Windune is a nonindustrial desert hellworld with a population struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.

  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often form intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
  • This world has no free-standing water.
  • It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • This is a "low technology" world with technology competencies well below technology standards for Charted Space.
  • It is a member of the Protectorate of Leset in the Xelan Subsector of Far Home Sector, which is part of the Distant Fringe.

System Data[edit]

Russet-Windune System[edit]

The primary is Russet, an orange subgiant star. It has a luminosity of 4.67 Sols, a mass of 2.3 Sols, and a diameter of 4.592 million km. The inner system consists of (II-I) a trace atmosphere inner world, (II-II) a corrosive atmosphere inferno world, and (IV) a very thin atmosphere hospitable world – orbital positions (I) and (III) are empty. (V) Windune orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (VI-I) a very thin atmosphere hospitable world, (VI-II) a sparse stony planetoid belt, (VII) a ringed large gas giant, (VIII-I) a small gas giant, (VIII-II) a ringed large gas giant, and (IX) a vacuum iceworld form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data[edit]

(V) Windune[edit]

(V) Windune is designated the mainworld. It orbits Russet at a mean distance of 1.53 AU (228.9 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 1 year 91 days and a rotation period of 22.5 hours. The axial tilt is 33 degrees. Windune has a diameter of 8,077 km, a density of 5.28 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.61 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Standard, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.94 bar and a composition of 84% nitrogen (N2), 14% abiotic oxygen (O2), 1% argon (Ar), and 1% carbon dioxide (CO2), xenon (Xe), ozone (O3), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the low percentage of atmospheric oxygen, large amounts of airborne silicates and dust, and the lack of water vapor in the atmosphere. Approximately 0.3% of the surface is covered in lakes of liquid water: average tidal ranges are negligible. Mean surface temperature: 61°C. The climate is rated as Very Hot and experiences major seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is very active and powerful weather systems driven by the star surge across the globe.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

Total surface area: 205 million km², Land surface area: 204.4 million km², Water surface area: 600,000 km².

  • The oxygen in the atmosphere is abiotic in origin, produced by the photocatalytic reaction between the high levels of UV energy radiating from the star and titanium dioxide (TiO2), which is found in surface minerals such as ilmenite.

Native Lifeforms[edit]

Russet-Windune System[edit]

The cold marginally hospitable world lying in orbital position (VI) (within the H+ region of the outer system) has primitive native life, consisting entirely of microscopic cyanobacteria-parallels that exist in any location where they can find even a minimal trace of shelter and warmth. Their metabolic functions maintain the process of atmospheric renewal.

The large gas giant lying in orbital position (VIII-II) (within the outer system) has jovionoid lifeforms within its atmosphere.

No other world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Windune is a member of the Protectorate of Leset.

World starport[edit]

Windune has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level[edit]

Windune possesses a Technology Level of TL–4.

World government[edit]

Windune has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.
