Aekhu (language)

Aekhu (language) is primarily used by the Vargr race throughout the Vargr Extents supra-polity.

  • It is a peripheral or minority language.

The actual word Aekhu is derived from the Arrghoun language word Aek (“Black”) -- the most common colour of the pelts of its speakers.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

Aekhu is both a language and a cultural region in the Vargr Extents; it approximately follows the Imperial border, including Gvurrdon, Tuglikki, and Provence. Vargr were drawn here by the newer Imperial region around Deneb. Gvegh and Aekhu influences overlap in Gvurrdon Sector, while Aekhu and Ovaghoun cultures mix in Provence.

Alphabet[edit]

The Aekhu Language is conventionally written[1] with the vowels A, AA, AE, AU, E, I, IE, O, OE, OU, U AND UE.

It also has the consonants D, DH, DHN, DT, DZ, DZN, F, G, GG, GH, GHD, GHZ, GN, GR, GV, GZ, GZK, H, HRR, K, KF, KH, KHS, KHSK, KHSN, KK, KL, KN, KS, KSK, KV, KZ, L, LG, LK, LL, LT, N, NG, NGD, NGG, NGHK, NGK, NGN, NZ, R, RDH, RDS, RG, RGH, RGHG, RK, RNGZ, RR, RRG, RRGH, RRS, RS, RZ, RZN, S, T, TH, TS, V, W, Z, ZG and ZN.

Grammar[edit]

Compared to Gvegh, which is also a derivative of Arrghoun, Aekhu rejects agglutinative noun forms in favour of stand-alone descriptive particles which can be placed either before or after a noun. (Observe the difference in system names on common star charts between Gvurrdon Sector, which tends to Gvegh, and Tuglikki, which tends to Aekhu). These particles include:

  • Ae: In Arrghoun, this would be “How”; in Aekhu it has shifted to an emphatic, denoting importance.
  • Aek: “Black”
  • Ael
  • Aen
  • Aes
  • Fa: “In”; possessive article (denoted possession). This is lifted directly from Arrghoun.
  • Oekh
  • Oez: Burrowed from Logaksu languages
  • Okh
  • Oro
  • Uek
  • Uel

Lexicology[edit]

History & Background (Historical Linguistics)[edit]

Attitudes along this frontier are marked by sharp contrasts regarding religion, morality, patriotism, violence, and honor. Inconsistency from world to world is about the only thing that is consistent. This region also differs strongly with the inner Vargr regions around Lair in that change is constant and real, consistently breaking from set patterns, and more than any other region.

Family bonds tend to have greater importance than pack bonds within the Aekhu region. Siblings (sukagrra) often maintain life-long associations, especially when they're littermates (kagrra).
