habitable zone.
- It receives relatively low levels of stellar energy.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Quesada is a Meso World between 10,400km and 12,000km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.7G and 0.9G. The horizon will appear about 4.7km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Quesada has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. While the thin atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
- It experiences generally moderate temperatures.
- Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere push up the world's surface temperatures.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Quesada has 35-45% of its surface covered by liquid water. There will be a number of small seas or one larger body of water. Wilderness refueling is possible.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
Quesada has significant polar ice caps and several large mountain ranges. The coastal regions and areas around lakes are lush and fertile, but much of the rest of the surface is arid or desert.
(Blank map, predominantly dry world.)
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Abundant native life occupying every available ecological niche. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Quesada is a Puzzle World and is designated as an Amber Zone. It presents particular risks and dangers due to the environment or native life forms, laws or customs, or other conditions that are not well understood.
The government leverages its technological advantages to an extreme level of effectiveness, particularly with regard to local law levels. Personal level surveillance is evident only by how smoothly certain events are handled and how frequently circumstances will align with or against one's goals. Holoscreen projections and sound dampeners are used to isolate any police actions or violent events. Law enforcement is typically quick, non-deadly, and overwhelming, and the authorities rapidly clean up after themselves.
- Visitors are advised to act with caution.
It is a member of (and the namesake of) the Quesada Cluster, a small cluster and important trade route lying within the coreward-trailing quadrant of Canopus Sector.
It is the capital of the Grand United States of Quesada and of Quesada Subsector, and is the seat of Confederation authority.
The population of the world are descended from the Central America, South America, and the Iberian Peninsula regions of Terra, and they retain much of the culture and traditions of those areas. Attitudes tend to be friendly, though some strong Solomani attitudes are prevalent. Non-human sophonts are rare and regarded with concern, and some citizens actively see such travellers as threats and react energetically. Police will generally engage on the citizen's concerns first until the nature of the non-human sophont is clearly determined. On some rare occasions, even humans with distinctive features can be treated similarly.
Sancta Sedes[edit]
The Sancta Sedes – the seat of the Church of Quesada – is located on the world. It is a vast range of magnificent buildings centered on a huge domed cathedral. It is considered an independent political entity to both the world of Quesada and the Grand United States.
- The cathedral, its various ancillary structures, and a small region of city surrounding it are considered an independent political entity to both the world and the Grand United States of Quesada.
- Sancta Sedes maintains its own small defense force, made up of elite personnel and equipped to the highest technological standards.
The Church of Quesada has great sway over daily life and governs people's physical bodies. The holy texts and dictates of past religious authorities set boundaries for social interaction, private conduct, and public expectations. "Traditional" sex roles are enshrined in law, affecting dress, speech, occupation, and legal remedies. The concepts of gender and sex are considered equivalent in all ways.
The Quesadan Inquisition is known to be active on the world. It is a religiously sponsored investigative agency that is charged with rooting out heretical thinking. It has the authority to detain and question individuals.
- Quesada is host to the headquarters of the Inquisition.
Solomani Security keeps a close eye on things to ensure the security of the Confederation and the well-being of its loyal citizens. Almost anyone could be a SolSec informant, passing on all sorts of useful information: some gain a reward or benefit for their actions, others are coerced, but many see it as an act of duty to help protect the Solomani state and its interests.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Quesada has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
- This world is host to a Quesadan Naval Base.
- This world is host to a major Military Base.
| The Quesada Highport is an impressive display of what a Class-A highport can be – Quesada has used its significant technological advantages to ensure that visitors are made fully aware of Quesadan power. Visitors are comfortably and efficiently shuttled to where they should go with all their questions either being unobtrusively answered or obviated by artful positioning and distraction. Grav belts and G-tubes are available for rental or purchase. Variable gravity activities for individuals or groups are available and inexpensive. The food vendors and restaurants are comfortable, enjoyable, and affordable. Children are accommodated with a dedicated fun sphere, with constant monitoring by automated systems and human professionals. The Quesada Highport Museum gives a "complete" history of the world and its leaders. The advanced medical facilities are truly impressive and accessible to travellers for reasonable costs.
The Quesada Downport of Estradaponte is in many ways a counterpoint of the high port. It is larger and more spread out, with high-speed interconnects using anti-grav in quite subtle ways to hide the accelerations. There are more museums, hotel, hostels, business and meeting areas. Various forms of architecture are displayed in different areas of the down port. Just outside the outer ring are a number of "amusement parks" with various themes for "children of all ages". Both areas seem to be eminently safe. No police actions were witnessed during my stay within the ports. Memoirs of a Casual Traveller |
Note: the medical scans alone are probably worth most people's time and credits. The documentation associated with the scans notes that the information is stored for future reference.
World Population (P)[edit]
Quesada has a population of 30,000,000,000 sophonts (tens of billions).
- High Population Worlds like this tend to have huge consumer markets.
- The population almost entirely consists of Solomani humans.
Urbanization[edit]
Quesada is a heavily urbanized world, leveraging high technology to maximize convenience and minimize cost by encouraging its citizens to live in centrally planned urban zones and cityscapes. Most cities are located on or near a river or lake in the moderate valleys. Outside of the cities, vast tracts of automated farms, planetary forest reserves, and wonders (natural and constructed) abound.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The most commonly heard languages are:
- Latin, an ancient Terran language used by the Church of Quesada.
- Quesadan Spanish, an Iberian Dialect of the Spanish subfamily of languages of Terran origin spoken principally in the Grand United States of Quesada.
- Rim Anglic, a dialect of Anglic and the principal language of the Confederation.
- It is a second language within the Grand United States.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Quesada possesses a Technology Level of TL–14 or TL-E in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early meson communicators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Miniature super-batteries, early collectors, and advanced fusion plants.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land, Water & Air: Personal G-Tubes and advanced gravcraft.
- Space: Advanced interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-5.
World Government (G)[edit]
Quesada is governed by a Religious Dictatorship. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy). There is a powerful independent organization, the state religion, which has influence or direct control of the government. Like the bureaucratic governments this may simply be a strong influence with a secular government, be direct influence by virtue of controlling who may be in the leadership, or be a direct theocracy where the church leadership and bureaucracy is the government.
The Government is a bicameral "House and Senate" arrangement with a strong Executive branch. Officials are selected by a secret ballot by an unknown subset of the population, and are themselves provided with media protections. The identities of the Congressmen and Senators are not commonly known.
World Law (L)[edit]
Quesada has an extreme law level which covers every area of interaction. Laws are complex, detailed, and difficult to understand. Every interaction with the government requires an Advocate. Law enforcement is omnipresent and strict. Legal proceeding can take months to years to resolve and may involve dozens of people. A few worlds with this law level may be a Red Zone and others will be an Amber Zone. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (with no exception for private residences; visiting starships are only protected so long as they stay within designated starports and approach corridors). Civilian movement is rigidly controlled. Travel documents are frequently checked, and destinations must often be declared when traveling substantial distances across the world.
The judicial system has the advantages of overwhelming evidence. Innocent mistakes and minor lawbreaking result in proportional stern warnings, fines, and required educational classes. More serious offenses result in assignment of advocate team, evidence sharing, a time for defense preparation, followed by a quick trial, either with or without a jury. Sentences are focused on isolating the offender from society for safety reasons and re-educating them for re-entry. This process may take years or decades. Resistant offenders are sentenced to death with a two week minimum given to put their affairs in order.
