Theta Borealis style="width: 250px; height: 350px; border: solid 1px black; float: right; clear: left"

Theta Borealis Sector lies far to spinward of the Third Imperium. It is a region of Balkanized Space that has been inhabited for millennia.

  • It is part of Charted Space.
  • It is named for Theta Borealis, a supergiant star lying close to its center and visible across the region.
  • The occasional Zhodani, Aslan, or Imperial trader ventures to its rich, exotic worlds, eager to make themselves a fortune.

Description (Specifications)

Theta Borealis Sector is a relatively densely populated sector in a largely empty region of space.

  • It is a remote, isolated, inward-looking area surrounded by wide rifts.
  • Though it has a large human population it is dominated by non-human sophonts.
  • The resources of the sector are being exploited.

Astrographic Features & Trade Routes

The following astrographic and commercial data regarding the sector has been determined:

The sector was initially surveyed during the Imperial First Survey.

  • First Survey primary data on the sector was very fragmented.

The sector was extensively surveyed during the Imperial Second Survey.

  • A few IISS personnel, based at Pautho, were able to personally gather limited amounts of data at great personal risk.
We salute their valor and honor the fallen.
  • Much of the updated data relating to the sector was based on remote long-term observations done over approximately 70 years (from 995 to 1065).
  • Most of the output from these observations was automatically collated and generated and may occasionally contain errors.

Stellar Distribution

A basic map showing the distribution and size of stars within Theta Borealis Sector.

  • The color corresponds to the visible color of the star, which links to its spectral classification.
  • The size as shown indicates both the physical size of the object and its relative brightness.

Note that the stars as depicted are representative. Any star, no matter what its size, is a mere speck within the hex it occupies.

  • Ordinary main sequence stars can barely be seen from even a hex away.
  • Huge, intensely luminous giant stars can be seen from across the sector and far beyond.

Rifts & Voids

A simple chart showing rift regions within Theta Borealis Sector.

The highest tech level commonly encountered out This Far Along (spinward of the Third Imperium) is TL–12, though a few worlds are more advanced.

The various rift regions within the sector have been named.

The rimward edge of the sector lies adjacent to the Great Rift, the great expanse of empty space dividing the Imperial core from those regions lying "Behind the Claw".

The Idella Rift

The scattered rift regions that lie within Theta Borealis Sector are part of a huge complex of rifts and voids running generally parallel to the coreward edge of the Great Rift.

Borealis Group

Theta Borealis Sector is dominated by the Borealis Group, a very large cluster of stars containing an unusually high number of stellar giants.

Significant Stars
The brightest stars in the group are called the Borealean Stars. They include:

The major stars of the cluster are surrounded by more than sixty other giant and subgiant stars, some almost as bright as the named giants, as well as numerous main sequence stars and white dwarfs.

  • The cluster has higher than normal concentrations of gas and dust within it, largely consisting of material thrown off by the stars.
  • This gas and dust reflects the intense light of the stars and gives the vast feature a diffuse glow.

The skies within the region are spectacular. Some of the brighter stars can be seen from the surfaces of worlds during daylight hours.

Theta Borealis Bright Stars 2.jpg

Many of the stars are active objects, experiencing violent flare activity and producing a lot of EM noise across the spectrum.

  • The background interference is significant - sensor operations and communications can be seriously hampered by signals originating parsecs away.
    • Levels of interference vary periodically.
  • Areas of the cluster may contain clouds of matter thrown off by stellar activity.
  • Radiation Levels may be significantly raised on worlds within the cluster.

Many of these gigantic, turbulent stars are destinations on the Korsumug Main.

Uncharted Anomaly

The "Enigma of Theta Borealis" [1] is a mysterious astrographic feature.

Non-industrial and low population worlds are rarely able to undertake manufacturing.

Jaibok Raiders

Jaibok raiders pose a considerable risk to interstellar trade and commerce within the sector.

Jaibok Ship Image.jpg

Raiders may be individual opportunists, part of an organised private venture, or operating as part of the Imperial Korsumug Navy.

