Far Frontiers Sector is a region of balkanized space within the Zhodani sphere of influence.
- It is part of Charted Space.
- It is considered part of the Rimward Fringe.
- Its coreward regions are part of the Zhodani Province of Iadr Nsobl.
- It is also known as Afachtiabr Sector.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
The Far Frontiers is a tumultuous border area, as the Terrans would describe it -- a region of shifting political allegiances lying directly to rimward of the enigmatic Zhodani and dotted with numerous pocket empires and client states, though their allegiances are often hard to tell apart. The Consulate maintains powerful military forces within the region, easily capable of conquering the area, though it never has. Some speculate that they are satisfied with the status quo, a roiling morass of petty pocket empires endlessly squabbling among themselves and too fractured to ever present a serious threat. The region is also known for a plethora of mysterious ruins, including Ancients Sites, that attract xeno-archaeologists from across Charted Space.
- The Zhodani appear relatively disinterested in the sector.
- The resources of the sector are being heavily exploited.
The first modern interstellar explorers within the region were the Zhodani.
- Substantial evidence of Ancients activity exists within the sector.
- Vilani and Solomani explorers and pioneers have crossed the sector since the time of the Ziru Sirka and the Rule of Man.
- The near-mythical Sky Raiders emerged within the region.
Imperial data on the sector was initially gathered during the First Survey.
- First Survey primary data regarding the sector was very fragmented.
- The data drew heavily on the records and accounts of previous explorers within the region.
- The data from this period is known to contain a number of significant errors.
The sector was further surveyed by the Imperium during the Second Survey.
- IISS staff from the Spinward Marches and a few IISS personnel based at Pautho, in Theta Borealis Sector, were able to personally gather
limited amounts of data at great personal risk.
We salute their valor and honor the fallen. - Much of the current data relating to the sector was based on remote long-term observations done over approximately 70 years (from 995 to 1065).
- Most of the output from these observations was automatically collated and generated.
Astrographic Features & Trade Routes[edit]
The following astrographic and commercial data regarding the sector has been determined:
Summary[edit]
Stellar Distribution[edit]
A basic map showing the distribution and size of stars within Far Frontiers Sector is shown right.
- The color corresponds to the visible color of the star, which links to its spectral classification.
- The size as shown indicates both the physical size of the object and its relative brightness.
Note that the stars as depicted are representative. Any star, no matter what its size, is a mere speck within the hex it occupies.
- Ordinary main sequence stars can barely be seen from even a hex away.
- Huge, intensely luminous giant stars can be seen from across the sector and far beyond.
Black Hole[edit]
A black hole object, designated FARF-BH2526, lies within the sector. It is the remnant of a giant star that went nova millennia ago.
- It has a mass of about 5 solar masses and a diameter of around 5500 meters.
- It is invisible to the naked eye.
- It is the central object of the Shadowsand system.
Borealis Group[edit]
The spinward-rimward skies of the sector are lit by the Borealis Group, a very large cluster of stars containing an unusually high number of stellar giants.
- It primarily lies within Theta Borealis Sector, around 100 parsecs away.
- It is an astrographic feature visible across the whole of Charted Space.
- It is centered on the supergiant star Theta Borealis.
The stars of the Group are surrounded by more than sixty other giant and subgiant stars, some almost as bright as the named giants, as well as numerous main-sequence stars and white dwarfs.
- The Borealis Group contains significant amounts of gas and dust that reflects and refracts the light of the stars, giving it an ethereal glow.
Raider's Blight[edit]
The Raider's Blight is a historical and astropolitical region within the coreward half of Far Frontiers Sector. Thousands of years ago, the region was the center of the Sky Raiders culture -- the Zhodani ended Sky Raider dominance within the area and have prevented interstellar states from forming within it ever since. The Blight, the "ghost" of the Sky Raider region, remains as a characteristic dent in the Consulate's rimward border.
Groups within the Raider's Blight region walk a fine line between what the Zhodani will tolerate, and what they will not.
Tildeh, the homeworld of the Ne Kraeda ren Kelva, a minor human race, lies within the Blight. The Kelva maintain a cultural region with a grand title -- the Kelvara Empire.
- While the Kelva make many bombastic claims and boasts, they are careful not to formalize the cultural region as a state and risk Zhodani ire.
