Mendan style="width: 250px; height: 350px; border: solid 1px black; float: right; clear: left"

Mendan Sector has been a tense battleground since interstellar civilization became established in the area, although it was hoped that the founding of the Julian Protectorate would change this trend. The Julian experiment in long-term Human-Vargr partnership has been, most observers would allow, a general success, although politics here are always chaotic -- and the Yileans of Gashikan Sector have long had designs on the region.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

This rich cultural region has been experiencing turbulent racial relations between Humans and Vargr for several millennia. The many violent conflicts resulting from this racial animosity sometimes overshadow a fascinating multispecies interstellar culture that has grown despite the ongoing conflict. Core Julian Protectorate member states like the Asimikigir Confederation and the Rukadukaz Republic are, in various ways, committed to the species equality espoused by the Menderes Corporation. However, not all members are quite onboard with the ethos, and the collapse of the Second Empire of Gashikan resulted in an influx of new and hopeful members who didn't wish to join the Third Empire of Gashikan -- but are new to the Julian Human notion that Vargr are partners rather than the source of all evil. Politics remain lively.

Linguistic Topography: 1116[edit]

The following languages are among the most commonly encountered in this astrographic region:

Languages of Humaniti:
Languages of Vargr:
  • Irilitok: The language family of the most populous Vargr phenotype and ethnic culture within the Julian Protectorate.
  • Ovaghoun: The language family of a populous Vargr phenotype and ethnic culture.
Languages of Major & Pervasive non-Human Races:
  • Hhraki: Also known as Hhkarn; the primary language of the Hhkar. Hhkar travel frequently and may be found wandering much of Julian and adjacent space.
  • Oynprith: The ritualistic, ceremonial language of Droyne communities throughout Charted Space.
  • Wawa-pakekeke-wawa: The common, precise and bureaucratic language of the Bwaps. Spoken on Bwap-dominated planets and by government functionaries on any world lucky enough to retain a dedicated Bwap workforce.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The Vargr claimed this region many millennia ago. Their chaotic political culture has made it among the least stable regions in an interstellar culture already known for instability. Much like Reaver's Deep Sector on the far side of Charted Space, the area is still known as a hot bed of corsairs and piracy. The place of the Droyne in the region's history is largely unknown.

Mendan was a coreward holding of the Ziru Sirka at its height. Humans became particularly invested in the region when it was part of what the First Imperium called the Mikasirka Sphere.

The Asimikigir Confederation, with its culture of complete Vargr-Human equality (to the point of promoting the "panet" relationship that bonds the two races together as family) is the most powerful Julian state. Within Mendan, it's followed in influence by the Commonwealth of Mendan -- which was originally part of the Second Empire of Gashikan. The Commonwealth of Mendan has embraced the general Julian ethos, but is the conservative voice in the Protectorate Council, urging restraint in relations with other states, and generally arguing against expansion of the Protectorate.

Native Sophonts (NILs): 1105[edit]

The following races (sophont species) are believed to have originated within this area:

  • Terragens (Non-human Terran races)
    • None

Demographics: 1105[edit]

Significant populations of the following races (sophont species) reside within this sector:

  • Humaniti (Human races)
    • Solomani
    • Vilani
    • Yilean: Many local Humans carry some Yilean genes, though full-bloodied Yileans are rare. Given the notorious anti-Vargr politics of the Yilean state, overtly Yilean ethnic traits are often distrusted.

Historical Eras[edit]

Mendan Sector was part of the First Imperium, and the expanding Third Imperium intended to reclaim the region, along with all First Imperial holdings.

During this time (circa 160), the Imperium bore little tolerance or respect for the Vargr. Its treatment of Vargr-controlled Corridor Sector typified the attitude. Armed with this, the Menderes Corporation began a propaganda campaign across the coreward sectors, giving both Vargr and Humans common cause against the Imperium. In 166, the Imperium sent the Imperial Interstellar Scout Service and the Diplomatic Corps to Mendan as ambassadors of goodwill. However, they generally received only a cool reception as a result of Menderes influence. Frustrated, Martin I sent Imperial fleets to drive into Mendan Sector, beginning the Julian War in 175. The people of the region displayed surprising resistance and, most unexpectedly, unity. Before the war, the region was divided into dozens of independent confederations. During it, however, they quickly rallied to the Asimikigir Confederation, the Menderes Corporation, and Julian Menderes in particular after he attained leadership in 178. Vargr and Humans both deeply respected Julian, and many served him with fanatical loyalty.

Combining Vargr resourcefulness and Human determination, forces of the new Julian Protectorate, collectively called the Star Legion, repulsed the Imperial fleets from the region by 185. They continued to press into the Imperium to force a formal peace agreement, and got it in 191.
