Description (Specifications)[edit]
The Protectorate is one of the largest and oldest extant states in Far Frontiers Sector. Over the last century it has been courting a number of neutral worlds within the region, inducting them as client states and expanding its economic and cultural influence.

Government & Politics[edit]
The Protectorate is a coalition of systems governed by a loose political body called the High Council. The Council is composed of one representative from each member planet and meets in the Palace of Stars on Caractacalla. Each representative has a large personal retinue of advisers, a supporting Office divided into various Departments and run by hundreds of members of staff, as well as an elite, well-equipped personal security detachment drawn from the Protectorate Legions.
- It is usually classified as a type of Confederation.
Goals[edit]
- Maintain the status quo, including Protectorate dominance of Taemerlyk and Inverness Subsectors.
- Guarantee of interstellar trade and commerce.
- Achieve self-sufficiency. Many items that were almost exclusively imported in the past (usually from the Imperium) are now in the intermediate stages of being produced domestically.
Protectorate Ministry of Justice[edit]
The Ministry of Justice oversees criminal cases that do not fall under local (planetary) law, such as interstellar piracy or cases involving multiple worlds.
Military & Intelligence[edit]
The Protectorate Naval Administration operates as a local peace-keeping force in times of calm, but when activated to full alert status it serves as the central cadre for the combined Protectorate Planetary Navies.
- Based within the Calamain system, the PNA keeps its main fleet units in reserve and only activates them in time of emergency or for training cruises.
[edit]
The Protectorate Space Navy has a proud tradition.
Ground Forces[edit]
The Protectorate Legions consist of ten brigades of elite marines. Each brigade has their own Chapter Class Battle Transport and is commanded by a marine brigadier general.
- These forces perform independent operations or form a cadre for local armies.
- A particularly notable action was the eradication of Chalq Dhamon rebels who had occupied mining facilities in the Shadowsand system.
The Scatters[edit]
The Scatters is a small Main of twenty-two systems that forms the heart of The Protectorate, joining the majority of its core worlds. It is officially known as the Caractacalla Scatters.
- An eclectic mix of high cargo capacity, low jump rating vessels move along the Main, carrying vast amounts of goods and commodities between its member worlds.
- Worlds lying within the main are highlighted in tan.
Its systems are patrolled by Protectorate military vessels, which suppress piracy and guarantee interstellar trade.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
The Protectorate formed in 536 from a group of worlds lying on a small Main called the Caractacalla Scatters. Over the centuries its borders have grown and shrunk: in 695 it granted independence to its fractious rimward colony worlds in Taemerlyk Subsector, which came together to form the Union of Garth, while a number of new members formally joined The Protectorate in later years.

The polity borders the Raider's Blight, a historical and astropolitical region within the coreward half of Far Frontiers Sector. Thousands of years ago, the region was the center of the Sky Raiders culture -- the Zhodani ended Sky Raider dominance within the area and have prevented interstellar states from forming within it ever since. The "ghost" of the Sky Raider region can be seen as a characteristic dent in the Consulate's rimward border.
Demographics[edit]
Significant populations of the following sophont races reside within this polity:
- Humaniti (human races)
- Mixed Heritage
- Solomani (major race).
- Zhodani (major race), principally visiting traders or diplomatic parties.
- Vlazhdumecta (human minor race).
Linguistic Topography[edit]
- Riftian Anglic, a dialect of one of the two principal languages of the Imperium.
- Local languages descended from Vlazhdumecta.
- These include Danatic (spoken on Caractacalla), Kitalla, and Thetric, a trade language.
- Zdetl, the language of the Zhodani and the Zhodani Consulate.
Symbols[edit]
The Protectorate symbol is, officially, a "stylized sail-powered watercraft upon a sea of stars".
It is said to represent either the spirit of exploration or the protection of interstellar trade.
Some suggest it looks more like a Kappell (the traditional pointed-crown knitted hat worn by Protectorate judges) and denotes legal authority over the stars.
(An older version of the symbol).
Major Historical Events Timeline[edit]
These are some of the more important historical events that have affected this polity:
- The Protectorate reached its "full" size of 39 systems in 690, only to lose the ten world Union of Garth to an independence movement in 695.
- In 788, under political pressure from local Zhodani governors, the Protectorate gave up its neutrality for an alliance with the distant Third Imperium.
- In the early 900s the Protectorate began to spread its influence and economic power into Retan Subsector, with many worlds in the region becoming Protectorate client states.
