Weinberg is a moderate population, non-agricultural and preindustrial, icy vacuum world, with over a hundred million, but not yet at a billion sophonts, which warrants hazardous environment precautions.
- Its surface is ice-capped with little or no atmosphere and nearly all of its water frozen.
- It is unable to produce quality foodstuffs and must import them.
- It is a world working toward being an industrial powerhouse but lacks an adequate workforce to do so at this time. Immigration is being encouraged and promoted. This world needs workers.
- It is a member of the Solomani Confederation in the Barrens Subsector of Aldebaran Sector.
- This world is a "Twilight Zone World", a planet that is tidally-locked to its star. It has a hot side that permanently faces the star, a cold side that permanently faces away, and a narrow twilight zone in-between.
- This world has a Naval Base, usually associated with military starships.
- This world has a Military Base, usually associated with military ground forces.
- It is home to a substantial community of Taureans.
- This world controls Elation.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Weinberg has a solitary primary star.
- It is a red main sequence.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x5 secondary rocky worlds.
- x2 planetoid belts.
- x4 gas giants.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Weinberg is tidally locked to its primary star.
- The star is always high in the sky on the bright face, it hangs on horizon in the twilight zone, while the cold dark face is in permanent darkness.
- The world experiences libration - a regular wobble - as it orbits, causing the star to move in the sky.
The mainworld orbits at the outer edge of its star's habitable zone.[2]
- It receives relatively low levels of stellar energy.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Weinberg is a Small World between 2,400km and 4,000km in diameter. The world has low gravity between 0.1G and 0.17G. The horizon will appear about 2.5km away.
- It has a surface gravity of 0.40 G.
- Despite its small size, the world has a strong Magnetosphere.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Weinberg has a pressure of less than 0.001 atmospheres which requires the use of a Vacc Suit. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Weinberg has 05-15% of its surface covered by ice, either in vast sheets or contained deep within craters or fractures on the surface. Wilderness refueling is possible. Water for the inhabitants can be got by mining and melting ice.
- The surface of the world is composed of a crust of ice many kilometers thick.
- Much of the surface is cratered and covered in thick layers of regolith and dust of meteoric origin, leaving only a part of the icy outer shell exposed.
- Below the outer icy shell there may be a world-ocean of liquid water.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
The planet almost has an embarrassment of riches, with easily accessible metal ores deposited by meteorites and large ore-rich impacts easily distinguishable from orbit. Even heavy radioactives are relatively plentiful. Ice on the world is primarily found within large craters.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Weinberg was named in honor of an ancient Terran scientist associated with the original Terran invention of nuclear fission reactors.
Its economy is based around mineral extraction and initial processing. The local systems of Kolomyia and Taurea often send "bounties" to Weinberg in return for specific metal and mineral requests. The profits from trade have been used to dominate – and now control – the world of Elation
World Starport (St)[edit]
Weinberg has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
- This world is host to a Confederation Naval Base.
- This world is host to a major Military Base.
Weinberg Outbound is a relatively low-altitude highport in a polar orbit above the twilight zone. High capacity mass drivers are used to launch loads from each downport zone into its orbit for rendezvous. Outbound cargo is typically metal-ingot containers. Weinberg Inbound is a higher-altitude high port whose orbit matches the position of the local systems to allow for convenient delivery of cargo from those systems. All traffic is required to dock with Weinberg Inbound upon entering the system unless granted permission for a direct pick-up from Weinberg Outbound, reasonable diversions for gas giant refueling, or scientific endeavors.
Weinberg Leading (or "Lead") is a freight port located within the twilight zone, on the side of the planet facing towards its orbital path around the star. It has a full set of downport landing facilities, high load capacity rail connections to primary mining sites, warehousing, and business districts. As well as facilities for starships and small craft, the port contains a primary and secondary mass driver set, which propel capsules containing cargo into orbit. The capsules automatically "brake" using small thrusters as they reach the correct orbital position and are "caught" by Weinberg Outbound.
Weinberg Trailing (or "Tail") is a close twin of Lead: it is a freight port located within the twilight zone, on the side of the planet facing away from its orbital path around the star. Its structures are more densely packed than Lead, as the danger of inbound rocks is substantially less. Like Lead, it has a pair of cargo-launching mass drivers.
