Ikonaz Vargr (language)
Ikonaz Vargr (language) is effectively the same as Ikonaz Vilani (language), but in the latter the official pronunciation is softened to make it easier on human throats.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
This is a dual-species language used on the powerful world of Ikon (Empty Quarter 1602).
Ikonaz Vargr (a form of Ovaghoun Vargr) and Ikonaz Vilani are mutually intelligible, even though Ikonaz Vargr is built for the Vargr throat, and Ikonaz Vilani is a version of Vilani that is easily understood by Vilani-culture Vargr.
These are the official languages of the Rukadukaz Republic, the interstellar nation that currently governs the Ikonaz Sphere.
An immediately obvious distinction between Ikonaz and spinward Vargr languages like Gvegh and Aekhu is the use of glottal stops represented visually by ('). Another distinction is the influence of Vilani on Ikonaz, meaning that the double vowel sounds of AA, II, and UU, absent from most Vargr languages, are included and indeed reasonably common.
Dialects[edit]
- Ourmakten is a common dialect of Ikonaz Vargr, commonly spoken on the world of Ikon. A large minority of Ikon–based shipping prefers to use this language: only Modern Vilani is more popular.
- Gvunkkone, Kr'ra'ogovtzarr, and Ukazk are major variations of Ikonaz Vargr, spoken on Ikon and elsewhere in the Rukadukaz Republic.
- Oksukhonmoere is a rare dialect of Ikonaz Vargr, only spoken on the world of Ikon.
Note: Many Ikonaz Vargr despise non-Ikonaz Vargr languages, and will pretend to not understand them even if they do.
Lexicon[edit]
• Aekhoutra'oug: A name of mystical and poetical significance among the Ikonaz Vargr, much like Yamato for the Japanese or Avalon for the English.
• Ghegk Roa Rronkghoegz: An approximate Ikonaz Vargr equivalent to the Anglic pun, "the Ikon of the Extents"
• Ghiinrangghong: Loosely, "Scorpion"; an arthropod with a poisonous sting
• Usivravgrashdi: An Ikonaz umbrella organization, dedicated to weakening the neighbouring power (and official but uneasy ally), the Hegemony of Lorean.
• Vgra'ougovkrroerradz: "The Light of Vargr Civilization"; Ikonaz label for Ikon
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Scholars of the Ikonaz Sphere are more likely to know Old High Vilani or Ancient English than a single word of Vuakedh (widespread among the Vargr of the Julian Protectorate) or Evrgoer (the most common Suedzuk Vargr tongue of the Lorean Hegemony.)
(Doing Things the Official Way is important to the Vilani -- and it can be argued that Ikonaz Vargr is a variant of Vilani, heavily reworked for Vargr use).
