The Far Home Sector lies at the heart of the Distant Fringe region.

Description

A sector forming the trailing half of the Demon Cluster, the Distant Fringe proper. The center of the sector is dominated by the Demon's Eye, a blue supergiant star, the Demon's Eye Nebula, and by the broad Demon's Eye Rift that it lies within.

  • Basilisk's Eye (1723 Tarchon Sector). The extremely luminous white supergiant star, lying around 115 parsecs to coreward-trailing, can be clearly seen from all of the worlds lying within Far Home Sector.
  • Demon's Eye (1621 Far Home Sector). The intensely luminous blue supergiant star, lying at the center of the sector, can be clearly seen from all of the worlds lying within the Empty Stars and the Distant Fringe.

At the current time (5600AD) Far Home Sector contains five interstellar polities and three smaller territories.

  • The Firstworlds: A hereditary oligarchy (Fives) supported by a largely impersonal bureaucracy, with a legislature made up of elected officials and headed by an impartial Chancellor. It has a population of 8.491 billion sophonts (7.155 billion humans of Terran descent and 1.329 billion Hoppers) and approximately 7 million other sophonts (primarily Esaran, Meroquan, Temelik and other races associated with the University of Tal Varisa). The Firstworlds is hierarchical and has an entrenched social elite, the Fives, who enjoy a wealthy and privileged lifestyle. The Firstworlds sees itself as a bastion of traditionalist values and social decency.
  • Protectorate of Leset: A monolithic impersonal bureaucracy headed by the Protector. It has a population of 5.012 billion, almost entirely humans of Terran descent. The Protectorate is a Mantlerist state – the first to emerge in the Distant Fringe – and is relatively politically isolated. The Protectorate sees itself as a society of equals striving to bring equality and liberty to the downtrodden masses. However, some are far more equal than others – those in positions of power and influence enjoy advantages that the general population do not. The state is repressive and paranoid. A brutal pro-Mantlerist purge is underway and those deemed to be dissidents may suffer arrest, interrogation and incarceration for activities "against the interests of the State and the Citizens". The corrupt Firstworlds is disliked, though its downtrodden and exploited Gens will soon rise up and throw off the yoke of elitism. The barbaric and imperialist Worlds of The Leader is despised.
    • Client States: (the ANMaN Worlds). Systems that have undergone regime changes resulting in pro-Mantlerist movements coming to power. They have a population of 3.006 billion, almost all humans of Terran descent. They are by necessity politically close to the Protectorate.
  • Rimward Federation: an inward-looking representative democracy headed by the First Jerent and represented by the Assembly of the Federation. It is policed by the militaristic Guard. It has a population of 11.019 billion sophonts (roughly 10.96 billion humans of Terran descent and approximately 60 million Quemm). The Federation is intensely mercantile and Feds see themselves as shrewd traders, able to make a profit out of anything. Much of the Federation is run like a commercial business.
  • Sath Alliance: A loose confederation of Sath Factions with a population of approximately 21.279 billion. The most powerful groups are the Ka’sa Faction, the Shikh’aa Faction and the Khas'ahi Faction. They are presided over by a shadowy but powerful Overlord, the Issh’t’ka of the Sath Alliance. The Ka’sa and their Khas'ahi allies are fighting to protect their interests against human exploitation in the Hell Worlds region, while the Shikh’aa are focused on activities to rimward. The Sath have a profound dislike for humans, who they regard as interlopers and opportunists who have stolen "their" region of the galaxy.
    • Hell Worlds: Territory under military occupation by the Ka’sa Faction of the Sath Alliance and with a human population of approximately 14 million. An active, violent war is being fought between the embattled human inhabitants and the Sath invaders. The Sath have vast numbers of troops, though most are relatively poorly equipped. The human defenders, though hugely outnumbered, enjoy a technological advantage and employ large numbers of highly trained Mercenaries and Starmercs.
    • Sath Exploration: Territory currently being assessed by Shikh’aa Faction of the Sath Alliance. The systems lying within the Crown of the Void have been made accessible by the Ith-Saa-Ka Waypoint and their potential and resources are being appraised, with a view to future exploitation.
  • Worlds of The Leader: A non-charismatic dictatorship headed by The Leader. It has a population of slightly in excess of 2.15 billion, almost all humans descended from the population of the former Empire. The state is militaristic, aggressive, and much given to bombastic displays of military power. The Vigs, the state's feared internal security and intelligence service, has a dark reputation across the Sector. Supplies of food are always in limited supply within the Worlds, a factor that influenced their decision to take the Occupied Territories, particularly agricultural Zendar. The Worlds of The Leader has a profound dislike for the Protectorate and its Mantlerist policies.
    • Occupied Territories: Systems under military occupation by the Worlds of The Leader and with an approximate population of 60.31 million humans. Each world has had its government dissolved, has had martial law imposed, and is under the control of a military governor. Military occupation forces control the starports, the major population centers and other productive or important regions. Resistance movements strive to liberate their homelands – the most successful have been pro-Mantlerist groups. The Worlds' military occupation is heaviest on the agricultural world of Zendar.