The pro-Imperial Protectorate have been courting worlds as client states along the rimward edge of the Blight, expanding their influence within the region.
- A number of worlds have emerged as pro-Zhodani in response, some even attaining Consulate client state status.
Economic Astrography[edit]
Zhodani Shadow[edit]
The Zhodani Shadow is a term given to a roughly twenty parsec deep social and economic zone around the Zhodani Consulate's rimward borders. Far Frontiers Sector lies solidly within it.
- Worlds within this somewhat nebulous region tend to be heavily influenced by Zhodani culture and sophistication. Many use Zdetl as their primary language.
- The Consulate use this influence to their advantage, pulling the strings of minor powers and conducting none-too-subtle military and intel activities within these border regions. In the Far Frontiers, the Third Imperium contests this influence, and engages in similar actions through its local client states.
- Opponents of the Zhodani refer to the Consulate and its activities as Perfidious Zhodane.
Corporations[edit]
Zhodani Corporations[edit]
Logistics
Priantqlovr Drafr: A Zhodani megacorporation that dominates transport and passenger services within the rimward provinces of the Zhodani Consulate. It is owned by a Zhodani Noble family, but enjoys a permanent military subsidy as a reserve arm of the Zhodani Navy. The majority of its large commercial transport vessels are built by the Tliazhashal corporation, while many of its luxury liners are constructed in Tanzhrtl Zofrtia yards.
- Its ships are armed and can be called up or requisitioned by the Navy when needed.
Heavy Industry
Bonzhtlensh Chezzhdiakl: A corporation specializing in heavy industry. It is particularly noted for the manufacture of power plants, infrastruture elements, and major starship components such as jump drives. The company has an ongoing commercial rivalry with the industrial giant Tliazhashal.
- It operates facilities on industrial worlds across the region.
Tliazhashal: A corporation involved in a wide range of heavy industry and starship manufacturing, chiefly producing enormous commercial vessels and capital warships. Tliazhashal's Survey Division performs, under Consular contract, routine astrographical surveys of space within and near to Zhodani territory. It has a long-standing commercial rivalry with the corporation Bonzhtlensh Chezzhdiakl. It produces the majority of the huge bulk freighters used by the logistics corporation Priantqlovr Drafr.
- It operates facilities on industrial worlds across the region.
- It has shipyards at a number of Class A Starports within the Zhodani-controlled parts of the sector.
Shipbuilding
Chiata: A specialist manufacturer of jump drives and other starship components. It produces custom luxury vessels. Chiata is also involved in banking and finance.
- It has exclusive shipyards at a few high technology Class A Starports within the Zhodani-controlled parts of the sector.
Makarin: A major producer of starships and smallcraft, particularly smaller classes of military and paramilitary vessels. The business has been losing some of its share of the market to Tanzhrtl Zofrtia, which has recently started manufacturing military ships.
- It has shipyards at a number of Class A Starports within the Zhodani-controlled parts of the sector.
Tanzhrtl Zofrtia: A major producer of starships and smallcraft, primarily operating within the civilian market. They are noted for the excellent attention to internal ergonomics, particularly in their classes of Liners. The company has recently begun producing small military vessels such as patrol craft, bringing it into competition with Makarin.
- It has shipyards at a number of Class A and Class B Starports within the Zhodani-controlled parts of the sector.
Manufacturing
Biafrchtev: A producer of a huge range of consumer goods, including tools, furniture, clothing, civilian and commercial vehicles, computers, and communications equipment.
- It manufactures high quality electronic systems for the Zhodani Navy.
Chiadle: The corporation is a major industrial combine, noted for its rugged agricultural machinery and excellent robots. It is a major manufacturer of the utility vehicles and armored personnel carriers used by the Consular armed forces.
- It is a leading producer of Warbots.
Independent Corporations[edit]
A number of independent corporations operate within the sector, including:
- Allarton Corporation: formed in 941 to exploit and develop the non-aligned areas of the Trelyn Subsector of the Vanguard Reaches. To comply with the terms of its still-valid Imperial charter it theoretically only operates within that area. It conducts operations beyond the borders of Trelyn Subsector via its subsidiaries.
- Artesian Company: a wholly owned subsidiary of the Allarton Corporation, acting on its parent organization's behalf within Far Frontiers Sector as well as undertaking private ventures of its own. It is based at Yster and controls a number of its own subsidiaries.
