Carthame is a low-population world with a population of less than 10,000 sophonts in size.
- This world has yet to take off economically or otherwise and the population remains low for reasons largely unknown.
- It is a part of the Third Reformed French Confederate Republic, a member state of the Solomani Confederation, located in the Euxene Subsector of Aldebaran Sector.
- It is a member of the Carthame Cluster.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Carthame has a solitary primary star.
- It is a yellow main sequence.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x8 secondary rocky worlds.
- x3 planetoid belts.
- x1 gas giant.
System Data[edit]
The Carthame system is a young and somewhat chaotic system.
The primary is a G3 spectral class star about 2.5 billion years of age.
There is a large gas giant approximately 12AU from the primary. The Carthamians have named it Napolean, a reference to an ancient Terran hero.
There are a total of 3 distinct belts in this system.
- Inner Belt: 1.5 - 2.5AU, high metal content
- Outer Belt: 18 - 25 AU, standard contents
- Oblique Belt: 100-125AU at a 80 degree angle to the common ecliptic plane, small debris, mostly metal. Navigation hazard.
Mainworld Data[edit]
The Carthame main world is a standard sized rocky planet, on the warmer side of the habitable zone.
The main area of habitation lies in a narrow river valley between 2 high mountain ranges. There appear to have been several large meteor impacts to each side of the valley, so apparently this location was chosen strategically. Certainly, this new system's high population of plantoids combined with the planet's thin atmosphere makes impacts significantly more frequent.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
The Carthame main world is a standard sized rocky planet, with an average diameter of 10300km.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Carthame has a pressure of 0.10 to 0.42 atmospheres. The very thin pressures require a respirator or Oxygen Mask. TL–5 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
It has small ice caps, and some large bodies of water, qualifying for a 40% hydrosphere rating. The thin atmosphere does hold enough moisture to provide cloud formations and some precipitation, but the local solar wind seems to be removing significant water mass over time.
Mainworld Geography & Topography[edit]
A relatively young, rocky world with active plate tectonics and vulcanism. There are several high mountain ranges.

World Starport (Sp)[edit]
Carthame has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
Carthame Port de Esprit is a typical, basic quality landing port located 2 kilometers from a small startown, Esprit.
According to the (translated) dedication plaque, it was created as a gift from the people of Euxene 50 years ago.
Refined fuel and basic repair facilities are available, though some element of barter seems to be expected as part of any transaction.
World Population (P)[edit]
Approximate population is 2,000 sophonts.
World Demographics[edit]
Humaniti, population 100%
World Government (G)[edit]
Carthame has no central government or substantial government apparatus; an Anarchy. The largest governmental structure would be a family, tribe, or single clan. The largest group will be between 50 and 100 individuals, and there may be dozens to hundreds of them. This governmental structure can be stable over long periods of time if the population remains small or geographically separated.
World Law Level (L)[edit]
Law level is low, with a rating of 3. Military heavy weapons and autorifles are prohibited.
World Technology Level (TL)[edit]
Carthame possesses a Technology Level of TL–11 or TL-B in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land, Water & Air: Personal G-Tubes and advanced gravcraft.
- Space: Advanced interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-2.
World Military[edit]
The downport houses an older SDB, proudly called "La Poisson", which seems in reasonably good repair by the family Mouchotte.
World Economy[edit]
No information yet available.
Trade Data[edit]
No information yet available.
Urbanization[edit]
A handful of villages contain a little over half the population, with the remainder spread out as small homesteads.
- Esprit (startown)
- Paris (pron. Pair-ee)
- Nice (pron. Neese)
These villages each have a single fusion reactor, with the Esprit reactor being the newest. Homesteads seem to rely on high-efficiency solar fields and fuel cells.
World Infrastructure[edit]
Carthame possesses negligible infrastructure.
Carthame is an anarchic society with no central government to create shared infrastructure.
World Culture[edit]
Carthamian society is descended from several separate groups of colonists wishing to maintain a new, pure French world.
Cathame French is the common language, a patois evolved from original Terran French dialects. It is spoken in the homes of most colonists, with Anglic and Vilani taught from archives and books as a second language. Various elements of Terran French culture from the Europe region have been kept, particular in baking and cooking, as well as ancient media recordings that are displayed during festivals.
Generally, the people of Carthame are polite if distant, and are very much dedicated to their preserved culture. The language barrier is certainly an issue, unless one can find a native translator. It may be possible acquire or develop appropriate translation software, but this method of communication seems to incense some natives.
Observation of a local funeral revealed that the dead are entombed in a a series of maze-like "catacombs" in the nearby rock face.