Coreward-Trailing Quadrant

  • Pirate activity along the Outland Run Star Lane has seen a marked increase, though incidents are below historical levels.
  • The Protectorate of Leset is in turmoil following the exposure of wide scale Worlds of The Leader-funded espionage, intrusion and sabotage. A bloody political purge is underway, with anyone suspected of anti-Mantlerist beliefs facing interrogation and worse. The command structures of the armed forces, with a heritage drawn from the hated Fives, have been ravaged. They have been replaced by officers strongly loyal to the regime.
    • The Client States (the ANMaN Worlds) are suffering a bloody pro-Mantlerist military and cultural purge similar to that being experienced by the Protectorate. The increasingly hard line Mantlerist governments and their Protectorate military support have become entrenched and are broadly disliked. There are active resistance movements seeking to return the worlds to their former neutrality.
  • The commercial center of Ras Tennol has seen increasing civil unrest, political activism along strongly pro- and anti-Mantlerist lines, and has suffered acts of domestic terrorism. The Worlds of The Leader strongly supports anti-Mantlerist groups and has openly discussed regime change and even military intervention on the world. The government is concerned about the devolving – though still distant – situation with the Sath to rimward and increasing levels of piracy along the Outland Run Star Lane.
  • The bombastic and imperialistic Worlds of The Leader is sabre-rattling. In a blatant act of expansionism it has occupied a number of valuable worlds on the trailing edge of the Sector (the so-called Occupied Territories). Anonymous factors within that state continue to covertly channel financial and material support, and the Firstworlds government openly "gifts" the state with military hardware, most notably all of its major naval assets. The Worlds strictly enforces customs searches on ships travelling along the New Border Star Lane, particularly those engaging in trade with the Protectorate. The state is steadily building up its military forces along its trailing frontier.
    • The worlds of the Occupied Territories, formerly a part of the Empire, are culturally close to the Krayal Trace. They have a mutual language, a shared heritage of wealthy Fives families, and a deep fear of violent Mantlerist revolution. The Worlds conducted a military occupation of the region at the request of newly installed local regimes, in order to "stamp out the specter of Mantlerism". Their actions were broadly, though cautiously, supported by the Firstworlds. It is likely that these new regimes were manipulated into power by the actions of the Vigs. An alliance of armed resistance movements enjoying considerable local support is active: many have strong pro-Mantlerist leanings.
    • The Worlds of The Leader maintains a toe-hold within the Solitude system, lying within the Ritos Cluster and formally a member of the Protectorate. The tiny far companion star in the trinary system remained as League of Krayal territory following the collapse of the Empire and control subsequently passed to the Worlds of The Leader. Despite the immense separations between the stars in the Solitude system, both sides patrol aggressively and border incidents are commonplace.
    • The Vigs, the feared intelligence arm of the Worlds of The Leader, are active within the Subsector. They maintain a network of informants, handlers and sympathisers and move against anybody they deem to be an enemy of the State. They are able to call on military units as required. They particularly target Mantlerist organisations or anyone suspected of having Mantlerist sympathies.

Spinward-Rimward Quadrant

  • The increasingly influential worlds of Kuyt and Mar Isher dominate spinward-rimward trade.
  • Pirate activity along the regions Star Lanes has seen a marked increase, though incidents are substantially below historical levels.
  • The Rimward Federation is internally focused. It is set upon improving the domestic infrastructures and technological bases of its member worlds, but it does so ruthlessly and with scant regard for heritage and tradition. While the state actively promotes free trade and personal advancement, corporate influence and legal manipulation in high office are gradually eroding civil rights and disenfranchising large segments of the population. An increasingly proactive Mantlerist movement exists within the Federation.

Rimward-Trailing Quadrant

  • The powerful, industrialised world of Pador continues to expand its influence, having taken direct administrative control of a number of systems in the Pador-Aredian Cluster. It is pouring resources into the increasingly bitter fighting against the Sath in the Hell Worlds.
  • The Ka’sa Faction and their Khas'ahi allies of the Sath Alliance are engaged in a violent and bloody war against humans in the Hell Worlds region. They launch large-scale offensives and raids into human territory within the rimward-trailing quadrant of the sector, particularly along the Star Lane known as The Descent. They vastly outnumber the human defenders but their technology is markedly inferior.
    • The outnumbered human defenders of the Hell Worlds stand against a tsunami of Sath invaders. They occupy the wildernesses and outback regions of their worlds, launching strikes and raids against the enemy then withdrawing into their fastnesses. They are strongly supported by offworld volunteer battalions, mercenary units, and StarMerc vessels, and receive large-scale financial and logistical support from sources such as Pador.
The Shikh’aa Faction of the Sath Alliance see themselves as the elder members and are primarily neutral. They are focused on exploration into the empty and unexplored clusters of stars lying within the Moat Rifts and the Great Void. A great deal of their energy has gone into the construction of the Ith-Saa-Ka Waypoint and the emplacement of port facilities and infrastructure on previously barren worlds.

The Far Home sector has 225 worlds, of which 175 have native gas giants. The estimated population for the sector is 78 billion sophonts (not necessarily humans). There are 15 High population (Hi) worlds, nine Moderate population (Ph) worlds, 93 Non-industrial (Ni) worlds, 50 Low population (Lo) worlds, and eight Barren (Ba) worlds. There are 48 Agricultural (Ag) worlds versus 12 Pre-Agricultural (Pa) worlds, and 18 Non-Agricultural (Na) worlds. There are 30 Rich (Ri) worlds versus eight Industrial (In) worlds. There are 18 Asteroid (As) belts, 16 Desert (De) worlds, 24 Garden (Ga) worlds, 24 Ice-capped (Ic) worlds, 43 Poor (Po) worlds, 40 Vacuum (Va) worlds, and 12 Water (Wa) or Ocean (Oc) worlds. There are no Naval bases in the sector, no Scout bases, and no Way stations. The highest population world is Tal Varisa (Far Home 0911). The highest tech level is C at Ras Tennol (Far Home 2315), Pador (Far Home 2325), and Sudi Verisia (Far Home 3022). The average technology level is 6 (with most between 2 and 9).
