The Stalkers of 214-389 (Hinterworlds 1328) are a technologically sophisticated Minor Non-Human Race with a Non-humanoid appearance.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

This amorphous, quadrupedal species from the Hinterworlds Sector are technically known as the Outcasts of the Whispering Sky. However, they are more commonly known and referred to as the Stalkers by Humaniti due to their two-meter long necks.

Physiology & Environment (Ecology)[edit]

A Stalker appears as a quadrupedal "blob" with an extensible neck and one eye.

They descend from carnivorous ancestors with the siren lifestyle -- unusual for sophonts.

Psychology & Philosophy (Mindset)[edit]

Dour and reserved. Their name refers to their belief that the stars in the night sky are incoherent voices -- their bioluminescent language makes it appear so. The stars talk, but the Stalkers aren't permitted to know what about.

Two of the most prominent values in Stalker society are:

  • Paranoia
  • Xenophobia

This is because alien societies appear as an overwhelming, insane barrage of visual noise.

Stalkers are known for a "lurking-hiding" mentality. The early Stalker lived in shallow lakes, ponds, swamps and marshes; with its cumbersome trunk resting on the bottom, a Stalker would attract surface creatures by playing brief flitters of light across its eyecones. If the surface creature moved closer to investigate, the Stalker would abruptly extend its neck and seize the prey in its mandibles, then drag the creature underwater until it drowned.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Government & Politics (Leadership)[edit]

The government of this species is also known, simply, as the Outcasts of the Whispering Sky. This is likely a consequence of poor translation between Human languages and the luminous language of the Stalkers.

Society[edit]

Stalker young are kept sheltered until sexually mature, and parents are belligerent and tireless defenders. The young expect and are reassured by this; Stalkers are very clannish and dependent upon contact with their own kind, even as mature adults. Stalker "wanderers" occupy an interesting if ambiguous place in society. These people are considered to be somewhat mad, since they are willing to spend time among strange, chaotic species and forego the reassuring contact of other Stalkers. However, returning wanderers are instant celebrities, since it is primarily through these individuals that the Stalker populace learns more about other worlds and species.

Language & Letters (Communication)[edit]

They communicate through light patterns; the starry sky appears to be saying something they can't quite make out, hence the concept of "whispering sky" and their own status as outcasts.

Military & Intelligence (Force Projection)[edit]

The Stalker military is known as the Xenophobic Enforcement Agency. They have a strange assortment of space craft pressed into service to protect their territorial possessions. There is no real navy, just squadrons of system defense vessels assigned to each planet. Stalker xenophobic enforcement vessels, examples are described here.
