Valdarno is a high-population garden world with a billion or more sophonts in population size and a near-ideal utopian environment conducive to most sophonts.
- Its economy and population are rapidly growing and living conditions are expected to quickly rise barring outside forces.
- It is a member of the Solomani Confederation in the Star Bridge Subsector of Aldebaran Sector.
- This is a temperate world, with a climate of pleasant, average temperatures, considered to be an ideal or near-ideal environment by many different sophont species.
- This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or above the standard for Charted Space.
- It is home to a significant community of Kwaz.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Valdarno has a solitary primary star.
- It is a red main sequence.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x9 secondary rocky worlds.
- x1 planetoid belt.
- x4 gas giants.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Valdarno has a slow rotation period: one local day is equivalent to 3.5 standard days (85 standard hours).
It orbits within the prime region of its star's habitable zone.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Valdarno is a Meso World between 12,000km and 13,500km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.8G and 1.1G. The horizon will appear about 5.1km away. Vessels with 1G of thrust should check with local starport authorities before attempting to land using emergency power.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Valdarno has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. The Thin Atmosphere does not require survival gear although it may be hard on sophonts not accustomed to it.
- It experiences generally moderate temperatures.
- High temperatures occur during the middle of the long local day.
- Temperatures fall to low levels during the middle of the long local night.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Valdarno has 65-75% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has significant large liquid bodies. Wilderness refueling is possible.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
There are eight major continents scattered remarkably evenly across the globe, but there are relatively few islands or archipelagoes.
- It is an older world with a quieter geology. There are a substantial number of relatively low, heavily eroded mountain ranges.
(Blank map, predominantly watery world.)
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Abundant native life occupying every available ecological niche. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
There are many hardy forms of indigenous plant life, some of which are carnivorous. Perhaps as a result, there are few species of animals, but those that do exist are well-adapted to dealing with the local flora.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Valdarno has its own unique culture, though it has elements garnered from Home, Euxene, and Katahdin. Colonists from Valdarno settled the world of Domino, to rimward.
During the Rim War the Confederation attempted to "relocate" a number of non-human races to other worlds, principally to fill gaps in the labor market caused by humans serving in the military. Large numbers of Kwaz were shipped to the world to assist with agricultural tasks. Their services are in demand, they have integrated relatively well, and generally they are thriving.
Solomani Security keeps a close eye on things to ensure the security of the Confederation and the well-being of its loyal citizens. Almost anyone could be a SolSec informant, passing on all sorts of useful information: some gain a reward or benefit for their actions, others are coerced, but many see it as an act of duty to help protect the Solomani state and its interests.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Valdarno has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
World Population (P)[edit]
Valdarno has a population of 6,000,000,000 sophonts (billions).
- High Population Worlds like this tend to have huge consumer markets.
- More than 99% of the population (around 5.95 billion individuals) is made up of Solomani humans.
- Less than 1% of the population (approximately 50 million individuals) consists of Kwaz.
Urbanization[edit]
Valdarno has many modern TL–12 / TL–13 cities. Each sub-nation has its own style and subculture, though they share a common planetary identity and government.
The Kwaz present on the world live in their own communities, generally built close to human settlements. Structures are constructed to serve their physiological needs and are generally far too small for humans to comfortably enter.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The most commonly heard languages are:
- Euxene French, a Terran language principally spoken in the Euxene Cluster.
- Native Kwaz languages.
- Rim Anglic, a dialect of Anglic and the principal language of the Confederation.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Valdarno possesses a Technology Level of TL–12 or TL-C in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land, Water & Air: Personal G-Tubes and advanced gravcraft.
- Space: Advanced interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-3.
World Government (G)[edit]
Valdarno is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government takes another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy, and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. This ruling bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucractic apparatus or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence, like the military.
World Law (L)[edit]
Valdarno has a high law level with laws covering many areas of interactions of people, corporations, and the government. A few worlds with this law level may be Amber Zones. Any interaction with the judicial system requires an Advocate trained in the local legal system. Law enforcement is present almost everywhere, either as people or via technology. Legal proceedings can take weeks to months to resolve and involve a dozen or more people. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (outside private residences or visiting starships).
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 3 (ordinary)
World Economy[edit]
The world is particularly known for exports of advanced electronics, "smart" materials, and specialty plant products.
- Resources: A (abundant)
- Labor: 8 (hundreds of millions)
- Infrastructure: A (extensive)
- Efficiency: +1 (average)
World Culture[edit]
- Heterogenity: A (discordant)
- Acceptance: C (xenophilic)
- Strangeness: 5 (distinct)
- Symbols: B (abstract)
