Zarushagar Sector, while a core sector, isn't a vibrant, bustling area of high business and politics.

  • It is something of a back water and a place that traders often pass through rather than stop at its important destinations.
  • It is best known for the presence of one of the terminuses of the Great Rift and a significant Imperial Navy presence. The rift is a natural barrier to trade and military action from rimward space.

Description (Specifications)

Zarushagar, while not being a highly populated or terribly rich place, is nevertheless a very vibrant sector full of interesting locations to visit.

  • It has a moderate number of native sophont civilizations (NILs) and many scholars come and go studying these intelligent species and their interesting cultures and technologies.
  • It is well noted for the Darmine, a Minor Human Race, with a vibrant trading culture that has left its mark on the area.
  • The Darmine have long been oppressed by the Third Imperium and many suspect that such resentment will one day lead to rebellion.
  • Zarushagar is also a major Imperial Navy stronghold with the important tasking of managing Aslan Ihatei invasions.
    • The local fleets often train against hypothetical Solomani and Hierate Aslan opponents.

History & Background (Dossier)

Zarushagar Sector lies upon relatively short paths from both Core, Vland, and the Solomani Rim, making it a crossroads for conquerors of which a number have passed through this system at various points in history, generally leaving behind vast swathes of destruction and misery.

Native Sophonts: 1105

The following races (sophont species) are believed to have originated within this area:

Note that the Thaki, while a very real civilization, are believed by most Imperials to be a myth. A book written by self-proclaimed Professor Indigo Lunit claimed to have discovered evidence of a race she called Others during the latter years of the Civil War. Lunit's book advanced the theory that the Others rose to intelligence after the Ancient's Final War and that they explored the sector using sublight starships. The book offered little supporting evidence to back its claims and was quickly dismissed by the scientific community of the day, but in fact the civilization did exist at Siam/Iimii (Zarushagar 0518).

The M'Nengi race currently in Dagudashaag Sector are thought to have originated in Zarushagar. It is also generally accepted that their Generation Ship Giaani M'n was built by another, as yet unidentified race and that a viable colony of M'Nengi were somehow stranded onboard as it drifted through space. The M'Nengi seemed to retain the knowledge of how to maintain it through rituals, without any real sense of understanding. It is quite possible that this builder race was the Thaki.

Demographics: 1105

Significant populations of the following races (sophont species) reside within this area:

Religion

One of the most common religions is the Followers of Telor, a codified form of a loose polytheism. Telorists believe that anything that happens in fours (or multiples or fractions of 4) has a significant hidden meaning. The sun, the moons, the land, and the water are seen as primary deities.

The Code of Ledriasda is another common religion.

Historical Eras

The Consolidation Wars targeted Zarushagar, specifically two pocket empires whose traders had brought local prosperity using Vilani-derived jump-1 technology: the Darmine and the Dishaan.

It took 80 years of war to break the Dishaan, and then the Vilani were left with the problem of what to do with their new client race. It proved virtually impossible to impose Vilani culture on the self-centred Dishaan without piling on outrageously negative consequences for straying; in practice, the Dishaan were largely confined to their homeworld and placed under constant surveillance.

The Darmine, though a peaceful race, had a strong streak of individualism. It was an escape valve from the strong tradition of responsibility for the public good in their society, and a backlash against the Vilani’s stifling culture. While they might be group-oriented, the Darmine greatly respected the adventurer, the daring and innovative individual. Perhaps the most common literary hero was the wandering loner; a person who stepped into a difficult situation and set things aright. As such, while less overtly troublesome than the Dishaan, they were subtly rebellious all the same.

During the Nth Interstellar War, the First Imperium's hold on Zarushagar finally lessened. By this point, Imperial fleets were technologically outclassed by the innovative Terrans, and were usually outgunned as well, but they fought tenaciously. The Terrans sought allies among disaffected Imperial subjects. The Geonee of Massilia, though slow to respond -- being unable or unwilling to rebel until they could be sure of Terran support -- began an uprising, and then the Darmine revolt began the following year, being much more enthusiastic. Finally, after a hard-fought campaign ending in the Battle of Three Suns, the Suerrat of Ilelish declared their independence and allied with the Terran Confederation.

Under Solomani rule, minor races prospered. The Darmine culture in Zarushagar was allowed to flourish under the Rule of Man. While some historians attribute these events to Solomani “broad-mindedness”, the fact was that simple pragmatism demanded such a stance. Numerically outnumbered by the Vilani, the Solomani granted regional autonomy and home rule to many groups that supported and assisted the new regime.

The Darmine Corporate, more of a loose trade association than a real interstellar government, kept the Zarushagar Sector free of the worst effects of the Long Night. It continued to support its worlds through the founding of the Third Imperium and the Ilelish Pacification Campaign. The Darmine resistance to the campaign was primarily political and economic rather than military. The resistance continued for more than 40 years, until the Darmine convinced themselves that the Third Imperium wouldn’t be a repeat of the First. In 120, when Ishag formally joined the Imperium, the Darmine Corporate was dissolved.

These are some of the more important historical events that have affected this sector:

Politics & Diplomacy (Interstellar Relations)

The Vilani once united the sector's many disparate elements into a single, governed whole under the Ziru Sirka, and the Terrans did the same under the Rule of Man. And the Third Imperium was no different, fists of iron and heavy-handed methods led to an interstellar community in Zarushagar Sector with little to no trust in higher authorities.

  • Local communities often form independent societies and trade coalitions in response to these experiences.
  • There is little record of many of the smaller pocket empires that once dotted the area before Vilani subjugation and after the Long Night but many once existed and the local worlds have not forgotten their once independent origins.
  • The Duchy of Oasis and the Darmine Corporate are two such hold-outs against the Imperial steamroller.
  • Much of the sector looks to those entities or their successors for indications where the political winds will blow.

Economic Astrography

Logo Trade and Commerce.png

With so many well-travelled trade routes (especially greater mains) in the area, much business travels through Zarushagar. Many industrial planets and good quality starports have been developed to capture some of this wealth. And yet, very little of the prosperity associated with this trade seems to remain in the area. Many very bright Zarushagarii citizens have been investigating and researching this phenomenon. The Sector Duke and much of the local landed nobility are also involved.

Corporations

Corporations and organizations active within the Sector include:

Security & Defense

Navy escorts are still needed for merchants within certain regions of the sector as pirates are known to hole up in secret bases in the Great Rift. Naval patrols have been searching the area for centuries trying to find every small asteroid, nebula base, and planetesimal with a secretive pirate base, though to little avail.

The sector lies on the edge of the Great Rift.

  • The rift hinders travel and commerce within the region.
  • It has placed a boundary on Imperial settlement and expansion within the area.

All the right elements exist in Zarushagar Sector to build a thriving and very prosperous community and yet it has never occurred.

  • Some blame outsiders and conquerors while others look within.
  • Whatever the result, Zarushagar has always seemed to fall short of its potential.
