SCSS-D4 is an icy, low-population vacuum world, with a population of less than 10,000 sophonts, warranting hazardous environment precautions.
- Its surface is ice-capped with little or no atmosphere and nearly all of its water frozen.
- It is a member of the Solomani Confederation, lying within the Restricted Zone of Norumbega Subsector of Aldebaran Sector.
- This is a "forbidden" world designated as a Red Zone with an environment, laws, customs, life forms, or other conditions that make it extremely dangerous to visitors. Everyone is forbidden to travel here.
- This world is a "Twilight Zone World", a planet that is tidally-locked to its star. It has a hot side that permanently faces the star, a cold side that permanently faces away, and a narrow twilight zone in-between.
- This world toils under the control of a military government with conditions reflecting that situation, including curtailed civil rights and limited freedoms.
- This world-system has a Military Base, usually associated with military ground forces, which may be located on or off-world.
- It is a member of the Coilin Trace.
- For security reasons, this world is listed on star charts as 3224. It is also known as Coilin.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x7 secondary rocky worlds.
- x2 gas giants.
Mainworld Data[edit]
SCSS-D4 is tidally locked to its primary stars.
- The stars are always high in the sky on the bright face, they hang on horizon in the twilight zone, while the cold dark face is in permanent darkness.
- The world experiences libration - a regular wobble - as it orbits, causing the stars to move in the sky.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
SCSS-D4 is a Small World between 2,400km and 4,000km in diameter. The world has low gravity between 0.1G and 0.17G. The horizon will appear about 2.5km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
SCSS-D4 has a pressure of less than 0.001 atmospheres which requires the use of a Vacc Suit. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
SCSS-D4 has 05-15% of its surface covered by ice, either in vast sheets or contained deep within craters or fractures on the surface. Wilderness refueling is possible. Water for the inhabitants can be got by mining and melting ice.
- The surface of the world is composed of a crust of ice many kilometers thick.
- Much of the surface is cratered and covered in thick layers of regolith and dust of meteoric origin, leaving only a part of the icy outer shell exposed.
- Below the outer icy shell there may be a world-ocean of liquid water.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
It has substantial polar frost caps.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
SCSS-D4 (or Coilin, as older star charts label it) is a small, cold, airless world that is tidally-locked to its two M-class stars.
It is a member of (and the namesake of) the Coilin Trace, a small cluster lying across the border between Aldebaran Sector and Neworld Sector.
The designation "SCSS" is believed to stand for "Solomani Confederation Secured System", referring to its Red Zone status.
- The designation "D" originally denoted a Depot World – when the world was originally occupied by the Confederation military it had a naval base.
- Since then the facilities have been reduced to a military base, but the name has remained the same.
Many of the population are fervent followers of the Fount of Creation, a belief system emphasizing Terran purity. It has found particular popularity among the Confederation military forces stationed in the region.
Solomani Security keeps a close eye on things to ensure the security of the Confederation and the well-being of its loyal citizens. Almost anyone could be a SolSec informant, passing on all sorts of useful information: some gain a reward or benefit for their actions, others are coerced, but many see it as an act of duty to help protect the Solomani state and its interests.
World Starport (St)[edit]
SCSS-D4 has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
- This world is host to a major Military Base.
World Population (P)[edit]
SCSS-D4 has a population of 5,000 sophonts (thousands).
- This is a Low Population World and the population would be too low to sustain itself without a little outside assistance. This may represent the home base of a sizable but mostly transient population such as the base of a major starship expedition, the last generation of a dying colony, the first generation of a new colony, or a large outpost that will probably evolve into a colony if not stopped.
- The population almost entirely consists of Solomani humans.
Urbanization[edit]
The downport and all related urban structures are located at the trailing point on the twilight zone.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The most commonly heard languages are:
- Rim Anglic, a dialect of Anglic and the principal language of the Confederation.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
SCSS-D4 possesses a Technology Level of TL–11 or TL-B in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land, Water & Air: Personal G-Tubes and advanced gravcraft.
- Space: Advanced interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-2.
World Government (G)[edit]
SCSS-D4 has a Captive Government or Colony. The world is ruled by an external government, there is no self-rule. This is a colony or conquered area. The local government is an oligarchy appointed by, and answerable only to, the external government.
This world is directly controlled by the Solomani Confederation military.
World Military[edit]
Scout Service Note: The military base has missiles. It's how they say Hi!
World Law (L)[edit]
SCSS-D4 has an extreme law level which covers every area of interaction. Laws are complex, detailed, and difficult to understand. Every interaction with the government requires an Advocate. Law enforcement is omnipresent and strict. Legal proceeding can take months to years to resolve and may involve dozens of people. A few worlds with this law level may be a Red Zone and others will be an Amber Zone. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (with no exception for private residences; visiting starships are only protected so long as they stay within designated starports and approach corridors).
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 0 (unimportant)
World Economy[edit]
- Resources: B (abundant)
- Labor: 2 (hundreds)
- Infrastructure: 0 (non-existent)
- Efficiency: +1 (average)
World Culture[edit]
- Heterogenity: 8 (moderate)
- Acceptance: 3 (xenophobic)
- Strangeness: 1 (very typical)
- Symbols: 6 (somewhat concrete)
