The Syleans of Capital (Core 2118) are a technologically advanced Minor Human Race with a human appearance.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
The Syleans are a minor human race originating on Sylea, now Capital (Core 2118).
Pure-blooded Syleans tend to be large and pale-skinned, with around 10% being albino. There is relatively little physical diversity, with most Syleans having round heads with broad faces, wide-set eyes, long noses, and very square chins.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Though contacted early by the Vilani and made part of the First Imperium, a small group of Syleans were kept on reservations on Sylea, maintaining their pre-Vilani culture. These scattered tribes, living in largely inhospitable areas, were left alone because no one thought they possessed anything of value.
At the beginning of the Long Night, with both the Vilani and Solomani no longer in command of an empire, the Syleans from the reservations and a number of Sylean nationalists discovered a copy of Maar Ki Zon or the "Book of the Way", a religious text from the pre-Vilani contact Sarnese Empire. The unusual religion of Maar Zon helped the Syleans to keep their technology throughout the Long Night. They influenced the Solomani-Vilani fusion society that began to reclaim interstellar trade and travel.
As high-tech fusion power and other equipment wore out and couldn't be replaced, the world's Solomani ruling elite made a planet-wide search for alternative low-tech energy sources. The planet's major economically viable sources of thorium and uranium lay within the Sylean reservation territories. Solomani industrialists made a deal with the Syleans, and established a grid of nuclear power reactors that virtually conferred a planetary monopoly over power generation. The Solomani and Syleans therefore became very wealthy. Middle and upper class Solomani and Syleans interbred extensively, until, around -1200, there were few distinctions between the races.
At first only a trade confederation, the nation based on Sylea slowly grew to become the Sylean Federation, which ultimately evolved into the Third Imperium.
Culture & Society (Ethnology)[edit]
The Maar Zon adherents, known as Lan Ki Zon or "Followers of the Way", still exist on Sylea. The Lan Ki Zon are responsible for maintaining the Sylean culture. The Kel Ten Zon, "Masters of the Way", are the religion's major authority.
Sylean mythology includes the Guarek, a race of small mischievous supernatural beings akin to the elves, trolls, and dwarves of Old Terra and the gishkan of Old Vland. Sylean religious literature includes the Heavenly Muster chapter in an epic describing the Dawn War between gods and the primal forces that opposed the creation of Sylea.
Government & Politics (Leadership)[edit]
Syleans usually have no difficulty living under outsiders' legal systems. In particular, Imperial law is almost completely compatible with Maarist religious law, so Syleans are enthusiastic participants in the Imperial political system.

In Ley Sector, the second Matarishan Federation was formed in -27 when dissident Syleans made contact with the former worlds of the Matarishan. Other dissident groups proceeded further into Gateway and Glimmerdrift Reaches sectors, creating a number of "pocket empires". Some groups were absorbed by existing states.
