- Life here is poor, but most people make by and live as happily as they can.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Cabala Subsector of Far Frontiers Sector.
- It is a secondary world within the Talak system.
- This is a hot world, with a climate of high temperatures.
- This is a "low technology" world with technology competencies well below standard for Charted Space.
- This world hosts a Talak Military Base, associated with the occupation forces.
Description (Astrography & Planetology) [2][edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Vahjdi has a solitary primary star named Nijet.
- It is a turbulent yellow giant.
Talak has a solitary primary star. Nijet

It occasionally experiences powerful flare activity, causing intense EM noise.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld, Talak, orbiting at 10.8 AU.
- x2 secondary rocky worlds. These are inhabited Vahjdi, orbiting at 8.7 AU, and corrosive atmosphere Monkodo, orbiting at 14.2 AU.
- x1 large gas giant, Galsimar, orbiting at 18.7 AU.
- It retains a number of large moons.
- x1 planetoid belt, the Kasama Belt, lying at a mean distance of 25.0 AU.
Secondary World Data[edit]
Vahjdi orbits Nijet, the system's giant primary star, at a distance of 8.7 AU.
- It has an orbital period of 13 years 247 days (4,995 standard days).
It orbits within the star's Habitable Zone.
- It lies within the zone's warmer inner H+ region
- It receives higher levels of stellar energy.
The world has a very slow rotation period: one local day is equivalent to 70 standard days (almost 1700 standard hours).
- There are 71.4 local days in a local year.
- During the local day, the world experiences around 100 hours of dawn, 750 hours of daylight, 100 hours of twilight, and 750 hours of night.
Secondary World Size (S)[edit]
Vahjdi is a Meso World between 8,800km and 10,400km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.6G and 0.8G. The horizon will appear about 4.4km away.
Secondary World Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Vahjdi has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. The Thin Atmosphere does not require survival gear although it may be hard on sophonts not accustomed to it.
- Temperatures during the long local day are high but fall to low levels during the night.
Secondary World Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Vahjdi has 05-15% of its surface covered by liquid water or ice. Wilderness refueling will be difficult. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are Hell Worlds or Poor Worlds depending on their atmosphere.
- Large regions of the surface are arid.
Satellites[edit]
Vahjdi retains a fairly close, relatively large moon.
- It orbits once every standard week.
Secondary World Geography and Topography[edit]
A basic map of Vahjdi showing the small seas and lakes (Ur, blue), hills and uplands (Kapak'n and Vahajah, paler brown), mountain ranges (Kap-Altha'n, darker brown), and arid regions and deserts (T'kahrejyi and Jarwehj, shades of tan-green depending on latitude).
- Areas around bodies of water are vegetated.
The natives divide the terrain of Vahjdi into Jah ("Lands") -- a categorization referring to division of land by terrain, purpose, or quality.
- Jarwehj: "Sand"; the dunes, that unlike other parts of the desert can be crossed but not lived in.
- Kaijur-jah: "Seaborn Lands", coastal terrain
- Kap-Altha'n: "Mountains"
- T'kahrejyi: "Deep Desert"
- Ur: "Sea". Note that coastal settlements often incorporate this into their name, e.g. Urseg and Urwed.
- Vahajah: "Brownlands"
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Abundant native life occupying a wide range of ecological niches. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
- Native lifeforms are thermophilic - they thrive in high temperatures and arid conditions.
A faffad (plural, faffad'n), a common local herd beast. Larger examples can be ridden, and have been domesticated by the N'Raqah tribes of the desert.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
The system contains two inhabited worlds - Vahjdi, the innermost planet, and Talak, the mainworld, the second world out from the star. The two worlds have similar orbital velocities. At their closest, they are within 2.1 AU of one another, and at their furthest separation they lie 19.5 AU apart. It takes around 10 standard years for the two worlds to move between their closest and furthest separation: for about two standard years in every twenty, the two worlds are quite close.
Human occupation of the Talak system and of Vahjdi goes back at least two thousand years. The first settlers were humans of Vilani descent who undertook colonizing efforts in the region – efforts that proved abortive and resulted in a scattering of technologically primitive "lost colonies" across the region.
Talak was, until 1097, a collection of rival states at war with one another. These internecine conflicts ended a decade ago when one of the more powerful states, named Kartuk, developed primitive fission weapons and broke the military stalemate. Talak is now united under a senate of Kartukan military officers led by a Triumvirate elected from the senate's own ranks. As with all dictatorships faced with peace, Kartuk needed some outside foe to unify the people in purpose and willingness to accept hardship. The technology which won the wars was marshaled toward the conquest of space. Within a few years fleets of primitive transports were making the crossing to Vahjdi, bringing civilization and unity to the barbarians that inhabited the world. This development shocked outside observers; no one thought Talak capable of such an undertaking at its present level of technology.
Stellar Activity[edit]
Nijet, the system's unstable yellow giant primary star, occasionally experiences powerful flare activity. This causes intense EM noise, generating interference on communications and sensors.
- Nijet's bursts of activity generally last for a few hours before dying down again.
- Vahjdi's proximity to the star causes it to experience stronger effects than Talak.
World Spaceport (St)[edit]
Vahjdi has a Class G Spaceport, poor quality secondary installation for handing expected in-system traffic. It can supply a only a few amenities. There is unrefined fuel available for purchase. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport.
- The world is host to a Talak Military Base.
World Population (P)[edit]
Vahjdi has a population of 30,000,000 sophonts (tens of millions).
- The population has Zhodani, Imperial, and Vlazhdumecta heritage.
- Many families can trace their ancestry to pre-Long Night Vilani colonists.
There are two major ethnic groups:
- The coastal Baku peoples, who farm during the 10 standard week-long local day and remain within their settlements during the 10 standard week-long local night.
- Nomadic desert tribes, who tend their herds and stay ahead of the deepest part of the night.
Urbanization[edit]
Small Baku settlements can be found around the shores of the worlds lakes and seas.
- The major settlements are connected by Talak-manufactured monorail lines.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
- Avej, a local language with Vilani origins and Vlazhdumecta influences.
- It is the primary language of the Baku, the coast-dwelling people, and of many desert tribes further inland.
- Riftian Anglic, a dialect of one of the two principal languages of the Imperium.
- Zdetl, the language of the Zhodani and the Zhodani Consulate.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Vahjdi possesses a Technology Level of TL–4.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Telephone and telegraphs, widespread printing.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early electricity, hydrocarbon internal combustion.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Trains and early automobiles.
- Water: Clippers and steam ships.
- Air: Dirigibles, balloons, very basic rockets.
World Government (G)[edit]
Vahjdi has a Captive Government or Colony. The world is ruled by an external government, there is no self-rule. This is a colony or conquered area. The local government is an oligarchy appointed by, and answerable only to, the external government.
Vahjdi is under military occupation by the armed forces of Talak, the mainworld of the system.
- Talak military forces control all the major Baku settlements, as well as multiple isolated mining sites and resource processing facilities.
- Elements of The Golden Legion, an elite Talak unit with a brutal reputation, have been deployed to the world.
World Law (L)[edit]
Vahjdi has a high law level with laws covering many areas of interactions of people, corporations, and the government. A few worlds with this law level may be Amber Zones. Any interaction with the judicial system requires an Advocate trained in the local legal system. Law enforcement is present almost everywhere, either as people or via technology. Legal proceedings can take weeks to months to resolve and involve a dozen or more people. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (outside private residences or visiting starships).
World Culture[edit]
The world lies within the Zhodani Shadow, a region strongly influenced by the society and culture of the Zhodani Consulate.
