Hinterworlds style="width: 250px; height: 350px; border: solid 1px black; float: right; clear: left" | |||||||||||||||||
The Hinterworlds Sector is a region of largely balkanized space, a number of smaller world-states sandwiched between larger powers, and often struggling to not be swallowed by the larger fish.
The following major powers control territory or have influence within this sector:
Description (Specifications)
The Hinterworlds are a crossroads sector, sort of a wild west of Non-Aligned World-states, unregulated trade, and, best of all, unregulated freedom.
- The K'kree have an unofficial presence in this sector and all omnivores and carnivores have made note of this. It is a big part of the interstellar politics of the area, at least in the coreward subsectors.
The area is fairly accessible to interstellar trade and many well-known trade routes exist here, alongside numerous secretive and poorly known alternatives.
- There are many stories and rumors about uncharted astrographic objects, including starless rogue worlds, that exist within the region.
- To date, no known star-charting organization has yet adequately explored these leads.
Physcial Astrography
The following astrographic data regarding the sector has been determined:
- It is an average density region.
- The sector contains a number of small rift regions.
- The brightest star in the sector is the blue-white bright giant primary of the PaGa system.
Stellar Distribution
A basic map showing the distribution and size of stars within the Hinterworlds.
- The color corresponds to the visible color of the star, which links to its spectral classification.
- The size as shown indicates both the physical size of the object and its relative brightness.
(Chart sourced from Traveller Map).
Note that the stars as depicted are representative. Any star, no matter what its size, is a mere speck within the hex it occupies.
- Ordinary main sequence stars can barely be seen from even a hex away.
- Huge, intensely luminous giant stars can be seen from across the sector and far beyond.
Rift Regions
[[File:Chart Hinterworlds Sector Rift Regions Labelled Basic.png|350 px|right|thumbnail|(Chart sourced from Traveller Map).
The Hinterworlds has all or part of four distinct rift regions and also contains a number of minor voids that are too small to qualify as a true rift. These various areas of lower stellar density serve to hamper travel and restrict commerce within its boundaries.
- Jump-2 and Jump-3 corridors of stars, the arteries of interstellar trade connecting the various clusters, wind between them.
Named rift regions include:
Nature of Rifts
Locally at least, a rift is an astrographic concept based purely on Jump Drive performance.
Rift regions generally relate to regular commercial traffic and the way it travels between destinations. Merchant vessels with jump-4 drives or better are fairly rare because of the higher costs involved in operating the vessel, the lower revenue generated by the reduced cargo space due to the need for large fuel tanks, and the relative paucity of technologically advanced maintenance facilities within the region. As a result, the vast majority of merchant vessels are capable of jump-3 or less.
- Large areas that cannot be crossed by Jump-3-capable vessels are denoted as rifts.
- The nature and borders of a rift may be determined by other criteria in different regions.
In order to qualify as a rift, the region must have ten or more contiguous hexes. Many areas have minor void regions that are too small to qualify as a true rift, but are still significant enough to seriously hamper and channel interstellar travel.
Military vessels and specialist ships such as couriers are often only marginally affected by the presence of smaller rifts. Larger rift regions have a greater significance, requiring lengthy detours or complex refueling operations or creating bottlenecks that even the longest range vessels are forced to travel through.
World Listing
Comprehensive Second Survey data for all worlds lying within the Hinterworlds is available.
- The primary source material for all data is Traveller Map.
- Other sources may differ: some elements of the data may be contradictory or incorrect.
- Data is occasionally updated as new information becomes available.
- Scouting missions gathering reliable, verified data can receive substantial payment.
AAB library archives contain expanded data about the following systems:
Note that some Second Survey data, though only 40 years old, may already be out of date.
- Verified updated data is constantly sought.
Economic Astrography
The following commercial and economic data regarding the sector is available:
Importance
A chart is provided showing importance as green circles centered on a world, with larger circles indicating greater importance and overlapping circles giving an overview of a region's economic significance. While importance is largely a measure of raw economic power, other influencing factors include starport quality, political significance, a high planetary habitability rating, or even the local culture.
Importance also gives a good indication of the sphere of influence that individual worlds exert.
Corporations
Corporations and organizations active within the sector include:
- General Products, an Imperial megacorporation involved in heavy industry and manufacturing.
- GSbAG, an Imperial megacorporation involved in ship construction.
- Hortalez et Cie, an Imperial megacorporation specializing in banking and finance.
- Ling Standard Products, an Imperial megacorporation engaged in widescale resource extraction and processing.
- Makhidkarun, an Imperial megacorporation specializing in communications and entertainment.
- Naasirka, an Imperial megacorporation with long historical ties to the region and specializing in electronics and robotics.
- Sharurshid, an Imperial megacorporation specializing in finance and commerce.
- Star Patterns Trading, a Hiver corporation involved in transport and logistics. It maintains good relations with both the Solomani Confederation and the Imperium.
- SuSAG, an Imperial megacorporation specializing in commercial chemistry, pharmaceuticals, and genetic engineering.
- Transstar, a Solomani megacorporation specializing in transport and logistics. It operates across 13 sectors, represented by the 13 stars in its logo.
- Tukera Lines, an Imperial megacorporation specializing in transport and logistics.
- Zirunkariish, a Vilani megacorporation specializing in investment, finance, and insurance.
Trade Routes
High cargo capacity, low jump rating vessels move along the clusters and traces of the sector, carrying vast amounts of goods and commodities between their member worlds. Jump-2 and Jump-3 feeder routes work their ways around the rifts and voids that dot the region, linking the various clusters and traces. Some of the more important of these include:
- Alike Run (major trade route)
- Bruia Diagonal Run (major trade route)
- Beyerly's Path (major trade route)
Mains
Main is an astrographic term for groups of 50 or more systems that are accessible by jump-1-capable starships.
Mains are highlighted in green: two mains lie within the sector.
Clusters
Cluster is a broad astrographic term for groups of between 10 and 50 systems that are accessible by jump-1-capable starships.
Clusters are highlighted in tan: eight clusters lie wholly or partially within the sector.

- Anubis Main
- Cimeon Cluster
- Gniivi Main
- Lu Cluster
- McCracken-Vanguardia Main
- Riies Cluster
- Tlianke Hook
Traces

Traces are highlighted in brown: fifteen trace-sized clusters of worlds lie wholly or partially within the sector.
- Boilingbrook Cluster
- Dermif Trace
- Effit Trace
- Gefry Cluster
- Gomms Cluster
- Goromas Trace
- Haven Trace
- Horizon Cluster
- Hyam Trace
- Nerfane Group
- Nummen Trace
- Scratch Trace
- Shilling Cluster
- Treber Group
- Trial Cluster
Jump Bridges
Jump Bridges are locations within empty hexes that contain caches of fuel and supplies. They allow lower jump rating vessels to bridge gaps between distant worlds by providing a halfway point. The hexes they lie within are vast, and without exact coordinates to jump to within it a vessel could end up with empty tanks in empty wilderness, perhaps as much as a light-year away from any hope of rescue. Where they do exist, Jump Bridges are heavily guarded and access is not generally granted to those without the correct credentials.
- No commercial jump bridges are known to currently exist within the sector.
- It has long been rumored that the Imperium, Imperial megacorporations, or other interests may maintain covert jump bridge facilities at strategically important points, but no reliable proof of this has ever been provided.