Trade Routes

A number of trade routes exist within this area. Of these, the most important are:

Korsumug Main

(Chart sourced from Traveller Map)

The Korsumug Main, the great chain of Jump-1 systems linking Astron Sector, Theta Borealis Sector, and Mavuzog Sector, runs through the region.

A simple chart showing parts of Mavuzog Sector, Theta Borealis Sector, Chiep Zhez Sector, and Astron Sector, and the Korsumug Main running between them, is shown right:

Korsumug Gate

The Korsumug Gate is the name given to the coreward part of the Korsumug Main.

  • The area is a natural choke point.
  • The Main forms the only easily navigable route between the empty expanses of the Thetan Rift and the Thetan Void.

Theta Borealis Jump Hubs

(Chart sourced from Traveller Map)

Three Calibration Points (deep space refuelling points, locally referred to as Jump Hubs) are located within Theta Borealis Sector:

These Hubs are corporate-operated and not generally accessible to non-corporate personnel or vessels.

Hexes are extremely large, in the region of 3.2 lightyears / 170 light weeks across.

  • Without exact coordinates to jump to within it, any ship arriving randomly within the hex is likely to end up many tens of light-weeks away from the Calibration Point.

Nomad Ports

Large tanker vessels occasionally pair with commercial tenders, vessels equipped to carry out field maintenance and repairs on smaller craft. These two vessels, working together, can temporarily provide some equivalence to Class B starport facilities on frontier worlds. Such outfits are usually escorted by one or more Starmerc warships, such as fast gunboats or armored escorts.

  • The Nomad Port moves from system to system, usually working to an established itinerary.
  • The arrival of a Nomad Port is often timed to coincide with a harvest or a local festival, when in-system traffic is likely to be higher.
  • Well equipped private security forces are usually retained.

Aslan Exploration Route

(Chart sourced from Traveller Map)

The Aslan may have established an exploration route along the coreward edge of the Great Rift, bypassing the heavily populated and potentially hostile Human dominated worlds of Theta Borealis Sector.

A simple map showing the likely Aslan exploration route along the Great Rift to the rimward part of Mavuzog Sector, right:

  • Rift regions are shown in blue.
  • Known Aslan outposts and settlements are ringed in red.
  • Collaborating Human worlds are ringed in green.

Aslan would likely use the route to communicate with and supply their explorers, pioneers, and scattered outposts within the region.

  • The existence of the route and the fuel caches has not been definitively proven.

History & Background (Dossier)

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

Early History

The Ancients are known to have been active in the sector -- the presence of the Attorn, a Minor Human Race native to the sector, being considered irrefutable proof. A few remains, ruins, and even advanced artifacts have been found, all seemingly dating to more than a quarter of a million years ago. Between those distant times and the "modern" era (the beginning of the Vilani Imperium onwards) there are no indications that any sophonts were active at an interstellar level within the region.

  • The Vilani discovered jump technology in -9235 but ceased exploration and closed their borders long before any explorers ventured close to Theta Borealis.
  • The Zhodani discovered jump technology in -5415. It is quite likely that a few of their vessels passed through the sector, though they have left no discernible trace.

The first Humans (other than the Attorn) to definitely enter the region were rugged Terran explorers and pioneers, equipped with their still-new FTL drive technology and eager to open up a distant frontier.

Surviving records indicate that the very first Terrans had entered the sector by around the end of the First Interstellar War, in -2396.

In under four decades a few adventurous Terrans had travelled many hundreds of parsecs from their homeworld, first heading coreward, somehow managing to cross the entire First Imperium and avoiding the emerging peril of raiding Vargr, finding the path across the Great Rift through Corridor Sector, before pushing on to spinward, into the vast rift-filled wilderness Behind the Claw. While fragmentary records of their journeys survive, for the most part these early pioneers left few physical traces on the worlds they visited.