- Pan-Melesien Company: a wholly owned subsidiary of the Allarton Corporation, acting on its parent organization's behalf within the Vanguard Reaches as well as undertaking private ventures of its own. It controls a number of its own subsidiaries.
- Cohaine Futures, Inc: The largest non-Zhodani corporation in the Far Frontiers Sector, CFI specializes in communication systems and financing, supplying computer systems for planetary and personal use within the sector. CFI is also involved in high level research and development projects in artificial intelligence, and terraforming operations for colonization projects, for example in the Inverness Subsector. CFI is opposed to Imperial-favored Genem, Inc. CFI is owned and controlled exclusively by a noble family, the Cohaine.
- Faraday Engineers: A mining and construction company, with equipment and technical advisers on over 50 planets. The Engineers are renowned for their training schools and their almost monastic devotion to maintaining whatever machinery they are assigned to. Some pious Engineers take life assignments on frontier worlds to supervise the introduction of higher grade technologies.
- Freedonian Aeronautics and Space Administration (FASA): A well-known designer and builder of many classes of vessels across Charted Space.
- Frontiers Developments: Involved in resource processing and freight.
- Genem: The oldest known non-Zhodani corporation still active in the sector, Genem is primarily interested in transportation and colonization. It is also a major weapons technology supplier in the sector, outfitting all branches of local armed forces.
- Kalaman Enterprises: Engaged in all manner of activity, from legitimate merchant ventures to smuggling and even piracy. Though not a large company, it commands great respect and fear; a reputation for mishaps befalling those who cause trouble for its CEO has protected him.
- Llewellyn-Norris: a corporation operating out of Vanguard Reaches Sector that specializes in the production of non-lethal and covert weapons of all kinds.
- Qwuim Bosak: A sector-wide textiles and chemical firm, with subsidiary concerns in pharmaceutical and medical research equipment. The Bosaki own this concern as a group, and see to its management closely, never trusting outsiders to handle their equipment directly.
Research Stations[edit]
A number of Research Stations are located within the sector:
- Research Station Alpha, within Cabala Subsector.
- Research Station Beta, within Mnemosyne Subsector.
- Research Station Gamma, within Wulfek Subsector.

Verified updated data is constantly sought.
- Scouting missions gathering reliable, verified data can receive substantial payment.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
The coreward reach of the sector is part of the Zhodani Consulate, in the Province of Iadr Nsobl. The rest of the sector is Zhodani-influenced, but the attention of the Consulate's nobles has long been on the Core Expeditions or on productive trade opportunities with Vargr and others to trailing; as a result, the Zhodani didn't see fit to claim the whole sector, and now the Consulate is static in its official borders.

Settlement Patterns[edit]
Earliest Settlement[edit]
Around -6000 the Vlazhdumecta, a minor human race native to an unknown world in Far Frontiers, were contacted by the Zhodani and gained jump technology. They established a Colonisation Sphere and settled multiple worlds, including some in Yiklerzdanzh Sector. The Zhodani, in keeping with their policy of absorbing smaller states, gradually dismantled the Sphere by a variety of processes, including espionage, hampering trade, and social manipulation. By around -4900 the Colonisation Sphere had collapsed.
- Estimates vary, but as many as 10% of the worlds in Far Frontiers had Vlazhdumecta settlements or outposts.
A very few Vilani explorers and pioneers entered the sector from around -5200 onward, following the Vilani discovery of jump-2 drives. Many carried on further to spinward, but some settled within Far Frontiers. They left records of their journeys but very few discernible physical traces of them remain. Genetic evidence suggests they found the Vlazhdumecta welcoming.
- This trickle of wandering Vilani -- perhaps only a few hundred in any given century -- continued for over three thousand years.
By around -4800 a few worlds along the coreward edge of the sector had small Zhodani outposts, present to monitor ongoing activity within the region.
Sky Raiders and Terrans[edit]
The Sky Raider culture arose circa -4200, occupying a number of worlds in the center of the sector. They are widely believed to be the Loeskalth of Gushemege Sector but the truth behind them remains an enduring mystery.
- Sky Raiders are believed to have taken large numbers of Vlazhdumecta as prisoners and slaves, using them to establish bases and outposts on a number of worlds.
- Vlazhdumecta settlements and Zhodani outposts were pillaged or occupied by Sky Raiders.
