A Dirigible is a lighter than air (LTA) aircraft type, an aerial vehicle.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

An airship or dirigible balloon is a type of aerostat or lighter-than-air aircraft that can navigate through the air under its own power. Aerostats gain their lift from large gasbags filled with a lifting gas that is less dense than the surrounding air.

Expected Airship Development Sequence[edit]

Foundational Age Societies[edit]

The first airships are generally unguided floating aircraft.

Technological Period: TL:1-9 and Tech-Name: Ur-Tech
Common Characteristics: TBD, etc.
Tech Epoch TL-Range Remarks
Tool Making Epoch TL:1-3 The first balloons arise which are used for observation and are often tethered. They are most often true floaters with no ability to maneuver or direct their flight.
Division of Labor Epoch TL:4-6 Early aviation sees multi-wings and dirigibles occupy the same skies. As airplanes further develop, they eventually outpace the dirigible in most roles.
Processor Epoch TL:7-9 Dirigibles start to see more technical innovations making them more competitive in many flyer roles.

Interstellar Age Societies[edit]

Gravitic trains have little to no need for preprepared infrastructure.

Technological Period: TL:10-18 and Tech-Name: Stell-Tech
Common Characteristics: TBD, etc.
Tech Epoch TL-Range Remarks
Gravitics Epoch TL:10-12 Grav assisted dirigibles can do amazing things and are a viable mass transit platform in many markets.
Biologicals Epoch TL:13-15 Most dirigibles have been edged out by cheaper gravcraft, but they still have advantage in some niche markets.
Artificials Epoch TL:16-18 No one knows where the future will go with mass transit. Some cities have posited that planetwide gravitic control networks will become possible rather than a combination of continental travel networks supplemented by air/rafts, G-carriers, and Grav Trains.

The line between Spaceplane and Spaceship is blurred.
If the design is described as a Vehicle then its a Spaceplane;
if it is described as a Ship its a Spaceship.
