Hiwen is a nonindustrial vacuum world, which warrants hazardous environment precautions.

  • Life in a vacuum requires great discipline. After all, it only takes one forgotten seal on a vacuum suit to spell death. Those who survive tend to be very methodically-minded and attentive to small detail.
  • As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Demon's Eye Subsector of Far Home Sector.

Astrography and Planetology[edit]

This star system is detailed using the Fringian Variant System Description.

  • The supergiant primary of the Demon's Eye system and the huge Demon's Eye Nebula that surrounds it, lying a few parsecs to coreward-trailing, are clearly visible in the sky.
Hiwen has a solitary primary star.

System Data[edit]

Nothan-Hiwen System[edit]

The primary is Nothan, a dim red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.0025 Sols, a mass of 0.244 Sols, and a diameter of 334,000 km. (I-I) a trace atmosphere radworld, (I-II) a very thin atmosphere radworld, (II) a ringed small gas giant: (IIa) Hiwen is its only major satellite and is designated the mainworld, (III) a large gas giant, (IV) a sparse stony planetoid belt, (V-I) a ringed large gas giant, and (V-II) a small ice giant form the outer system. Most of the worlds retain satellites.

  • The star experiences periodic flare activity.

(II) Verran[edit]

(II) Verran is a ringed small gas giant that orbits Nothan at a mean distance of 0.51 AU (76.3 million km), within the outer system, and has an orbital period of 281 days 27 hours. It has a diameter of 31,000 km and an atmosphere consisting of 92% hydrogen (H2), 8% helium (He), and less than 1% methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia (NH3), water vapor (H2O) and other trace gases. It is a pale blue color with narrow dark blue bands. It retains a single major satellite.

Satellite[edit]

Verran retains one major satellite:

(IIr) Ring System (UWP YR00000-0, extending to 2 Diameters/65,000 km)
(IIa) Hiwen (designated the mainworld, orbiting at 5 Diameters/155,000 km)

Mainworld Data[edit]

Nothan-Hiwen System[edit]

(IIa) Hiwen[edit]

(IIa) Hiwen is the only major moon of (II) Verran and is designated the mainworld. It orbits its parent world at a mean distance of 5 diameters (155,000 km), with an orbital period of 9 days 17 hours: it is tidally locked to Verran. The axial tilt is 2 degrees relative to Verran. Hiwen has a diameter of 2,413 km, a density of 4.13 g/cm³ and a surface gravity of 0.14 G. Tidal stresses generated by the gravitational pull of Verran cause constant geological activity. The atmosphere is rated as Vacuum. The world has no hydrosphere. Mean surface temperature: -172°C.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

Total surface area: 18.3 million km².

Native Lifeforms[edit]

Nothan-Hiwen System[edit]

No world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

No information yet available.

World starport[edit]

Hiwen has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level[edit]

Hiwen possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
    • Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
    • Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
    • Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World government[edit]

Hiwen is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is by representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referenda, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.

World culture[edit]

Crude domes and cavernous mines predominate this desolate outpost. The installations are sparse and utilitarian, largely unadorned, except local gang graffiti. Free spirited and fiercely independent miners and settlers deeply distrust governmental intrusions and overreach. They prefer to mind their own business and are very self-reliant. Imports of air, food and water are all high priority and extremely high security deliveries. Efficient recycling is a deeply ingrained way of life. Striking it rich and ferreting out lucrative deposits are the common fantasy and dream. Unfortunately, most ore is mundane and unremarkable. As a result many casually overlook this world as unimportant. Appearances can be deceiving. Most law enforcement revolves around making sure all citizens get enough air, food and water. Inequitable division of vital resources is seen as highly offensive to this culture.
