Kathol is an industrial, high-population hellworld with a billion or more sophonts, who struggle in an inhospitable environment.
- Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often develop intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
- As an industrial world, this planet has well-developed manufacturing and processing industries. Manufactured goods are a major export item.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Festab Subsector of Theta Borealis Sector.
- This is a cold world with an overall climate that is at the lower temperature range of human-congruous sophont endurance.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Kathol has a solitary primary star.
- It is a blue-white subgiant.

It periodically produces bursts of intense EM noise.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x7 secondary rocky worlds.
- x3 planetoid belt.
Mainworld Data[edit]
The mainworld orbits within the star's Habitable Zone.
- It lies within the zone's colder outer H- region.
- It receives relatively low levels of stellar energy.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Kathol is a Meso World between 10,400km and 12,000km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.7G and 0.9G. The horizon will appear about 4.7km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Kathol has an Exotic Atmosphere and possesses an unusual gas mix which requires the use of oxygen tanks. Additionally, protective suits, while not necessary, are recommended. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
- It experiences low temperatures.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Kathol has no free-standing water or ice on the surface. What little water or ice exists is heavily tainted with other substances, which makes it dangerous, corrosive, or toxic. Wilderness refueling isn't possible on this world. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are Hell Worlds.
Satellites[edit]
Kathol does not retain any moons.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Exotic native life occupying a few specialist ecological niches. Its metabolic functions help drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
- Native lifeforms are cryophilic - they thrive in low temperatures.
- They will rapidly die in environmental conditions suitable for humans.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
This world is served by Continental Lines, a major shipping corporation in Human-controlled parts of Theta Borealis Sector.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Kathol has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World Population (P)[edit]
Kathol has a population of 6,000,000,000 sophonts (billions).
- High Population Worlds like this tend to have huge consumer markets.
Urbanization[edit]
A single vast metropolis is home to the entire population.
- Structures and facilities are sealed against local environmental conditions.
- Most of the surface of the world remains as wilderness.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Kathol possesses a Technology Level of TL–8.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics, improved telephones, and satellite communication and data networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Improved geothermal and improved batteries.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Advanced automobiles.
- Water: Triphibians and early artificial gills.
- Air: Improved helicopters and hypersonic jets.
- Space: Space shuttles, early space stations, and improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
World Government (G)[edit]
Kathol has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.
- Regions of the world's single sprawling multi-layered city are ruled by different factions and powers.
World Military[edit]
Approximately 200 million personnel, divided between different city power blocs.
World Law (L)[edit]
Kathol has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Personal concealable firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.
World Economy[edit]
- Resources: E (extremely abundant)
- Labor: 8 (hundreds of millions)
- Infrastructure: A (extensive)
- Efficiency: -1 (average)
Kathol is serviced by Continental Lines shipping.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 0 (unimportant)
World Culture[edit]
- Homogeneity: 7 (discordant)
- Acceptance: A (very friendly)
- Strangeness: 3 (somewhat typical)
- Symbols: 6 (somewhat concrete)
World Timeline[edit]
The following major events have affected this world and the wider region it lies within:
- 300-420: The First Survey charts the system.
- 995-1065: The Second Survey charts the system.
- 1065: The Second Survey is published.
