Clavius is an agricultural, nonindustrial, garden world with a near-ideal, utopian environment conducive to most sophonts.
- As an agricultural world, this world is a near-ideal environment for producing quality foodstuffs of plant, animal, and other forms. Quality foodstuffs are a major export commodity for this world.
- It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
- Its economy and population are rapidly growing and living conditions are expected to moderately rise in the near future.
- It is a member of the Solomani Confederation in the Sephi Hydra Subsector of Aldebaran Sector.
- This is a temperate world, with a climate of pleasant, average temperatures, considered to be an ideal or near-ideal environment by many different sophont species.
- This world is controlled by the Massina.
- It is home to a community of Kwaz.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Clavius has a solitary primary star.
- It is a yellow main sequence.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x11 secondary rocky worlds.
- x4 gas giants.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Clavius is a Meso World between 12,000km and 13,500km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.8G and 1.1G. The horizon will appear about 5.1km away. Vessels with 1G of thrust should check with local starport authorities before attempting to land using emergency power.
- It has a surface gravity of 0.95 G.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Clavius has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. The Thin Atmosphere does not require survival gear although it may be hard on sophonts not accustomed to it.
- It experiences generally moderate temperatures.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Clavius has 45-55% of its surface covered by liquid water. Wilderness refueling is possible.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
The world has small permanent ice caps, and the two hemispheres are almost equally divided between land and water. Lakes form from river systems that rise from the various mountain ranges. A large inland sea is surrounded by some of the highest mountain ranges on the planet.
(Blank map, predominantly dry world.)
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Abundant native life occupying every available ecological niche. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Clavius is a Massinan agricultural colony: Massina has taken control of Clavius in what it regards as an "act of charity".
The world's small population had reached the point of sustainable survival when the Massinans arrived: the immigrants took the time to learn about local species and environmental conditions from them, then gradually took over farming through the use of this knowledge and advanced mechanized farming techniques. Clavius is entirely self-sufficient in food and produces enough surplus to sell large quantities of foodstuffs off-world.
During the Rim War the Confederation attempted to "relocate" a number of non-human races to other worlds, principally to fill gaps in the labor market caused by humans serving in the military. Large numbers of Kwaz were shipped to the world to assist with agricultural tasks. Their services are in demand, they have integrated relatively well, and generally they are thriving.
Solomani Security keeps a close eye on things to ensure the security of the Confederation and the well-being of its loyal citizens. Almost anyone could be a SolSec informant, passing on all sorts of useful information: some gain a reward or benefit for their actions, others are coerced, but many see it as an act of duty to help protect the Solomani state and its interests.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Clavius has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
The Clavius Welcome port is a basic facility, with some part always under construction or being upgraded. From the public plans and progress reports that have been made available, it should qualify as a Class-C downport in 2 to 4 years.
World Population (P)[edit]
Clavius has a population of 600,000 sophonts (hundreds of thousands).
- This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
- About 95% of the population (roughly 570,000 individuals) is made up of Solomani humans.
- Around 5% of the population (approximately 30,000 individuals) consists of Kwaz.
Urbanization[edit]
There is a fairly sizable capitol on the seacoast, with structures ranging from ancient stoneworks to TL–7 / TL–8 office towers. Most smaller cities have TL–6 structures with HVAC systems. Electrical power grids are sourced by a combination of nuclear reactors and biomass-burning systems.
Urbanization[edit]
The Kwaz present on the world live in their own communities, generally built close to human settlements. Structures are constructed to serve their physiological needs and are generally far too small for humans to comfortably enter.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The most commonly heard languages are:
- Native Kwaz languages.
- Quesadan Spanish, a Terran language principally spoken in the Grand United States of Quesada.
- Rim Anglic, a dialect of Anglic and the principal language of the Confederation.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Clavius possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
- Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
- Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
- Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
With the arrival of the Massinans, a Technical University system was set up serving to advance public understanding of technology and improving the world's Tech Level. Clavius has now set up public wireless networks and a rapidly growing worldnet.
World Government (G)[edit]
Clavius has a Captive Government or Colony. The world is ruled by an external government, there is no self-rule. This is a colony or conquered area. The local government is an oligarchy appointed by, and answerable only to, the external government.
Massina directly controls the government and economy of the world.
World Law (L)[edit]
Clavius has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Machine guns, other automatic weapons, portable energy weapons, and other military weapons, body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: -2 (very unimportant)
World Economy[edit]
- Resources: 6 (few)
- Labor: 4 (tens of thousands)
- Infrastructure: 2 (extremely limited)
- Efficiency: -4 (very poor)
World Culture[edit]
Pre-Massinan culture was very much about self-capability and being able to fend for yourself in difficult circumstances. Children were taught basic survival skills from a young age, and got frequent survival practice in various different environments and conditions. This cultural touchstone was adopted by the Massinans and cascades forward into public education policy.
The arrival of the Massinans was a blow to the original inhabitants of Clavius, who had been a people proud of their recent achievements. Massina, as a TL–13 culture, broadly out-classed the Clavians technologically, and their "charity" in helping their "backward brothers" still stings. This drives an animosity not only to visiting Massinans, but to all travellers, who get lumped into the same pot by most Clavians.
- Heterogenity: 8 (discordant)
- Acceptance: 3 (xenophobic)
- Strangeness: 4 (somewhat distinct)