The Korsumug Empire

(Chart sourced from Traveller Map)

The technologically sophisticated Jansa, a species native to Jansazar in Mavuzog Sector, acquired knowledge of jump technology from these first far-flung Human travellers. By the middle years of the -2300s they had constructed at least one operational FTL vessel, the first species native to the region to have independent jump capability.

  • The Jansa slowly explored their local area and discovered the Jaibok of Vech. Evidence suggests Human explorers had contacted the Jaibok around a decade earlier, but didn't survive the experience. A sudden improvement in Jansa technology at this time may indicate that they were able to retrieve and reverse-engineer more advanced human tech from the Jaibok homeworld.
  • First contact between the Jansa and the Jaibok is considered to be the beginning of the Korsumug Empire.

The Korsumug Empire has risen, grown, fractured, collapsed, and entirely disappeared multiple times since its first appearance, around 3500 years ago. The Jansa and the Jaibok consider their empire to have endured for the whole of that vast period of time, even though most others do not.

The current incarnation of the Korsumug Empire emerged in the late 500s, largely within the central part of Mavuzog Sector. Unlike previous manifestations of the state the Jansa have taken a more proactive role within its structure, building large warships and using them to enforce a degree of stability on the state. While the Empire has experienced internal conflict and multiple civil wars, so far it has not suffered the catastrophic internal strife that has ended its predecessors -- in fact, particularly over the last century, the Empire has had fitful bursts of expansion that have gained it huge new territories.

Human Settlement

Worlds considered historical colonies are highlighted in dark red. (Chart sourced from Traveller Map)

Terran Humans began arriving in Theta Borealis Sector in greater numbers during the time of the Interstellar Wars and the Rule of Man, particularly after the discovery of Jump-3 drives. They were drawn by the tales of the earliest explorers, who painted a rosy picture of distant, unpopulated, resource-rich worlds far from the oppressive control of any interstellar state, and they had the beacon of Theta Borealis to guide them there. By the -1900s there were scattered Human settlements across the sector and beyond.

This trickle of Humaniti slowed and then stopped during the Long Night. As the Night deepened interstellar travel within the region effectively ceased and many worlds became barren. Some worlds within the sector, however, flourished during this period, particularly those within its trailing and rimward parts. As new waves of immigration entered the region towards the end of the Long Night, these long-established worlds became the settler's preferred destination, offering them either a chance to repair and re-equip before setting off beyond the frontier, or for many a new home and a new start. Later the region became known as the Verstand-Jugartha Colonies

A simple map of the Verstand-Jugartha Colonies region, right:

Towards the end of the Long Night these far off, half-remembered, mythically idyllic worlds served as the focus for waves of settlers originating in what later became the Imperial core. They had gained access to Sylean jump technology, they were seeking empty worlds of their own, and were prepared to undertake the long and dangerous journey to the island of civilization they believed existed far to spinward.

In the Year 0, far to trailing, the Third Imperium was founded. From the 100s onward, small groups of Humans began to move through the region, many fleeing the perceived oppression of Imperial rule, and spreading their improved technology and re-establishing the routine use of jump drives as they did so. Later waves of arrivals found that their destination was fairly heavily settled and so carried on to spinward, seeking other empty but habitable worlds within the region that they could claim. This slow trickle of Humaniti had effectively ceased by the end of the third century, largely due to the emergence of polities (and hostilities) in the sectors Behind the Claw. By the beginning of the twelth century some of these outposts had grown into heavily populated worlds with distinctive cultures of their own.

Minor States

Various minor polities have risen and fallen within the region over the centuries.

Chart Kingdom of Peladon Basic.png Chart Percavid Marches Basic.png Chart Trooles Confederation Basic.png

Of those that are currently extant the Kingdom of Peladon is the oldest, having existed in its current form since the 600s. The Jelmiri Marches gradually came into being in the 900s and the charter creating the Trooles Confederation was signed in the 1040s. All three of the states formed as a response to ongoing Korsumug expansion and atrocities, with the date of their formation corresponding to their relative proximity to the Korsumug Empire. The Empire attacked and conquered the Marches at the beginning of the twelth century, occupying it and renaming it the Percavid Marches.
