Amdukan Sector has been a battleground between competing Vargr and Human civilizations like much of the Vargr Extents.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

This sector is an ancient one; many of the Vargr colonies here appear to predate interstellar spaceflight on Lair. Many suppose that the Ancients may have been involved. The Hhkar, another ancient civilization, also appear to have had a long history in the area.

Amdukan is currently the heart of the Julian Protectorate. Once a part of the Ziru Sirka, the First Imperium, the region was never incorporated into the Third Imperium, but it wasn't for lack of trying. The local cultures, rallied by the Menderes family of corporate fame, fought off the Imperium and formed their own interstellar state -- if "state" is the right word for a coalition as loose as the Julian Protectorate. Multiple nations, both single-world and interstellar; typically lively Vargr charisma-driven politics; a history of slavery and race wars; and the task of integrating orderly Vilani cultures with their Vargr antithesis: the fact that the Protectorate has endured, ever-shifting but strong, is quite incredible given what it's been up against. Amdukan Sector in particular also had to contend, at various points, with the hostility of both the returning Hhkar and the expansionist Lorean Hegemony -- and yet managed not only to endure both, but build bridges and bring these polities into the Protectorate.

Imperial observers may be baffled, but somehow the Julians make it work.

Linguistic Topography: 1105[edit]

The following languages are among the most commonly used within this astrographic region:

Languages of Humaniti:
  • Anglic: Common to many Human worlds.
  • Various other, local languages may be heard on Lorean worlds, but have no government support.
  • Vilani: One of the two official languages of the Third Imperium and common to many Human worlds. Many Human dialects in Amdukan have Vilani roots.
Languages of Vargr:
  • Irilitok: The language family of the most populous Vargr phenotype and ethnic culture within the Julian Protectorate.
  • Ovaghoun: The language family of a populous Vargr phenotype and ethnic culture.
  • Suedzuk: The language family of a populous Vargr phenotype and ethnic culture.
Languages of Major & Pervasive non-Human Races:
  • Hhraki: Also known as Hhkarn; the primary language of the Hhkar. Hhkar travel frequently and may be found wandering much of Julian and adjacent space.
  • Oynprith: The ritualistic, ceremonial language of Droyne communities throughout Charted Space.
  • Wawa-pakekeke-wawa: The common, precise and bureaucratic language of the Bwaps. Spoken on Bwap-dominated planets and by government functionaries on any world lucky enough to retain a dedicated Bwap workforce.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Like so much of the Vargr Extents, the history of Amdukan was one of perpetual conflict amongst the Vargr, between themselves and with practically everyone else. The Hhkar have been a major influence in the area for a number of millennia as well. Hhkar history mirrors that of the Vargr, with internecine civil wars and major societal disruption. One of the many mysteries of the region is the anomalous relationship between the Hhkar and the Droyne. Clearly the two species know of each other, but neither is divulging secrets.

Amdukan was a coreward holding of the Ziru Sirka at its height. Humans became particularly invested in the region when it was part of what the First Imperium called the Mikasirka Sphere.

Native Sophonts (NILs): 1105[edit]

The following races (sophont species) are believed to have originated within this area:

  • Humaniti (Human races)
    • None extant. Note that a Human Minor Race apparently once existed on Valdak. They were destroyed during a conflict with the native Qelf long before the modern starfaring era.
  • Non-Human Races
    • Hhkar: The Hhkar have migrated to and from this territory over many millennia; the location of their original world is uncertain; Skkyhrk is currently considered their homeworld; it has hosted their civilization at least twice.
    • Kaanen (extinct)
    • Qelf
    • There is some suspicion that an isolated submarine sophont civilization may exist on Tulloz; this is unconfirmed.
  • Terragens (Non-human Terran races)
    • None

Demographics: 1105[edit]

Significant populations of the following races (sophont species) reside within this area:

  • Humaniti (Human races)
    • Solomani
    • Vilani
      • Yilean heritage is not uncommon; many local Humans carry some Yilean genes. Given the notorious anti-Vargr politics of the Yilean state, overtly Yilean ethnic traits are often distrusted.

Major Historical Events Timeline: 1116[edit]

These are some of the more important historical events that have affected this sector:

  • -50,000: For reasons unknown, the Hhkar leave their homeworld using ramscoop-equipped vessels and colonize Skkyhrk (which will be known to Vargr as Urinir) and other nearby planets.
  • -10,000: Again for unknown reasons, Hhkar migrate away from Skkyhrk.
  • -2235 to -2219: A family of Solomani traders, the Menderes, establish lucrative trade routes along the Mendan Main.
  • -321: Karik Menderes of Menderes Corporation raises all Menderes Vargr to the status of employees.
    • This starts a movement that makes slavery illegal on Asimikigir by -302.
  • -275: Tran Menderes breaks precedent by accepting a Vargr offer to carry Menderes goods off planet. Until now, Kudukara Lines, the principle transport line of the Second Empire of Gashikan, has carried all goods for the region.
  • -222: The Hhkar return to the region in a great migration, attacking the Vargr society present on Urinir.
    • Over the next 500 years, the Hhkar expand their sphere of occupied worlds.
  • (175 to 191): Julian War; the region unites to fight off the Third Imperium as it attempts to incorporate Amdukan, Mendan and Meshan sectors by force.
  • 377: Commodore David Lindquist of the Julian Protectorate Star Legion almost defeats a Hhkar force at Kargar. The Hhkar are so impressed by Lindquist's tenacity and cleverness that he is given an honorable execution, and the Hhkar withdraw from the system in spite of their victory.
  • Early 600s: After centuries of increasingly common peaceful (if wary) interaction, the Hhkar Sphere joins the Julian Protectorate.
  • 814: The Third Imperium and the Arzula authorities forge a trading agreement, leading to the creation of the Deep Space Stations of the Saeghvung-Turley-Exile Run, crossing the Lesser Rift in Empty Quarter Sector.
  • 822-835: Much of Arzul Sector to trailing is conquered by the Arzula.
    • 835-860s: The Blighted War drains the Arzula's nascent Hegemony as it tries to conquer five subsectors.
  • 864: The modern Hegemony of Lorean is founded, starting out as a 'trade and aid' group of interstellar traders centred on a cluster of high-population systems dominating Mycocona Subsector, in Arzul Sector to trailing.
    • The great success of this trade coalition leads to a sharp rise of economic and then military power.
  • 869-870: The repressive methods of the Hegemony, and the refusal of local resistance to buckle, leads to the Era of Horror in parts of coreward Empty Quarter Sector, as the Hegemony responds with undue cruelty against its enemies.
  • 933-936: The defection of the Damlaer Union from the Julian Protectorate to the Hegemony leads to the Lorean Strikes. Failed military action leads to a major political crisis within the Protectorate.
  • 940: As part of this political upheaval, the government of the Ikonaz Sphere collapses, replaced by the Rukadukaz Republic.
  • 942: The Protectorate and the Hegemony formally sign the Treaty of Var-Inaka (restricting naval basing) and the Julian Concord, incorporating the Hegemony into the Julian Protectorate.

Politics & Diplomacy (Interstellar Relations)[edit]

Between the many quarreling factions of the Vargr Extents, intrapolitical conflict has been the norm. It is the hope of many that the Julian Protectorate will help to unify the region and bring about a lasting peace, the fabled Pax Vargrisia.