By around -4000 the Zhodani had ended Sky Raider dominance. From this point onwards the Consulate maintained naval facilities within the region and policed the Raider's Blight.
- Small settlements grew up to support -- and exploit -- these ongoing Zhodani military operations.
During the -2900s the Vlazhdumecta were resurgent, founding the Zhupek Shirkaa and settling a number of worlds within the sector. The Zhodani quickly suppressed the state but traded with inhabited worlds.
From around -2200 Terrans of the Rule of Man, driven by the spirit of exploration, retraced the paths of earlier Vilani pioneers, some even settling within the region. Despite their greater numbers, like the Vilani before them they left relatively few traces of their presence.
- Many thousands of Terrans moved into or through the sector over a period of around 500 years.
Hamadur and Darrians[edit]
From around -1800 to about -1500 Hamadur peoples, originating in Gushemege Sector, began emigrating to the rimward part of the sector. They retained a distinct ethnic identity and a nostalgic fondness for their homeland, which in later centuries greatly facilitated Imperial activity within the region.
During the Long Night, from -1776 to the year 0, there was limited external interest in the sector: in general the worlds within its borders continued to develop independently. Some didn't survive the decline in interstellar trade, some populations relocated, and some thrived, taking the opportunity to found new outposts and colonies of their own.
- It is estimated that between 40% and 60% of the worlds in Far Frontiers were inhabited by the onset of the Long Night.
The current borders of the Zhodani Consulate were established by around -1000. Larger Zhodani settlements began to appear within the territory claimed by the Consulate.
- Around -1000 far-ranging Darrian traders were operating within the sector. Their activities ceased following the Maghiz, when their homeworld's star underwent a period of catastropic stellar activity and effectively ended their fledgling civilization.
Modern Settlement[edit]
By around -100 the spread of reliable Sylean jump technology enabled new waves of explorers and settlers to wander to spinward. Many of these were members of groups who had a difficult relationship with the expanding Sylean Federation and subsequently the new Third Imperium. They found the concept of Imperial rule distasteful, their customs or practices conflicted with what was considered acceptable, or or more commonly they simply yearned for personal freedom and independence. These groups settled previously barren worlds in sectors all across the vast territories Behind the Claw, including within Far Frontiers.
- The Consulate, focused on the Core Expeditions, was slow to fully comprehend the scale of the immigration.
- Sword Worlds traders are known to have been active in the sector around this time.
- The first modern independent state within the sector, the Zelphic Primacy, formed in the early 50s.
A number of interstellar states began to emerge during the 500s, claiming and settling large swathes of territory.
Substantial Imperial settlement began from the 650 onwards. Multiple millions of Imperial citizens relocated to the sector.
- The peak of Imperial immigration was marked by the establishment of the Trelyn Domain in 980.
- Solomani are known to have been present in the sector. It is believed that they used high jump-rated vessels to cross the Great Rift.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The following languages are among the most commonly used within this astrographic region:
- Descar, a local language with Vlazhdumecta and Vilani origins, spoken within the central-rimward parts of the sector.
- Local Hamadur languages, descended from Old Anglic and Vilani.
- Oynprith, a ceremonial and ritualistic language, apparently universal among Droyne and Chirper communities.
- Riftian Anglic, a dialect of one of the two principal languages of the Imperium.
- Vlazhdumecta: the language of the Vlazhdumecta people. Many dialects exist.
- Local languages descended from Vlazhdumecta.
- Vilani, one of the two principal languages of the Imperium.
- Zdetl, the language of the Zhodani and the Zhodani Consulate.

Historical Eras[edit]
The Vlazhdumecta minor human race apparently originate here, having received the jump drive from the Zhodani thousands of years ago.
The Zhodani Consulate became alarmed at the rate of Vlazhdumecta expansion and decided to eliminate this potential threat to Consulate security. In a series of political, economic, and finally military moves, the Consulate “absorbed” the Vlazhdumecta core worlds in Far Frontiers. Soon after the absorption of the Vlazhdumecta core worlds, the Vlazhdumecta mercantile empire began to fall apart. Within a few centuries, the Vlazhdumecta Colonisation Sphere had completely collapsed, causing much disquiet and controversy in the Consulate, especially in neighbouring Yiklerzdanzh Sector.
