Mandau is a ring of many small worldlets (planetoids AKA an "asteroid belt"), not capable of retaining an atmosphere or water, and nonindustrial in nature.

  • These worldlets warrant hazardous environment precautions.
  • Life in a vacuum requires great discipline. After all, it only takes one forgotten seal on a vacuum suit to spell death. Those who survive tend to be very methodically-minded and attentive to small detail.
  • The worldlets require extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Sibigil Subsector of Theta Borealis Sector.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

Mandau is a binary star system.

  • The primary is a yellow main sequence.
  • The secondary is a red main sequence.

System Data[edit]

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

Mainworld Data[edit]

Mandau is an Asteroid Belt mainworld.

Asteroid Belt 03a.jpg

The belt orbits within the star's Habitable Zone.

  • It lies within the zones colder outer H- region.
  • It receives lower levels of stellar energy.

Chart H- Region As Mw.png

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Mandau is an Asteroid Belt consisting of a few very large objects with diameters of hundreds of kilometers, thousands of bodies of a few kilometers in diameter, and millions of smaller objects.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

None of the bodies within the Mandau belt retain an atmosphere.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

The Mandau belt contains a few icy bodies. A few belt objects have frozen volatiles on their surfaces.

  • Wilderness refueling is possible within the belt, provided a suitable icy object can be found.
  • Water for the inhabitants is generally imported and is extensively recycled.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

No centrally held chart of the belt exists within AAB Library Data records.

  • Locally, detailed maps may be available.
  • Verified updated charts are constantly sought.
  • Detailed survey data commands premium prices.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

Mandau is a growing commercial outpost with some degree of development. It is an important hub for Baylor-Ator Lines.

  • It has been home to a small community of belters for centuries.
  • The resources of the system are being exploited.

A number of organizations and private interests are active within the system.

  • Commercial traffic is fairly frequent: ships regularly arrive and depart.
  • Commo regularly picks up signals and private chatter. Communications are in Riftian Anglic.
  • Multiple commercial navigation beacons will be active.
  • One or two vessels may be operating among the other worlds and moons that make up the system.

Note that social data, though only 40 years old, may be out of date.

  • Verified updated data is constantly sought.

World Starport (St)[edit]

Mandau has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World Population (P)[edit]

Mandau has a population of 700,000 sophonts (hundreds of thousands).

  • This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.

Urbanization[edit]

Cities are tunnelled into large rocky planetoids.

  • Each has its own starport.
  • Smaller facilities exist on other rocky bodies.
  • Structures and facilities are sealed.

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Mandau possesses a Technology Level of TL–11 or TL-B in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Government (G)[edit]

Mandau has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.

World Military[edit]

Approximately 3000 personnel.

  • Each planetoid-state maintains its own standing army.

World Law (L)[edit]

Mandau has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. All firearms except shotguns, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

Trade Data[edit]

  • Importance: 1 (ordinary)

Baylor-Ator Lines maintains large corporate holdings within the system.

World Economy[edit]

  • Resources: B (abundant)
  • Labor: 4 (tens of thousands)
  • Infrastructure: 5 (limited)
  • Efficiency: +1 (average)

World Culture[edit]

  • Homogeneity: 4 (harmonious)
  • Acceptance: 6 (aloof)
  • Strangeness: 4 (somewhat distinct)
  • Symbols: A (abstract)