A Class-D Downport, Polar Control, exists at the world's northern pole and is exclusively used for civilian transport and mail deliveries. Polar Control is ringed by long-range energy weapon batteries and high-boost missile systems, part of the extensive planetary defense network.
World Population (P)[edit]
Weinberg has a population of 600,000,000 sophonts (hundreds of millions).
- More than 90% of the population (in excess of 550 million individuals) consists of Solomani humans.
- Less than 10% of the population (fewer than 50 million individuals) is made up of Taureans.
Urbanization[edit]
The ice found within craters on the surface is often quite thick, and craters with large stable ice cliffs have been mined and shaped to both provide both living space and water for the population, though more modern accommodations are typically prefabricated structures imported from Hyrcanus, in Canopus Sector. High speed monorail provides easy access to the major downports.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The most commonly heard languages are:
- Rim Anglic, a dialect of Anglic and the principal language of the Confederation.
- Taurean, the principal language of the Taureans.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Weinberg possesses a Technology Level of TL–11 or TL-B in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land, Water & Air: Personal G-Tubes and advanced gravcraft.
- Space: Advanced interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-2.
World Government (G)[edit]
Weinberg is governed by a Feudal Technocracy. Society divides itself based on the technical requirements of the society. Each of these functions are granted as a fief to an individual or group. Leadership of these fiefs determines the head of the government.
There are 25 regional ministers on the dark face and 40 regional ministers on the bright face. Ministerships have a 20-year term, with new Ministers being appointed by the outgoing Minister after a period of apprenticeship. On rare occasion, a Prime Minister has overridden an appointment, even insisting on the outgoing Minister remain in office.
Prime Ministers have a 5 year term and are chosen by Ministerial vote from a slate of the top 5 ministers based on their performance and record, profit and loss statements, and their governmental contributions to their employee base, particularly it's more menial members. Prime Minister elections are timed such that a Prime Minister is elected 2 years after the Ministerial election cycle. The Remaining PM usually has his or her Ministership assumed by their Apprentice Minister during that time, thus ruling as a lame duck (an ancient Terran political term).
The current Prime Minister is Arthur Harragdin, third of his line, of Region South 3.
- Within Region South 3, Apprentice Minister Sonya Harragdin stands in his place.
World Military[edit]
Weinberg Patrol is a large and pervasive organization that patrols for safety violations. Originally, it seems, they focused on air leaks and equipment failures, before evolving into a preemptive law enforcement agency. Special Weapons Division acts as the military arm of the Patrol. The Patrol also has specialist Divisions who act as first responders in the cases of disasters.
Given the strategic value of Weinberg, the Solomani Conferation maintains both a Naval and Marine Military base within the system. Weinberg Military Base is located in mountainous region just outside the icepack toward Trailing Downport. Weinberg Naval Station is 5 degrees trailing in its orbit. The bases are connected by high-bandwidth line-of-sight communications.
World Law (L)[edit]
Weinberg has an extreme law level which covers every area of interaction. Laws are complex, detailed, and difficult to understand. Every interaction with the government requires an Advocate. Law enforcement is omnipresent and strict. Legal proceeding can take months to years to resolve and may involve dozens of people. A few worlds with this law level may be a Red Zone and others will be an Amber Zone. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (with no exception for private residences; visiting starships are only protected so long as they stay within designated starports and approach corridors).
Strict laws regarding airlock usage, atmospheric integrity measures, and equipment maintenance are in place, primarily as a result of a series of fatal but preventable accidents. Given the relatively high population of Weinberg and limited organic resources, there are equally strict laws around food, air, water, recycling, and internal ecology. "Waste will get you wasted" was one well-remembered public service announcement. A scrolling list of deceased violators was also present.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 3 (ordinary)
World Economy[edit]
Metal ingots and metal powders are the primary export: prices are inexpensive to cheap compared to recent Imperial prices. Imports include food, soil, hydroponics equipment, and media and entertainment including digitized literature. Most of the world's imports are standing orders, while other materials are brought in "on spec" by small traders hoping to turn a large profit.
Weinberg natives also will issue their own trade bounties for specific materials to local worlds.
- Resources: F (extremely abundant)
- Labor: 7 (tens of millions)
