Year One is the name given to the year that the first human colony was founded in the Distant Fringe.

This date is considered to be when the first deliberately cultivated agricultural harvest – a crop of maize – was gathered in on the surface of Tal Varisa.

From this point onwards the Distant Fringe was no longer a collection of outposts and bases on the edge of infinity, humans had literally put down roots.
